Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board - How hard can it be?
Просмотров 314Год назад
Thinking of trying a stand up paddle board? Watch someone who's learning and you quickly realise that balancing takes some practice, but watch someone more experienced and it looks so easy, fun, even relaxing. If you're thinking of trying it, I'm hoping I can persuade you to get in the outside and give it a go!
Wing and Mountainboard: Good Wind/Bad Sand
Просмотров 2 тыс.3 года назад
Using a wing with a mountainboard or landboard on a sandy beach needs a decent wind. But that's not all, there are other variables to consider. The sand obviously needs to be firm enough to ride. Patches of sand can vary, anything too soft and you're going nowhere. Does the wind direction always allow you to make the best use of the best sand? The short answer is of course, no. The forces of na...
First attempts at Step Back Turns on the iROCKER Sport SUP

To gain confidence on my iRocker Sport inflatable stand up paddle board (SUP) I challenged myself to move about more on the board. Step back turns, literally stepping back on the board to shift your weight, make turning so much easier, but they do take a bit of practice. These were my first attempts. I've had a few goes and it's a lot of fun, but the foil is a whole new skill which takes time - it's not the physical effort (which is a fun challenge) it's having enough time to put towards it, including driving to a suitable flat water location. I found I need more regular practice on flatter water, so time and location are my biggest hurdles and hold me back currently. Best thing I'd say is take lessons and see how you find it. If you have easy access to flatter water it will definitely help.

      Thank you. I brush off sand and rinse with water after use, then spray around the bearings with PTFE spray. I would add don't spend too much on the board in the first place (unless you can!), it is a harsh environment for wood and wheels. I bought an older model at reduced price so less to worry about if it breaks. Some paint on my deck is starting to wear from sandy shoes rubbing on it, but it's held up well overall.

    • @intheoutside123
      @intheoutside123 Год назад

      Hi, a wing would work with any SUP I think. It's fun but you are quite limited with what you can do, mostly just going downwind - which in retrospect I think the video demonstrates quite well. I'd suggest thinking about what you want to use the SUP for most of the time (without the wing) and buy the SUP most suitable for that. For example if new to SUP an allround would be ideal. Perhaps have a look at the Slingshot SUP winder attachment, or even the 11ft Slingshot crosswinder as the extra fin attachment will help. Of course there's also the option of buying a big floaty foil board if you're thinking about heading down the foil route! Hope that helps, difficult to give specific advice really 🙂

By just holding on to the front? Looks great fun. I live in Pembrokeshire we have some really long beaches, so my plan is a mountain board and wing. Then hit the beach low tide and wind is on shore which is quite often here. So beam reach down then beam reach back. Any advice welcome! Cheers

      Hi, the journey is slow (more free time needed in good learning conditions) but definitely fun and rewarding. I have a large 120 litre foil board and can taxi around reasonably well, I'm just learning to get on foil - which is a whole new experience. I have a lot of footage of me falling in! Wind surfers seem to pick it up pretty quickly, I don't have any previous experience so it's taking me a little longer. Would definitely recommend if you're up for a challenge...

    The friction on sand robs momentum compared to the ease of land sailing on concrete or asphalt. I've land sailed with windsurfing rig & mountain boards or longboard skateboards since 1995. Wing sail can eliminate the somewhat dangerous need to switch front & back feet which is required with a windsurfing rig mast. I've sailed parking lots as small as 50 ft by 150 ft. Parking lots large enough for sailing are usually lighted at night & there are probably quite a few workable ones much closer to where you live than a useable beach. I do wear a serious helmet plus elbow pads & knee pads, just in case. Thank you for the video!

      Thanks. On a good day it's plenty fast enough for me, but it's true, conditions are everything. Those land windsurf rigs look fun, though I do enjoy the simplicity of the wing

      @@intheoutside123 Yes, wing sails are better for land sailing than windsurfing rigs in good winds, because of the safety issue. Also I see large diameter mountain board wheels are now influencing larger diameter longboard skateboard wheels for paddling & land sailing. One of my land boards has 6.5" diameter wheels. Also found the axle diameter of scooter wheels matches longboard axles so I switched 70 mm diameter & way too wide longboard wheels to 125 mm scooter wheels that are only 1" wide (less rolling resistance & they also avoid more tiny pebbles that could stop the board during slow turns).
