    Hey there! Good news, this was suggested on my YT homepage in the first 8 slots, even though it has 499 views and 20 likes (after mine ;) )... However, I've got some questions: 1. I was ready to back the Kickstarter campaign, but it seems like you posted this video a day before it ended. :( Is there any way for me to be a backer still? I'd like to give you my money. :) 2. I noticed that the packet tossed into the self-growing kit and the diaper looks to be a packet of the mycelium spawn. For the diaper, it seems that's intended to be tossed into a soiled diaper prior to disposal, but that didn't tell me much... Is the packet made of a biodegradable cellulose that dissolves upon contact with moisture or is it made of a plastic that is edible by the mycelium? 3. Are the diapers in the campaign made of the same plastic fibers that the mycelium is allegedly able to eat, or are they composed of biodegradable materials regardless? Is the diaper intended to be food for the mycelium in addition to whatever soiled the diaper? 4. You mentioned in another comment that the mycelium would do well at digesting PLA-based plastics. Have you considered targeting the 3D printing community? One of the most commonly used plastics for the hobby level of that industry is PLA (and PLA derivatives) and could be a good market to target, especially because many of the people in that hobby are looking for what to do with their failed prints (I could also see people adding mycelium to their prints mid-way through so that the print "self-destructs" over time). Additionally, the FAQ mentions that the mycelium eats PET, but what about PETG? That's probably the 2nd most used material in the hobby 3D printing community, so that'd be an extra bonus if it eats that as well. Thank you for starting and sharing this campaign, and I look forward to seeing where it goes! I'm quite excited to try and join in the community when it opens up to us who only found out about it from this YT video, albeit a day too late! 😅

      Hey! Thanks for the thoughtful questions 🙏🏼 1. This was my 3rd video on the concept but you’re right I could have posted it a bit earlier. Either way the Kickstarter still allows for late pledges. You can also follow our bigger launch later this year. 2. Correct, moisture like pee/poop are main activators of the dormant fungi 3. Yes, we use standard plastics found in diapers. No novel alternative materials. This makes the diaper perform better and proves the large scale ability of the fungi 4. Not currently in the road map but it’s a fantastic idea. I’ll mention it in our next R&D meeting

    • @DJBillyQ

      @@ImTero thank you for the reply! I greatly appreciate someone as responsive as you for these sorts of things, because I think this project is very exciting and I'd like to know how I can help scale it up! 1. I'm not quite sure how to sign up as a late pledge... Is there a website that you've created that can link me to those resources, along with any other questions I might have about the project? 2. I realize the moisture provided by waste material are the main activators, but how does that moisture permeate the spawn culture and get it to start propagating outside of the sealed packet? 3. Ahhh okay, so I'm guessing the fungus requires additional substrate to survive and eat the plastic? Or can the mycelium survive solely on plastics? (assumedly plastics with a high exposed-surface-area-to-weight ratio so that the mycelium can more quickly eat the plastic) 4. Thank you! I would love to be able to toss my failed 3D prints into my compost pile, but since PLA typically only composts in industrial composting facilities, we typically don't have the ability to fully absolve ourselves of this guilt, but we tend to be a very eco-conscious sort of folk... especially since 3D printing allows for shipping raw materials and then determining what they turn into later, thus lowering our carbon footprint! ;) I think the type of fungus you've cultivated has some great potential to make biodegradable plastics more guilt-free for a TON of people in the hobbyist 3D printing community. :) 5. BONUS QUESTION: Have you thought of 3D printing your shipping materials out of PLA that's had the fungus inoculated into the prints, so that you can say "when you've removed the contents of this package, toss them in your compost bin."? Even if it's not 3D printed, using mycelium as a rigid packing material has been a cool new trend I've been seeing that seems very applicable to your value proposition. :) Cheers from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA! (and let me know if you want me to do any tests in a dry climate!) :D

  • @hiddenlawyer
    @hiddenlawyer 4 дня назад

    Maybe it is just my viewpoint, but this video feels a lot more like a sales pitch than being informative (and thus selling itself). I am interested, but what are the actual numbers? There are so many different types of plastics, how does this come into play? Are there by-products and if so, what are the effects? Is there 3rd party validation that this actually works and is scalable? Is this product just a neat little experiment or is it viable to scale per household (like at home composting)? Don't get me wrong, you drum up a lot of excitement, but that is every scammy sales pitch on YT these days, we need less of the flashy stuff and more down to earth science built on transparency and collaboration (working with the scientific community and seeking out criticism).

    • @hiddenlawyer
      @hiddenlawyer 4 дня назад

      Just reminds me of the big plastic clean up over a year ago with that autmated robot thing. Everyone seemed to be super excited about it and on the surface sounded fantastic, but was ultimately a band aid on the massive wound. When selling a baby step as if it were a stride is not success and could be harmful in the public opinion, possibly diverting funds towards something that does help but is nowhere near as entertaining or flashy.

      Thanks for the feedback! Very understandable and all good questions. Many of which we have answers, and some not. We launched on Kickstarter as its a place where new projects come to life with community efforts. If we would be 100% done then we would just launch billion ton waste contracts all around the world. We already have 3rd party validation on some of the by-products (e.g. CO2 released from the polymers) and degradation (with FTIR, SEM, etc from couple top universities). Our patents will be published soon (which required this validation) and we're working on a 3rd party validated white paper. Stay tuned!

    The Christans hijacked The Winter Solstice celebration from the "pagans" to con them into converting to Christianity. The origins of Christmas comes from the culture of the Sami people of Scandanavia (The North Pole). They were like the Native Americans to their land. The aboriginals. They had reindeer herds, sleighs, tipis made from reindeer hides, they grew red and white mushrooms under evergreen trees and when they were ready to harvest they cut them and put a string through the stem and hung them on the evergreen tree to dry (ornaments on an evergreen tree), the northern lights are the lights on the tree, once the mushrooms were dry and ready (on Winter Solstice) the Shaman (Santa) would put them in his sack and deliver them down the (tipi) chimney and put them inside the drying stockings hung by the fire, they ate the mushrooms that gave them the spirit and made the reindeer fly high (spaced out on magic mushrooms). The Sami people culturally have always dressed in bright red and green and blue colors with pointy hats and pointy shoes (elves). You can go there and see the Sami people who still live this way today. Although they don't live in tipis anymore but still dress the same and have reindeer. Sad that this religion called Christianity has stolen other cultures just to con others into believing their made up stories. We celebrate the Winter Solstice. The true HUMAN holiday of all cultures all over the world. 🌬❄💙

    I think you should be looking at median wages instead of averages. This would make for a better comparison, as averages in the U.S. are very inflated due to the number of billionaires and multimillionaires. If you compare Northern Europe to the U.S., you generally see a much higher median wage in Europe. In other words, the majority of the population in Northern Europe earns more than the majority of the U.S. population. Taxes are higher in Europe in general, but they cover free healthcare, subsidized education, and strong social benefits. In the U.S., people often pay thousands for insurance, medical care, and schooling. When you factor those costs in, the average Dane (and others in Northern Europe) often ends up better off financially than the average American.

      So you say that a lot of the time the net wage in the US is way higher. But statistically speaking that is just not true when comparing to the better off european countries. But yes US 1% or even 10% wages go crazy

      If you want to compare Denmark to the US you would have to compare it to like just Massachusetts or Maryland which are similar in population. Those states both have larger economies than Denmark. They are also similar with relatively high taxes. You would compare the US to the European Union which are closer structurally as entities.

    • @Nightwalker86

      This was very well-stated. I would like to add something tangential; people compare the US to the EU as if they were competitors, which implies similar economic situations. This is not true. Europe was built from literal rubble and rocks after World War II destroyed almost all capital-based infrastructure. The US was the bigger of two world superpowers and had a near monopoly on the European reconstruction. Even with this massive advantage, far better geography, and far more natural resources, the US vs the EU is a reasonable comparison today. I think that highlights how ineffective the US is at the policy level relative to its peers.

      Fair point that the range is even bigger with the wealthy as said in the video. But it’s also huge on minimum salaries. In Finland it’s like 1,800e/month and California about $5,500/month. So Nordic people definitely don’t earn more than Americans. And yes you get more for the taxes in Europe as explained in the video but many of those benefits are being cut/reduced as the economies have failed to grow

    You forgot healthcare. We’re planning a move to France. Yes, taxes are high but the middle class is robust and the quality of life is much higher than the US. Plus, no guns.

      Yes health care difference is like day and night. But France was/is very unsafe as well. And def there are guns. Charlie Hebdo attack was not an isolated incident. There’s major riots yearly.

    its insane how low the taxes are in the USA even in the high tax states its still far lower then here in Australia. Sure we get "free" healthcare which still cost money btw but the way lower tax rate would easily pay for much better privet health insurance.

    • @Nightwalker86
      @Nightwalker86 Месяц назад

      This isn't quite right. US health care is a functional monopoly with infinitely inelastic demand, best stated as "pay this or suffer". Let's say you are hit by a car and need a hip replacement. In Spain, maybe that would cost $15k and be assisted by the government. In the US, they might calculate the optimal price as 120k. No amount of tax benefits will overcome that. And you would think, okay that's a special example because of the car accident. But then you multiply it by the entire spectrum of health care. Where I live now, if I call an ambulance, it has no cost. My ambulance company charged $2300 for a ride to the hospital. Etc etc. It's a huge net loss on the population. Nationalized health is a far better system.

      Not mentioned was we in the US also pay into Social Security and Medicare as a percentage of each paycheck. We take home 55-65 percent of what we actually earn

    • @Kevin_Rhodes

      @@Nightwalker86 How much healthcare costs in the US depends on who you work for. The "list prices" are farcical. Personally, I have excellent insurance through my employer so my cost for any given doctor visit is either $25 or $40. A hospital visit is $100. Drugs are $2-25 depending on the drug. With an absolute maximum out of pocket cost per year cap of $2000. So if I get hit by a car and need a hip replacement and rehab, it would cost me a maximum of $2000/yr. And as a rule, the better/higher paying job, the less it costs you. It's a stupid system, but enough people are insulated from it as I am that it will never change. It's better to be poor to middle-class in Europe, but better to be upper-middle-class to rich in the US. Very much by design.

    • @Kevin_Rhodes
      @Kevin_Rhodes Месяц назад

      @@michaelmorgan8311 It's a low percentage, and only up to a certain annual wage. - IIRC ~$168K currently, and if you live more than about 10 years into retirement you will likely get back more than you pay in.

      @@Nightwalker86 Yeah that is what insurance is for. My point is we pay so much tax and still need privet health insurance if you want any non emergency treatment other wise you'll wait 3 years to get it sorted though the government. Just getting 100% privet insurance instead of insane taxes and privet insurance sounds alot cheaper to me.
