Woodturning with Dick
Великобритания
Добавлен 16 ноя 2020
I've been woodturning since 1986, when I was 12 years old. All self taught, aside from the initial instructions from my father, who had bought a lathe and who's son wanted to have a go, and I LOVE it. I LOVE the way the wood talks to you as soon as you pick it up and when it talks to you during the making. In 2015 my partner Lenore, who is a professional gilder, asked me to make her something small, dark and deep, like a little barrel, I did - out of a small piece of ebony I had in the workshop. A week later she presented me with the inside covered in 24ct Gold leaf and it blew my mind. We then set about making many pieces that could incorporate gilding and we set up a company called 'Moth and Mirror' to sell our creations.
Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? No, no, no, it's wood turned art 😁
I love this for so many reasons, I hope you enjoy the journey that I try to take you as you watch the video from start to finish. I would love a comment, and maybe, if you're so inclined, a thumbs up 👍 🤗

Great project - love the colours!
Thank you Big Tel. Just watched your drone footage! Very calming 👍👍👍
Very nice. From comments below "Blurple", my new favourite colour. I know, I know, I'm a heathen and it should be a display piece, but, I can just see it sitting on my Christmas Table with several different cheeses and a dip in the bowl with a basket of mixed dry biscuits along side and a really nice bottle of Port - sorted. Love it.
🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 None of that for you this Christmas mate! Lettuce leaves and water only! 😻 Hey, while you’ve got your feet up chilling, you can watch and comment on the videos you haven’t see yet! Hope to see you again soon sir and hope those udders aren’t too swollen 😘 Blurple 🥰
Great project and sculpture not sure about the gilding, just a preference thing 👍
Thank you John, t’was a fun one. Just reminded me I need to make a box for this one in order to take it to a show 👍 Not that keen on the gilding myself tbh, but customers seem to love it 😻
птичка сделана на отлично , но крылья , что мужику женское платье - вообще не личат .
Yes, I agree! The wings need to be much better 👍👍👍
This is real pretty Dick really love the look
Thank you Wade, there’s room for improvement, but I was pleased for some firsts 😀😀😀👍
Amazing piece! I would like to try turning some Yew some day.
Yew wanna turn me? Every time I see your work you turn me Michael 🤣🤣🤣🤗❤️
@@WoodWithD Ummm...
Blurple is my favorite color shift combo. Lovely piece. Really impressed with how good the ridges looked at the end.
🤣🤣🤣 I actually even looked at my keyboard trying to work out how you misspelled Purple, but then it dawned on me 🤣🤣🤣 Blue and Purple = Blurple! 🤣 Re ridges. Lenore is far more used to using Daz and when I showed what I’d done she did that ‘’that’s nice dear’’ with undertones of ‘I could have done that soooooooo much better’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣 😢
Beautiful!
Thank you Doug! I must catch up on some of your work soon! 👍👍👍
I just love your imaginative pieces; and inspiration to combine other materials with beautiful wood; thank you for sharing with us.
Thank you for your kind words as ever Mr Baxter. See you again soon. 🤔 Though it may be a few weeks as I’ve nothing currently in the pipeline, but I do need to restock some small medium bowls, so may just do some quick 5-10 minute videos of bowls, mainly showing their shape and finish. Art may have to wait a little while 😢 😀😀😀
@@WoodWithDJust as well I have your mug to keep me company in the workshop! Surprisingly, Mrs B lets me keep it in the kitchen cupboard and she even fills it for me occasionally (but only on condition it is taken to the workshop - so it is working out great!) Keep well, my friend.
@@davidbaxter5132 🤣🤣🤣 I wondered where that mug went!! 🤣🤣🤣 only kidding! I’m glad she’s accepted it and it’s getting you more drinks 😀👍🤗
Very pretty piece. How did you estimate the size of the counterbalance piece that you had to screw to the back? (or was it just luck?)
Thank you kindly. Once on the lathe and I’d established it was WAY to off centre balance, I put a pin prick of a mark in dead centre, removed from lathe. Put a centre punch in the vice and then balanced the piece on the punch and then found a slightly too heavier piece of wood (nice heavy bit of bog oak on this occasion) and trimmed bits off till it balanced 😀😀😀
@@WoodWithD Thanks
I wish you had included that process in the video. 😸
@@gemofthewoods5802 Sorry Gale 😞 🤗
@@WoodWithD he he he
Sweetie pants Yew are one creative fella. Good on you, man.
Thank yew my friend! 🤗🤗
Striking piece. ❤
Thank you Mr W 🤗
beautiful
Thank you DWA 😀😀👍👍🤗
Wow wow wow what can I say but wow!!! Don’t know how you imagine your final design from what you start with but it works every time and I just love the shape and additions look fabulous in the resin. Another great piece of art!!!
But, but, but, I try to explain the plan from the get go. I can see it, after a little while planning it in my head or occasionally sketching a plan on a piece of paper 🤔🤗
Nice really love this piece
Me too, was a fun one. 👍👍👍
Nice to see you turning again this really looks great nice job Dick. Blessings to you and Lenore
Hey Wade, thank you kindly! Hope you are well! Think I’m gonna try to get one video out a month, more if I can 😃
bravo ,very good enjoyable watch
Im very pleased you enjoyed it Clive 😀😀😀
Love that comment “sharpen your tools” 😂
🤣🤣🤣 Yarp 😁😁😁
What is this trickery - Oh wait a minute. Seems to have reduced in size sevaral times. The challenge now is to make one without all the little errors cus you have done it before and it will be "perfick". Love your quirky ideas. Fun piece but so difficult. Well done.
Errors?!? Me?!? Neverrrrrrrr! 🤣🤣🤣😁
Wow 🤩 beautiful piece of art 👏 Always loved seeing you dance. Well done another amazing piece and the guilding really finishes it off perfectly.
Awwww, thank you birthday girl 🎂🎂🎂 I made it specially for your birthday 🎁 😃😃😃
Lovely piece, beautiful interpretation of a lovely subject, excellent work
Wow! Thank you for the kind words Mr Bradford 🤗🤗🤗
That is an amazing and inspired piece! Great work Richard!
Thank you! Cheers! 🥰
Love it

I definitely wasn't thinking gown or skirt when you started this. Pretty cool piece.
Surprise 🥳😁 👗
You are a frickin genius, Dick. I so enjoy your vids, keep it up.
Now comments like that I LIVE FOR - thank you! Though she never says that!
Im always pleasantly surprised by what your brain comes up with for artistic pieces. 🤯
Thanking you Gale 🤗 🤗 🤗
Always over the moon to see a new video from you Dick! What goes on your mind though! Must be so busy in there - thank goodness you've got such wonderful skills to convert your ideas into reality. Such a a lovely piece - even the "floor" was beautiful. All the best
Oh hells yes, I think I might be a little insane 😜😜😜😜😜🍉🍫🍷🐑🎂🤣
Great piece Dick. It wasn’t at all necessary, but the dance floor is the part that ties it all together (so to speak). Wonderful work. Beautiful piece.
Thank you Doug, I really enjoyed this one and was SO pleased how it all came together! Little nervous drilling that floor though 🤣☺️
wow, extremely creative and well done! my Fred Astaire wife also approves
Fred Astaire wife? You’re gonna have to explain that one now 🤣🤣🤣
Love the piece, love the dancing, but most of all love the orange of that opepe!
Hey Mr Peers! ☺️ That first hit of orange on those first cuts was a little like I’d been Tangoed! 🍊 🤣👍
That is very cool. I love the interpretation ❤🎉
Thank you kindly, it’s just been in my head for a while, it is fantastic to bring it to life 👍👍👍
Lenore‘s gilding is most lovely but holy hell Dick can dance! We have enjoyed such a lovely creative mind. Dick can dance…. And turn lovely art!

Lovely. I'm doing several off center projects just now so I'm going back and watching folks' techniques. Yours is great!
Wonderful! If you see my Lignum off centre bowl, that went a bit wrong, but ended up a gorgeous piece! This was the more perfected process 😁😁😁👍 Good luck with your projects 🤗

Welcome back!! Beautiful bowl as always, showing off your artistic eye and skills. Loved the pink ivory stunning piece of wood and it really shone next to the oak. Can’t wait to see what you create next. By the way I found my bowl I made 😁 I’d packed it away for safe keeping.
Awww you’re the best Kristina ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Glad you found your bowl 🥰
What a creative idea 👌
Thank you! Are you going to make one?
I like Yew too!
I LOVE yew actually!
A beautiful clever combination of two of my favorite woods.
Thank you for your very kind words! The opposing black and opposing white, really worked me thinks 😀
Consider me impressed. I had no idea exactly what it was until the end. Glad to see a new video from you.
Thanks Ben, good to be filming and editing again. These short videos take a while to film and edit, it’s nice to get your lovely comment 😁😁😁
I made some things out of yew I didn't know people were allergic to it, every day is a school day.
Yer, apparently it’s landed people quite suddenly in hospital with hard issues, others with major skin irritation. I like you don’t seem affected by any woods. I have however witnessed by niece break out in very red inflamed arms, when she was visiting as a young girl and I gave her the soft furry end of a banksia nut to play with 😮
