Updating a 1973 Hammond Organ
This video shows how to update a 1973 solid state Hammond "Maverick" organ to the current technology with very little effort. Use of a soldering gun is not required, but lots of patience is. Thanks for your interest and please try this at home!

Poor Man's Hammond Vibrato Repair
Просмотров 29 тыс.11 лет назад
This clip shows how to fix a Hammond M3 organ vibrato scanner which is "motor-boating." A typical cause is internal metal whiskers shorting out the contacts. These "whiskers" can normally be flashed away with two small 12 volt batteries hooked up in series or (in this video) "The Zapper." Just make sure you know what you are doing... Feel free to check out my other clips on various aspects of H...
Poor Man's Hammond M3 Foldback
Просмотров 47 тыс.11 лет назад
This video shows how to add foldback for the highest drawbar tones on the upper 18 keys. The wires are already present and no additional parts are needed....(hence the name "Poor Man's" ). Gives much more accent to the upper keys, especially through a Leslie. You'll need basic tools, a soldering gun, and LOTS of patience. This is a video version of my original 1999 written instructions which ar...
Poor Man's Hammond L100 to Motion Sound Leslie Connection
Просмотров 29 тыс.11 лет назад
This video shows how to connect an L100 to a Motion Sound Leslie unit with simple plug & play cables. This is probably the least expensive method for getting real tonewheel sound through a real spinning Leslie type horn. Have a look at several of my other videos dealing with Hammonds organs and Leslie speakers.....and ENJOY!
Poor Man's Hammond M3 to Leslie 145 Connection- Part 2
Просмотров 9 тыс.11 лет назад
This Part 2 shows how to connect the Main/Echo/Ensemble switch to an M3. These M/E/E switches are relatively cheap compared to a Choral/Tremolo switch. They give you the option to play through the M3's 12" speaker, the Leslie 145, or both at the same time. Remember that you are using 120 volts for switching so be extra careful and make sure you understand the connections. Have a look at several...
Poor Man's Hammond M3 to Leslie 145 Connection - Part 1
Просмотров 25 тыс.11 лет назад
This video shows how to make a simplified connection between an M3 and Leslie 147 by omitting the Main/Echo/Ensemble switching. (My Part 2 video shows how to add the M/E/E switch.) Since this involves 120 volt switching, you should understand exactly what you are doing before attempting this at home. Thanks for your interest and feel free to check out my other videos.

For those of you trying to reach Bob Sleicher for a Zapper, he passed away in 2020.
Hi! Doing this project in 2024, having a great deal of trouble trying to take off the metal cover that houses the wires for the upper manual, as I can't access the screws underneath and I'm not able to raise the manual enough. Anyone have any tips or advice?
The Hammond organ cured my depression
Fyi to all m2 owners, this will not work for you. It uses wiring from the percussion the m2 does not have
Gold..
Wow the best foldback vid of all time nice and clean clear instructions I’m gonna dive in to my m-102 often wondered if it’s possible to change the preamp tubes w/ some hotter tubes with out a fire
Sounds pretty darn good to me! 👍🎹🎹
That looks like the innards of my Combo-2 preamp. BTW can anyone tell me what gauge wire I should use to rewire the Combo-2?
Actually that’s the organ solo from Walk On, and it looks like he’s pitch bending with a custom made ball type controller, that he probably made. I never saw him reach for the power switch to “slew” the organ.
Would love to see how to connect those ventilator and others to cv
How much does this cost I have the hammond m3
Is this the tin whiskers phenomenon that plagues IF transformers in superheterodyne tuners?
Awesome video, thanks, your method looms a lot easier than another video I saw where he was going from underneath somehow
Miss Steve Cropper & Donald Dunn on this version.
Drums need to level back And tighten the whole thing up Please
Oh You are giving away the Gems ❗
Thank you for thoroughly breaking this down however, I don’t have a M3. I have a digital X C3, Hammond organ that I’m trying to do a poor man’s 11 Pin junction box to a 6 pin Leslie cable to my 122 Leslie, so you're helping me get clarity. Thank you so much.
I just rescued an un-maintained M3. The vibrato doesn't work at all. I assume it's gummed up and not spinning (the tonewheel generator was completely seized when I first brought it home), but I went ahead and checked continuity. I was reading right around 20k ohms between ground and each lug. Is that normal, or should there be no continuity at all?
The longer key leverage really makes a difference. TP-80 isnt the same!
The song ending as recorded was enough; didn't need th extended amendment.
Great idea. Simple.
If only the numerous “How To & DIY” videos online were as thorough, detailed , and generous as is this priceless shining example. Thank You .
Does anyone know if Tom is pitch bending the Hammond with the run motor switch or is he running the organ power through a VariAC? Or is it a custom mod built into the organ?
Cool!
Bravo!!
The discussions with this give a lot of BONUS information..like how to ZAP the M-3 and get dendrites handled.
I miss Time is tight 1970
This is awesome, I always wondered how the internal mechanism of the keys worked.
Hi Drawbars888. My B3 started doing the same thing a few days ago. Well today, I pulled the organ out from the wall, removed the back, and proceeded to zap the terminals on the scanner. I actually got continuity on my genuine Radio Shack Micronta analog multi-meter before AND after I zapped the terminals, so I said to myself, "This is never gonna work." Lo and behold, I fired the organ up with the vibrato switches set to off, pulled out a few drawbars, turned up the volume, depressed a couple of keys, took a deep breath, switched the vibrato to on and WOW the vibrato is working like a charm!!! Motorboating gone!!! I used a regular 9 volt transistor radio battery with a pair of test leads taped to the top of the battery for my "zapper". It worked perfectly!!! Thank you so much for this tip!!! On that note, a 9 volt battery can be used also to fix ailing percussion. I did the same thing a few years back because my second/third percussion stopped working. I also found the 9 volt battery fix for the percussion on RUclips. And it also worked perfectly! Here it is. ruclips.net/video/f53EnpKKrYA/видео.html Thanks again!!!
Genius
Can I do this to an M2?
Hi, I am sitting in front of a Hammond 5222L exactly the same than the one in your video. I have a question that you may answer please. Is there a low frequencies speaker and and another one for highs? In your video I can see only the big one, and that's what it's just working on my Hammond. I'm thinking of "updating" the organ as you did in case it does not work properly. Thank you.
Play on, play on 👍👍👍
Greetings all Hammond people I have an E1 85 what do I need to get it up to B-3 specs. I did take the click filter off. Any suggestions would be really great
At least ! A clear and complete video about this delicate mod. And you didn't forget to make it atractive. Thanks and congratulations.
Damn!!! Genius!! Would this mod work with a Hammond M-111?
Oh man, so tight! 💋
But, you don't have reverb/Soft:Brillance on your Leslie? Am i wrong?
DO NOT USE WD40.!
This is great! Thanks.
Hi... Just picked up a M 101 (serial 65585) from a church for free.. it was gifted to the church in 1967 in memory of a loved one.. I'm getting it ready to use in my studio.. I have a 145 Leslie That was used by Ray Charles as well as Little Feat and BB King on their tours through Eastern Canada as a rental with an A100..This 101 has two main 15 inch speakers and a 10 for reverb..my question is , and I do dig your demonstration of method, but how would you go about this process with two speakers..?..I would guess posit one speaker negative other speaker..?... would rather have someone who knows fill me rather than not... thanks in advance Harry S Lear
Drawbars888 - I must have been standing right next to you at this show. It was excellent!
I have a 750 leslie will this work as well
Where is the bloke with the Telecaster, you know, whatsisname, Steve Cropper…
Can you tell me where the wire behind the pedal drawbar goes it’s labeled “B” ?!? Please help if you can
NOT helpful
tears of utter joy.....
Great job, do you still have the instrument 6 years later? I’m embarking on a similar project with my E300. Although I am planning to keep the AO-69. Did you do any before/after comparison between the AO-69 and the AO-28 (if the AO-69 in the E was working)? Mylar caps and click filter aside, I am just interested in other small differences with the 3 series, eg if there is or should be much difference between the sonic profile of the two preamps. Not sure if the mission to reduce key click also led to different design choices in the preamp. Did you make any vibrato mods or is that the native E100 vibrato?
This is one reason why most digital clones of hammond organs don't sound or feel right.
