God's Teeth Main Riff - Horizontal #shorts #metal
Here's a quick little video showing how to play the main riff to my new song, GOD'S TEETH. It nicely demonstrates some of the ideas I've discussed previously, involving polymeter, syncopation, and motifs!
(I've uploaded two different versions, since the vertical one is pretty difficult to read if you're on PC)

LUCAS ANGELO - GOD'S TEETH (Delta Green Song | Progressive Metal/Djent)
Просмотров 3644 месяца назад
NOW AVAILABLE ON SPOTIFY: open.spotify.com/album/13OWwemUAj1xZTDCVpKRst?si=netpx_2JTj-SY7CzaxyoPg This is, by far, the heaviest song I've ever written. Inspired by the "God's Teeth" campaign for the Delta Green RPG, the lyrics are from the point of view of a man who has no choice but to resort to unimaginable violence as a response to inhuman cruelty... and the hungry god which urges him on.

HOW TO WRITE DJENT RIFFS - Part 2: MOTIFS

SOUNDCLOUD - soundcloud.com/lucasangelomusic In this video, I explore the way that bands like Meshuggah (and Metallica!) use the concept of motifs in order to create cohesive feeling riffs and songs. A motif is the smallest identifiable and repeated piece of a musical idea. Learning to identify motifs and understanding how to create variations will help immensely with writing songs that feel li...

The "Djent" sound arguably traces back to thrash metal bands like Metallica, though it has mutated and changed over time. The complexity of the style is mostly associ...

Except for a bit at the beginning, and another part near the end, I recorded my entire writing process. The audience was just me for most of it, but I can keep myself company usually! This is super man! Very concise and detailed
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
i never knew metal internet yamero is something i needed in life
I smell fresh meat.
WHOOPS! The sequence is actually supposed to be: 9 9 2 0 2 2 9 9 8 *9* 2 1 2 3 3 3 Now if you have a skill in Mathematics over 20%, make a LUCK roll.
Can you take their half whole diminishef scale ,say in C and then show how to come up with a simple kickass meshuggah riff..verse 1,riff 1n2,chorus n bridge
I can certainly try! I wasn't sure what to do next as a tutorial, but this is a great suggestion, thank you! 🙏
As a little bit of an update, I'm working on something like this as a case study. My plan is to try writing something like that as a practice run first, then I'll create a new video where I go through the process step-by-step (ie. Not just analyzing something I wrote ahead of time, but walking through writing it as I go)
Lucas...appreciate the efforts and for me its meshuggah for life. Been trying my head around to play meshuggah on bass. My tunings are G F C A# D# and i tune to 432 or 435 hz. The software explaination...kills it..makes it a bit off
That's a little bit outside of my area of experience! I'm no bassist. The one thing I do know is that the bass in Meshuggah songs is typically actually in unison with the guitars when they're going particularly low. As far as tunings and such, I know the tune to F Standard (or a half-step down) on their 8 strings, but as far as the details on the bass go, I don't really know!
I was wondering when you'd get around to playing fear and hunger! Glad to see it inspired you to write something badass
I'm glad you think it's badass! Since I'm a fan of survival horror, dark fantasy, and RPGs, it's right up my alley. I'll be uploading the song onto RUclips soon as well, I just need to finalize a few things. I usually post to SoundCloud first, since I'm able to make changes to a track after I've posted it on there.
Agent Tavish approves this message.
Make an Alertness roll... it's listening based though, so remember to take off 5% because of your hearing loss after setting that Shoggoth on fire at the storage containers
Still pretty poppy! Gj.
🙏BLESS🙏
🙏
Awesome, thank you. This is very helpful.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
idk man i just tooted that recorder all throughout first grade and i was fine 🤷♂️
Polymetric recorder djent
Note: At 7:08 or so I talk about sliding up to the A. My brain was in 7 string mode, not 8 string mode! 12 fret on the third string of my standard tuning 8 string is an E, not an A.
Pretty complex
Interesting
This is a pretty surface level treatment of the topic, but my idea was that I've gone and searched the literal phrase "How to write Djent Riffs" and I've found videos that basically show "Here's a riff. Mess around with it I guess" while giving only the most basic explanation of the thought process. Part of my goal here is to breakdown a "case study" with Do Not Look Down, as well as to show other people trying to write their own music an actual example of how I write while I'm in the process of writing it, including details on my thought process (a little bit like what I do in my writing streams) Schoenberg's "Fundamentals of Musical Composition" is a great resource for the theory concepts I talk about here, but that book still falls into the trap of essentially doing case studies rather than having the equivalent of a worked example. The more I talk about this, the more I consider writing an e-book or something 😅
@@LucasAngeloMusic E-book sounds like a good idea!
❤ Better than the original!
❤ luv it!
Cool behind the scenes look!
❤ Love your sound!
Love the imagery and sound!
❤ Love your music!
Dig that solo, dude!
Thanks!
I agree. The guitar solo was great!
Hehe, yup!
I started up Porcupine Tree's "Heartattack In a Layby" while I was walking home with a 5lb bag of potatoes in my backpack, but then my phone died. 😢
Just got a MacBook M1. I am excited to go on this journey. I hope you continue this as a series. Great video.
It's been a while since I used a Mac for anything, but I'm pretty sure you'd have access to everything I'm using. I think Guitar Pro 8 is on Mac, and I'm using Ableton Live 11 behind the scenes for my voice-over and guitar noodling. I'm glad you enjoyed! I completely intend to continue this! My goal currently is one new song, one stream, and one tutorial each week. This coming week, I'll be exploring how bands like Meshuggah use the concept of motifs to write songs.
Lucas, thank you. This was a great lesson. It's nice to see someone else using guitar pro to write out song ideas. If you have time to take this further, that would be great.
Absolutely! My plan is to go deeper into the idea of motifs and different methods of motivic development next. I'm aiming to post one of these a week, aside from my writing livestreams and original music. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
@@LucasAngeloMusic That sounds good. I'm in.
Copyright trolling! Some people actually just get away with it, which is insane. One of those things that people are just stunned that the services haven't sorted out yet
That's nuts
Right? I have to assume it was unintentional, but with the way that copyright claims work, I have to say to the claimant "Hey, this isn't yours, plz give it back? 😢" and if they just choose not to respond, it belongs to them.
Wow, I didn't think that such good music would be without listening. It's time to fix it!
your voice is just amazing 🧡 i love how talented you are 🧡
this makes me feel like youre about to introduce a new bbeg that we cant actually defeat because theyre an elder god -.-‘ i love it 🧡
The idea I had for this was something a bit more like the MacGuffin for a Cyberpunk campaign. Different corporations and factions are fighting over the discovery of ancient ruins from a lost civilization that somehow has advanced technology that could set them ahead by centuries, hence the idea of it sounding somehow both ancient and futuristic
ah. so youve been making the background music for our next game XD@@LucasAngeloMusic
most definitely continue. will love to see where you take this 🧡
The idea here was more like a game-over screen. Like "YOU DIED... CONTINUE? >YES NO" The feel I was getting when I was writing it was a kind of optimistic struggle. Sort of like "Well, I've failed, but I'm just going to keep trying"
thats fair as well XD@@LucasAngeloMusic
i will never get over your talent 🧡 XD ill also never get over when your voice drops into the growl like that
I've been working a lot on expanding my range for my harsh vocals! I used to just be able to do the really low stuff, the "death growl" using a technique called false-chord screaming. I've been working on the higher "screamo" type harsh vocals, though, which is a completely different technique called vocal fry screaming. The cool thing with the fry scream is that I can often actually hit notes while screaming, or at least have some more melodic overtones to it. To get an idea, the low growl comes from the same "place" as a fake cough or an "ahem", while the high stuff comes from the same place as the rasp in an "Oh my GoDDDDD" with a kind of valley-girl mannerism or the clicking noise that Sadako from The Grudge movies makes.
🧡 its amazing, you deserve all the praise 🧡
Thank you so much!!
I honestly didn't like Mori's rendition, I don't like a lot of covers for this song, but this version makes it so I like it so much more. It's so much better here
Thanks! That really means a lot to me. There are still things I wish I could adjust (God damn the synth at the end is too low in the mix) but one thing I was pleasantly surprised by was how unique my version ended up sounding when compared to the original or Mori's cover. My guitar parts and everything came directly from trying to transcribe the original music, with a couple of flourishes, but it ended up sounding almost like a completely different song. I guess that just shows how much of an impact production has... now I guess I should try taking a metal song and transforming it in the opposite direction.
@@LucasAngeloMusic wow, you went overkill with that
The original switch’s genres so switching between metal sub genres would be cool
Yeah, that would have been a good idea. This ultimately came out of what I was doing when I was just sort of noodling along with the original track. If I had known 10,000 people would end up listening to this, I would have put some more thought in 😅
some thing is missing but it is so beautiful
Yeah, if I could go back and adjust things, I'd definitely add more layers of synths and more lead guitar parts. I agree that it does feel like something is missing in parts!
I want to like this but your album cover is made from mass art laundering
You're entitled to your opinion, but I'm broke and can't draw. If I had the money, I would love to commission an artist.
@@LucasAngeloMusic If you had just stolen somebody's picture then you could at least credit them. But you stole a little bit from 10,000 artists, so even that's impossible now. I hope you stay broke til all 10,000 of them get what they're owed. Hopefully that isn't long at all
I'll make sure to give all them an even share of the $0 I've made from their work.
System of a Down styled. I love it lol
System of a Down is definitely not what I was thinking of here, but I'm glad you enjoyed it!
you neeed to make the music video, no really!
I was thinking about at least doing the part that everyone is making meme variations of, "Internet is fucking awesome!" into the last chorus. I'd have Calliope doing the "SickTok" dance like in the original, surrounded by a headbanging metal band ala Dethklok. Either that, or I'll make a VTuber version of myself. I'm not doing the whole "faceless artist" thing since I show my face in my other uploads, but I do kinda like the idea of having a cartoon mascot to use if I don't feel like making my room decently presentable. The only problem is that I have no artistic ability and no money to commission an artist (hence why the art here was AI generated)
the blast beats are more than enough to make a deathcore fan cry :') also is this ever coming to spotify? would love this in my main playlist 👁
If I can figure out how to get in touch with Mori Calliope and Aiobahn to get their permission, then for sure! Otherwise I'm a little unsure on the copyright situation. I could try to upload it and see if I get any trouble (i.e ask for forgiveness rather than permission). This video hasn't been copyright flagged, so it doesn't look like either of them have this registered with any content-ID algorithms.
That intro lick gave me flashbacks to a song I haven't heard in forever. Was it based off of Where The Wild Wind Blows by Iron Maiden or am I imagining things?
If there is some inspiration from Iron Maiden, that would have been on the part of Aiobahn, the original producer. I just transcribed the synth melody to guitar with a few flourishes. I was personally trying to channel Children of Bodom, but the melody itself does have a vague resemblance to the lead line from Aces High depending on how hard you squint.
WHY THIS MASTERPIECE DIDN'T HAVE MUCH VIEW!!!!!!???? THIS WILL BE A GOAT!!!
This has somewhere around 300 times the number of views as my other uploads, so I'm certainly not complaining! I'm just glad people enjoy it. 🙏 BLESS 🙏
this is, SICK!.
Thanks! 🎶
english meh
Valid. In my Ableton project for this, I actually have the Japanese vocals aligned as well, but I personally preferred the English version since it made the end product sound more like the English language rock and metal that inspired my version. Maybe I'll get around to polishing up some of the things I wasn't happy with and release a new version with the original vocals.
that'd be so fucking cool dude@@LucasAngeloMusic
which lack in this version, that's hard bass like 1:21 - 1:50 or 2:12 - 2:22, if convert to metal, it should be use blast beat or gravity blast beat to make it go harder as hard bass, and need some death metal vocal for more intension, and the important part that it missing electronic effect, synth sound, many sound effect miss make it like a totally different song
I agree, actually, specifically regarding the synth sounds. The ending sounds chaotic, but its missing the lead line. If I could go back and redo this, I'd definitely have lead guitars doubled with a synth playing the main theme at the end. I've been pretty candid that this was something I put together in a night, so there are a lot of things I look back at and wish I did differently. Getting constructive feedback like this means just as much to me as all the comments saying how they love what I did, since it means I know what to work on next time!
Regarding having some Death Metal vocals, that's something I've considered too. Currently I have a plan to redo this, doing one version with my own vocals doing the English lyrics, and another version with the original Japanese. For the version with my own vocals, I'd definitely do the "Haters are irrelevant, Gachikoi are whatever" verse with harsh vocals
@@LucasAngeloMusic In my opinion, use the orginial KOTOKO Japan vocal for keep the main theme, you know, missed her voice is something make this song feel weird xD, and especially, if you're male, you should use Death metal vocal entire song, clean voice or high tone Power Metal voice will make it sound cringe, I think About the chaotic ending you can refer to Infant Annihilator, at recent, you did gravity blast beat, it's ok but sound out of rhythm, not match, even it chaotic but still go in line, riff guitar need to do something, or lead guitar do some swipe solo. Or you can refer to Raining Blood ending of Slayer, too Because original song main genre is electronic music, so you can't miss electronic sound, synth sound, and it's true. Remember make sure it volume also loud, it's main and also background
i accidentally stumbled upon this in my recommended. im a nso fan entering a rock/metal phase so this is fucking amazing!!!!!!! very good cover 🙏 BLESS🙏
Thank you so much! The primary inspiration for the metal aspects here were Children Of Bodom (Needled 24/7) and Strapping Young Lad (Detox). Detox was one song that seemed like it thematically was hitting on some of the same themes as Internet Yamero. "I was warned / Absolutely Numb / No good around people / Everyone knows and watches me" I have this idea kicking around at the back of my mind of somehow tying together something from the NSO soundtrack with the song "Angels Don't Kill" by Children of Bodom, because there's a one hell of a thematic overlap there. I have a similar re-orchestration of "Internet Angel" on my Soundcloud, and I've been working on putting together a version of "Desire For Approval", so that may eventually see the light of day. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🙏 BLESS🙏
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Finally A metal ver of this song!!! :> I love it sm!!! you did an amazing job at it! ^^
Thanks! I really appreciate it! 🙏 BLESS🙏
