My first rodeo with train pictures and video. Of course I had to get in the way of the video! Hey, I was just a high school kid at the time! Did most of my prior train watching on a Schwinn bike and a pencil & notepad! As Archie & Edith said: Those Were the Days!

Great action on the GTW and MoPac at Thornton Junction in South Holland, IL April 1980. This was 2 blocks away from Thornwood HS. my Alma Mater! Southbound MoPac plus GT westbound with leased C&NW GP30's. They broke off the train earlier with a cut they delivered to the IC at Harvey. Then 392 ripped by on the "Good Track Road". Great stuff! Did you keep taking videos into the late 1980's?
Is that train in the background going into Markham Yard?
Yes! The yard was known as Woodcrest as well as Markham. I think it separated the cities of Markham and Harvey. I-80 ran over the yard.
I miss the old sights of Homewood's Woodcrest Yard
Good video I love seeing the trains without any graffiti.
I had forgotten about the horn placement on the 9500's (above the radiator fans). The first time I saw one (in DeLand, IL on the Havana Sub) I asked the crew about them ... they said it was to keep them warm in cold weather so they wouldn't ingest snow and ice. I'm guessing that wasn't really necessary or roads found other ways to prevent it?
Looked like at least 3 or 4 CGW covered hoppers with CNW graffiti on them in that one train
Hi from the UK. Love watching all this old footage. Thank goodness you caught all these vintage Trains and thankyou for posting.
This is awesome!!! I ride the Metra Electric from the Homewood station to downtown everyday and it’s great to see how it was back in the early 70s. My father was a conductor on the IC commuter in the mid - late 70’s.
This was just before the Highliners (bi-levels) were delivered. There was a crash in 1972 involving a Highliner and one of these vintage commuter cars that took the lives of 45 people. I was in 3rd grade at the time.
1:52 Zephyr
It is humbling to see full trains without any graffiti what so ever!!!
Thank you for digitizing this 8mm film and for uploading the video to RUclips for us to enjoy. I did not become familiar with the Illinois Central in Homewood, Illinois until after we moved to the south suburbs in late July 1977. (Posted on 9 February 2025 at 2331 CST.)
the video is so amazing i didn't miss the sound
Burnt orange and cream never get old
But it faded quickly.
Holy cow! You never see videos of the old turbos! Thanks for sharing this!!!
🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃👍
Another great video. Thank you!
Was the train heading west toward the State Line crossing by any chance? Nice catch of the South Shore train going through those "S" Curves! (Posted on 9 Debrary 2025 at 14 19 CST.)
Yes it is a westbound. I think I'm standing next to Sheffield Ave. in Hammond.
Awesome 👏 footage 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Just wondering, did RUclips automatically upscale this to 4k or did you?
Thanks for posting these. I model this era. Lots of great rolling stock ideas here.
Same here. That was why we panned so much rolling stock back then.
Wow. This is amazing! This is such a high quality camera for the time!
These came from a JVC VHS camera and recorder. What I've found and will be posting in later videos is that BETA converts very well to digital.
This might be one of the few pieces of decent footage of the RTG Amtrak Turboliners! Love those characteristic P5As.
Excellent, excellent subject matter - Lots of now-classic road power, fallen flags rolling stock and tons of action. Thank you for posting. (However, I think you oversold this video by saying "masterpiece" in the title, with the shaky camera work, unwarranted use of the Zoom button, and harsh cuts. I would have just called it "Gold")
Well we were just rookies at that time!
Thank you for documenting these trains in Hammond, Indiana in May 1980 and for digitizing the video to upload to RUclips! I enjoyed watching this video! Posted on 9 February 2025 at 0959 CST.)
Fantastic to watch all these old Locos and Freight-stock, with their vintage Liveries thank you.
Great video, glad I'm not riding in that UP caboose at 5:12, makes me seasick! Nice pallette of rail colors. Keep your videos coming. Thank you.
Thank you for another wonderful video from the Calumet Park crossing in Calumet City, Illinois! I enjoy watching these videos from the early part of 1980! (Posted on 8 February 2025 at 2159 CST).0
Your channel is pure gold with the vintage rail vids. I love seeing old box cars, cabooses and piggybacks rolling. This is my favorite rail channel. Thanks for the uploads 🫡.
Thanks! Much Much More to Come!
Amazing videos, I couldn’t believe how much rocking , bouncing on that track, Amtrak 615 was awesome too see along with the new Chessie cabooses, awesome Conrail lash ups, loved it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The UP cabooses were the best bouncers for sure! In all my years I've never seen a car derail at that location. Once in a while a bolt would shake loose from the diamond though!
I just noticed that around 0:54, the Amtrak F40PH in the lead of the second passenger train was #272. That engine and sister 366 were involved in the Back Bay Train wreck on December 12, 1990. They were pulling the Night Owl when they crashed into an MBTA passenger train. No lives lost.

1:16 Lake Shore!
I love this video!
Cool 😎 vid 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃👍
Great catches!! Still my stomping grounds for railfanning.
Was the Amtrak running on the old Pennsylvania tracks?
Loving this vintage footage from NWI! Cool to see what was rolling around back then. Out of curiosity, any footage from Griffith in your archives?
Have some Griffith 70's footage on reels. Much harder to process than tape. Eventually I'll get them out!
🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃👍
At 2:43, this may have been TV-LA (or what eventually became that train).
Man those Turboliner P5A's were amazing! Great throwback!
Those horns were very distinctive!
Great video! @ellebystrainvideos2023 indicated that this video was taken at Hegewisch and Burnham. What year did you capture these trains? It was nice to see the Chicago & North Western Railroad "Pride" bulkhead gondola at 2:30 in the video. (Posted on 7 Fevruary 2025 at 2255 CST.).
I railfanned alot of Pine Junction in the 1990's!!!!
Wow!!! Hegewisch, and Burnham!!!!
You're correct on both counts! The diamond here is Burnham Crossing, but we filmed it from the Hegewisch side! South Shore station was a block to the west.
Rhis is unbelievable and so cool. MAN FOR THESE DAYS AGAIN!!!
Do keep the 80's action in Hammond coming!!! Love this💯
A real Masterpiece is coming in a day or 2!
Is this former NYC or PRR?
Kind of both! This spot is x-PRR. Half a mile east the mainline swings on to the x-NYC.
So AWESOME!!! To this day I still Railfan and enjoy Hammond-Whiting, Indiana. All time favorite place. Wish Conrail was still here.
Thanks
You caught these trains in Hammond, Indiana just east of the Illinois Indiana State Line. I am guessing that the big plant on the other side of the tracks is the Lever Brothers plant in Hammond, Indiana. (Posted on 7 February 2025 at 2038 CST.)
Yes it is! Right next to Phil Smidt's restaurant. Did you live in Calumet City?
@@silverfoxtrainvideos7521 No, I have not lived in Calumet City, Illinois. I do go to Holy Cross Cemetery on a regular basis to visit my wife's grave. I currently live in South Holland, Illinois. I grew up on the northwest side of Chicago around North Harlem Avenue and Addison Street. After I married, we found a house in Hazel Crest, Illinois in the mid-1970s. I recognized the Lever Brothers plant because over the years I have driven past it and I have seen it in other railfan videos taken in Hammond, Indiana. (Posted on 9 February 2025 at 0010 CST.)
Joliet is my hometown and current residence. Not only is it great seeing this, but comparing the buildings that are or are not there anymore in downtown Joliet. My dad was an ATSF fan and it rubbed off on me.
Good to see, thank you.
