      Hello, thank you for your question. Please enter the total eligible tuition fees for the relevant tax year. The TD1 is only an estimate. Your actual tax payable or refund (if any) will depend on your total income/ deductions/ credits/ etc. These will be calculated when you file your tax return. How to use wealthsimple portal if filing for spouse returns for the first time as there will not be any Netfile access code o r any other detail with CRA ?

    • @ZoeySiu
      @ZoeySiu 10 дней назад

      Hello, thank you for your question. Great question! First-time filers can file tax return electronically, except when the CRA doesn't have the complete information on file. When filing a tax return electronically, the CRA validates the information such as Social Insurance Number, date of birth, etc. The system rejects a return if personal information doesn’t match what they have on record. The NETFILE Access Code is optional. It is intended to be used as an extra level of security. Here’s the information per the CRA website: “While this Access code is not mandatory, if you do not enter your Access code, you will not be able to use any information from your tax return when confirming your identity with the Canada Revenue Agency. You will have to rely on other information for authentication purposes. This code does not apply to you if you are filing your tax return for the first time.” Reference: www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/digital-services-individuals/netfile-overview.html (Disclaimer - Please note that my comments are provided for general informational purposes only. @ZoeySiu Месяц назад

      Hello, thank you for your question. If you have already claimed your tax credits on the first TD1 form, you cannot claim the tax credits again on your second TD1. If you claim tax credits on more than one form, your employers may not take enough deductions, which may lead to an unexpected amount of tax owing when you file your tax return. If you have already entered amounts on a TD1 form with your first employer, please make sure you don’t claim the same credits with another employer (i.e. check the box “More than one employer or payer at the same time” and enter "0" on Line 13.) The TD1 is only an estimate. Your actual tax payable or refund (if any) will depend on your total income/ deductions/ credits/ etc. These will be calculated when you file your tax return. (Disclaimer - Please note that my comments are provided for general informational purposes only. This is not tax advice. Also, I have no liability or responsibility over your tax return.) Thank you!

    My daughter and son both are attending univeristy. Can I claim a total of 10,000 tax credit under tuition ?

    • @ZoeySiu
      @ZoeySiu 2 месяца назад

      Hello, thank you for your question. Regardless of who paid the tuition fees, the tuition must be claimed by the student first. If the student has no tax payable, any unused tuition may be carried forward to future years or transferred to spouse or common-law partner, or parent or grandparent. There are some limitations. For example, each student can only transfer up to $5,000 of the current year’s federal tuition amount. You can claim the unused tuition amounts from all of your children (up to a maximum of $5,000 per student.) If you have a spouse or common-law partner, you can choose who will receive the transfer amounts for each child. Thank you! Accordingly to the principal residence exemption formula, can I deduce that after buying a new home, if I can sell my old home within 1 year, then I do not need to pay any capital gain for selling my old home?

    • @ZoeySiu
      @ZoeySiu 3 месяца назад

      Hello, thank you for your question. If you meet the conditions set by the CRA, you can designate your property as your principal residence, and eliminate or reduce the capital gain. Generally, for each year, a family unit can only designate one property as principal residence. However, it is normal for people to sell a principal residence and move into another one in the same year. The "1+" in the formula ensures that when you move, both your old home and your new home will be treated as principal residence in the year of the move, even though only one of them can actually be designated as such for that year. The “1+” only applies when the taxpayer was Canadian resident during the year in which they acquired the property. (Disclaimer - Please note that my comments are provided for general informational purposes only. This is not tax advice. Also, I have no liability or responsibility over your tax return.) Funny, under the Climate plan, I was receiving nearly $180 every quarter., and THE next gov payment should have been received in April, but DID not. The gov, retained it. They began the Carbon tax in Jul and the new payment is $51 (for my wife and I). I hate Turdo and the Liberals, they must be voted out.

      Hello, thank you for your comment. If you are eligible for the Canada Carbon Rebate and your tax return was filed after March 15, 2024, your April 2024 payment would be included in a subsequent payment after your return is assessed. If you have questions about your benefits payment, it would be best to contact the CRA! The CRA number for benefits and credits (e.g. GST/HST Credit, Climate Action Incentive Payment, etc.) is: 1-800-387-1193 Regarding your comment about the government, I understand your frustration. I wish they can manage taxpayers’ money more effectively, rather than just continue to take on additional debts. Thank you! Thanks for reply but it seems like a TurdO/Liberal scam. I’m no expert, but I would bet they know a good (if not THE majority) of Canadians pay by the cut off date.i had submitted my income tax and I received an email they would contact me, and I missed the cutoff. What gov does such a tactic? As I, ans MANY have said, the carbon tax was only $51. That’s a drastic drop. No, I have not received any more payments, I’m sure I won’t until Oct and it will again be, $51. Finally, NO, NEVER am I calling CRA under this gov.

      Hello, 謝謝您的問題! 很抱歉沒有立即回復, 工作一直很忙! 首先, 您需要判斷您什麼時候成為加拿大稅務居民。一般來說, 稅務居民身份 (residency for Canadian income tax purposes) 主要取決於 residential ties (例如, 是否在加拿大擁有住宅/ 房屋; 配偶或 common-law partner 是否留在加拿大; dependents 是否留在加拿大; 是否擁有加拿大的銀行帳戶/ 駕駛執照/ 護照, 等等)! 一般來說, CRA 會根據具體情況評估稅務居民身份, 包括 residential ties, length of time/ purpose/ intent of the stay, 和 tax treaty. 一般來說, 加拿大稅務居民必須報告他們在全球的所有收入, 包括海外收入。 一般來說, pension income 在領取當年納稅。 符合 Income Tax Act 的 criteria 的 foreign pension 可以轉入 RRSP。我建議您諮詢熟悉加拿大和香港 tax treaty 的專業會計師或 Financial Planner, 因為 foreign pension 的稅務處理可以很複雜。 Reference: taxinterpretations.com/cra/severed-letters/2014-0522671e5 謝謝! (Disclaimer - 我的評論僅供參考, 這不構成專業的稅務/會計建議; 另外, 由於我沒有關於您的情況的任何具體信息, 因此我無法評論您的 residency status for Canadian income tax purposes.)

      Hello, thank you for your question. Regarding income tax filing, you need to determine your residency status for Canadian income tax purposes to know your tax filing requirements. To determine residency status for income tax purposes, the CRA looks at all of the relevant facts, such as residential ties, the length of stay, and tax treaty. Regarding Canada Child Benefit (CCB), if you are eligible for the CCB, to keep getting your CCB payments every year, you must file your tax return every year. You must file your tax return even if you have no income. If your situation is very complex, please consult with a professional or contact the CRA. Hello, thank you for your question. If you are a newcomer in 2024 and you are eligible for the benefits, such as the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), you can apply for the benefits in the year you become a Canadian resident for income tax purposes. You do not need to wait until you do your tax return to get these benefits. In the year you become a Canadian resident for income tax purposes, and if you are eligible for the benefits, you can submit form RC151 or RC66 to apply for the benefits and credits. If you have children, you can use Form RC66 to apply for the Canada Child Benefit, GST/HST credit, the climate action incentive payment and any related provincial or territorial programs you may be eligible for. You may also have to complete Schedule RC66SCH. Since most of the benefits are based on family income, on Form RC66, you will need to report your income information. To continue receiving the benefits and credits in subsequent years, including any related provincial or territorial payments, you have to file a tax return each year, even if you do not have any income in the year. If your situation is very complex, please consult with a professional or contact the CRA. (Disclaimer - Please note that my comments are provided for general informational purposes only. This is not tax advice. Also, I have no liability or responsibility over your tax return/ benefits.) Hello Zoey, just to be sure I understand it correctly, if I hold a condo unit overseas worth more than cad$100k, and use it for personal use, do I simply answer 'No' on my T1 tax return when asked if I have held specified foreign property? And when I sell it in future, I understand I can designate it as principal residence to reduce tax. My question is, do I have to tell CRA anywhere on the tax filing form now that I hold this condo unit to allow me remit the sale proceeds back to Canada in future without any problems ? Many thanks.

    • @ZoeySiu
      @ZoeySiu 7 месяцев назад

      Hello, thank you for your questions. Per the CRA, “Specified foreign property does not include personal-use property. Personal-use property is generally defined as property owned by the taxpayer that he or she or a related party uses primarily for personal or enjoyment purposes.” If you don’t own any specified foreign property costing more than $100,000, then you don’t need to file a T1135. While personal-use property do not need to be reported on T1135, Canadian resident taxpayers must report and include all the income they earn from foreign property. This means that there may be capital gains in the future, if the proceeds from disposition exceeds the cost. You may be able to designate this property as your principal residence and eliminate a portion (or all) of the capital gains, if you meet the criteria set by the CRA. When you dispose of (or are considered to have disposed of) your principal residence, you can fill out Form T2091IND Designation of a Property as a Principal Residence by an Individual (Other Than a Personal Trust) to designate the property as a principal residence. In order to designate a property as a principal residence, there are some conditions that must be met. Also, for each year, a family unit can only designate one property as principal residence. If you own multiple properties, you will need to determine which property has the highest capital gain and plan accordingly. When I select not to report my spouse income, Wealthsimple omits to generate the form of application for 2024 Ontario Trillium Benefit. Hello, thank you for your question! I can only provide general comments, since I don’t have sufficient information to comment on your specific situation. If you have questions about your specific situation, please contact the CRA. Generally, Form ON‑BEN is attached to the tax return and filed to the CRA with the tax return (electronically or by mail.) Based on the information in the tax return, the CRA will determine the eligibility for the benefit. If you choose to file your tax return by mail, you can attach form ON-BEN to your tax return and send it to your tax centre. If you already filed your tax return and did not attach form ON-BEN, you can send the required information to your tax centre to apply for the benefit. Please take a look at the CRA Guide T4044 (Employment Expenses) for details. Eligible employment expenses include any GST/ HST paid on these expenses. Alternatively, you may be able to get a rebate of the GST/HST you paid. The invoices/ receipts of the expenses would show whether any GST/HST were included. I am not sure which software you use. @@ZoeySiu I know. It’s crazy. And we are only at 17 cents per liter carbon tax right now and they want to bring it to 61 cents per liter! I did the math and at 61 cents it would mean I pay $36 on a full tank for carbon tax alone and that doesn’t include the sales tax with the carbon tax amount being taxed again too! I have a friend in Colorado and they currently pay like 68 cents per liter for gas now as they have ZERO carbon tax. We are paying almost $1.30 more per liter where I live. We are a rich country with so many resources and if we looked after our own people first we could be a much better and happier country. The roads are terrible too which causes wear and tear on your car and the truth is there are many people neglecting car maintenance as they don’t have the extra cash to spend on that so public safety is being compromised and the risk will grow more as time passes on and more wear and tear happens. I could write a book on all this madness. It’s the same with things like alcohol. They keep raising taxes and it does not make people stop and some will say that don’t matter to me as I don’t drink but that’s the wrong way to look at it. In Colorado you can buy 12 bottles of moosehead beer imported from New Brunswick (so to the western USA) for $12.99 and here’s it almost $40 for the same thing. We pay enough tax and people more than pay for their healthcare costs many times over throughout the course of their lives. I figure that considering all the tax on top of your income tax you are literally paying about 2/3 of every dollar in tax and they want more! I’m hoping for a change to make things better but we are so far in debt now that I don’t see things being good ever again. Even if taxes were reduced now companies will keep prices up to gouge you and make more profits. Sorry for my rant! 😊

      Hello, thank you for your question. In Wealthsimple Tax, under the general questions section “Property and things you may have invested in”, there is a question “Did you dispose of your principal residence in 2023?” If you answer “Yes” to this question, this will add a section “Sale of Principal Residence.” Per the information on CRA website, “If you sold or if you were considered to have sold your property in 2023 and it was your principal residence, you have to report the sale and designate the property on Schedule 3, Capital Gains (or Losses). In addition, you also have to complete Form T2091(IND), Designation of a Property as a Principal Residence by an Individual (Other Than a Personal Trust). Complete only page 1 of Form T2091(IND) if the property you sold was your principal residence for all the years you owned it, or for all years except one year, being the year in which you replaced your principal residence.” Reference: www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-return/completing-a-tax-return/personal-income/line-12700-capital-gains/principal-residence-other-real-estate/sale-your-principal-residence.html If your situation is very complex, please consult with a professional or contact the CRA.
