WaniKani massively helped me get back into Japanese after putting it off for nearly a decade (first tried at age 10-11). I am currently level 47 and would like to note a couple of things. 1. You don't have to abide by the lesson limits. If you take all lessons and get every review correct you are doing an entire level which usually have >30 Kanji and >110 words in four days. That's more than 30 cards a day which is a much better pace for someone studying a lot. 2. The price seems unreasonable in contrast to all the free options being available, but at the same time it's very low when you consider it helps you get a potentially career-making skill quickly. Lifetime is also $199 during Christmas which is when most people buy it. As far as I understand they will even refund a few monthly charges if you decide to switch to lifetime on Christmas. I also recommend everyone who does WaniKani to use mobile apps instead of the website. For iOS my favorite is Tsurukame and I'm sure there are options for android as well. The hourly push notifications help you do reviews hourly and (as in my case) can get you addicted to learning Kanji, which is quite convient! I recommend trying it out if you're interested and as I said the monthly refunds happen and the christmas sale is soon. It obviously has little to offer to Anki die-hards but the ease of set up makes it worth it to get you started. I also don't know if you can have Anki do automatic answer checking. I personally really dislike the "grade yourself" approach so that's another thing to consider.

I've been using Memrise for years to create flashcards for my students. I teach grammar in my classes and encourage the use of the courses I've created for the community as extra material to improve their vocabulary. I love my courses and I always use them. I've already had to adapt to the horrible update of the app that made me use the web version on my cell phone, and now I'll lose everything at some point "throughout 2025". It's ridiculous! Do they think they're Duolingo? In Brazil, almost no one knows Memrise and its "official courses", we in the community keep it alive, they used it a lot for school subjects or to build their own language cards. What now? Who will pay to access AI-powered content? With Tiktok? They should take that money and invest it in marketing, improving the ranking of community courses, such as how Meta verified, promoting content creators, expanding the forum, engaging gamified activities... I am certainly mourning the community courses

I want to take the n3 in June but I haven't been able to start even 😭

I'm not talking about taking the actual test (for certain not at the prices they are at now) but talking about passing a practice test of N2 to confirm that I'm at N2 level :p

I am a Wanikani user, I have been using the site everyday for about 6 months and reached level 17 (over a total of 60 I believe ) . for context, I was just about able to pass N5 level when I started . Regarding the grammar there is something I'd like to add . As you said, there is no explanation of grammar points BUT every new word taught comes with sentence/context examples . If you actually read every sentences, new points of grammar are slowly introduced . At first I wasn't reading the sentence as I just wanted to learn the kanji meanings . The frustrating daily limitation is what got me into reading the sentences as I wanted to squeeze more out of the website . As you say at $80/year having a way to access the grammar points would be appreciated, but I might never have come across you channel if they did! Keep up the great work! The JLPT is good at one thing: introducing Japanese language learners to Japan’s style of slow and outdated bureaucracy. Also, why is the content of each test a secret? Why be secretive about which kanji or vocab each level covers? That always felt shady to me.

3:18 This is one of my biggest issues with WK and other spaced repetition apps. They all seem tailored to absolute beginners and don’t allow me to study at my own pace. Even if someone has only attained an N5 level of Japanese, they probably don’t want to waste days (if not weeks) of time “learning” elementary concepts like colors or numbers.

We are working on a big series (me and my wife) which will hopefully become even more popular then the quick grammar videos. It'll still take some time before that whole series launches though but an update on that project is coming soon!

A major flaw of the JLPT in my opinion is that it doesn't test your speaking ability. So, you could be certified at an N1 level for grammar/kanji/vocabulary/listening, but not even able to hold a basic conversation in Japanese! Especially if you're studying Japanese abroad (and self taught), this is an easy trap to fall into if you only focus on passing the JLPT exams.

May I ask about your Level? Do you remember the content of all of your grammar videos? How many kanjis/words do you know? I started at the beginning of corona and know abourt ~3000 words ~800 kanjis( but not all readings). For me word lists as a video helps to listen to while sport, driving, etc. Your grammar shorts videos are also very helpful to watch while doing something else. When I "learn", I never force myself to memorize, just listen to, like a cassette in the car, and at some point you know every song and which song comes next. It also doesn't feel like work/school/learning. Just do anki instead of smartphone game. So I have no big problems with motivation.

I just filed your sheet of inscription with this : After trying many books and apps, I still think we have a world problem in creating a good and natural way to teach languages, especially Japanese. I am French, and I just quit my job as a French literature teacher in middle and high school, a bit like you, but I tried to stop before the burn-out. Anyway, even in France to teach young French people, teachers and programs are BAD! I like grammar, when it is simple and logical (because it is) but I hate when it is taught stupidly like a machine, where we have to learn things by heart. So, I hope you found a way to teach in a good way, if you think you can do it, I will be glad to learn with you ;)

Yeah I agree with all the points you made. It's pretty much just a check in the box for applying to companies to show you understand a certain level of Japanese and it will be tested in the interview anyways. The main thing I hate though is how it takes like 3 months to get the results back and they only offer it once a year in the US and also its $100! But i still reccomend all my foreign bros to just get N2 anyways since it just helps when looking for work. If you don't plan to get N2 then I would suggest getting some certs that japanese companies like 基本情報技術者試験 or Java SE Bronze, but those exams are like N1 level.

Thanks for the review! Sadly both Human Japanese and Human Japanese Intermediate cost 18.99 on the microsoft store. It feels expensive for an app but if you think of it more like a book then it's a reasonable price. I might give a try in the future after making sure I want to keep learning japanese and also after I try some of the free material on the internet.

Can anyone comment on whether this list is reflective of the real level of difficulty of the N2 exam? I find a lot of the grammar here to be quite simple, but I am half Japanese, so maybe that's why. I plan to sit the N2 exam this December.

Hi mate! I understand your point of view and I agree with you. All of those tests are in a monopoly of few institutions which dictate if you are or not a speaker. This is stupid, as any tests for any competences there is. When you know something, especially a language, you know it, and it is easy for anybody to determinate our own level. It is a shame those tests are in the need for certain jobs. But, as you said, nobody really check if you have the level or not, if you are able to communicate. When do you plan another live? I liked speaking with you the other day. Maybe you have a discord? If you don't, I will be glad to invite you on mine (a bit empty one, but its purpose is knowledge sharing)

I keep getting adds on LingoDeer to buy premium but I didn't do it and I managed to complete the full Thai course. Does anyone know if this was a glitch or is it actually free? I want to start learning Japanese but I'm worried I'll have to pay in the middle of it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for your honest review! I also don't feel like MochiKanji is a scam (it seems like that person was mad that MochiKanji wasn't just like Wanikani or the like). I'm still on the fence about the app, but seeing different reviews help.

It’s complicated, Memrise have said they are trying to implement tools to help with two issues language learners have, keeping up with the speed of native speakers, and confidence in speaking, if you think about it the company gets the blame when people don’t get the result they want. The problem is, I would question the effectiveness of their new system, and it should never have come at the cost of community courses, which cover an astonishing amount of content and are a great help.

Damn I almost bought Memrise Lifetime today. Can anyone recommend an app that offers a bunch of languages like Thai, Japanese, Mandarin, German, Russian? Duolingo is a little to beginner for me. I would also like to pay lifetime upfront and not pay yearly.

I'll be making more reviews in the near future but I will try to keep them a bit shorter and try to aim to be under 15 minutes. I still do recommend this app, but as always test before you pay to see if you like it and be certain to use multiple tools and resources to study Japanese as there is still not a single application which can get you from 0 to ultra fluent.

Can I rely on this video for all the jlpt n4 patterns?
