Hi,
I'm Elli and I play Kantele, a traditional Finnish instrument as my hobby. The most traditional one is the 5 string version, which I also started with, but now I play this more complicated one, Concert Kantele. This has 39 strings and levers to allow adjusting notes to flat or sharp. This means chromatic playing is possible but sometimes challenging as it needs not only fast usage of levers but also muting strings during lever adjustment (unless hearable note slide is wanted).
Väinämöinen also played a special version of Kantele :) in Kalevala so Kantele is tightly bonded to Finnish culture.
I'll try to publish a new video of the songs I like a few times a year.

This song is another beautiful piece from Hannu Syrjälahti and was made for the memory of Urpo Pylvänäinen in 1983. This song was also originally composed for kantele.

This song is originally composed for kantele by Hannu Syrjälahti. The atmosphere in this song is somewhat magical and I like it! This was quite difficult piece for me but I think I did ok. Hope you like it! The song name could be translated in to English as Evening dew in Ilomantsi (Ilomantsi is a municipality in eastern Finland).

The FIRST time this masterpiece was played in the open air was around 30 years ago by the writer and guitarist - Peter Greenbaum, (Peter Green) and am not sure as it was so long ago and cannot remember who the drummer was, but am pretty sure it was not Mick Fleetwood The venue was the Green around the Inner Temple outside the existing religious temple in London EC4 and those of you who who live and work in London will know this is just behind the shops and PUBS off Fleet Street in the open air and was was over 30 years ago by the writer and guitarist - Peter Greenbaum, and was played on the green of the Inner Temple outside the temple - I was involved as the amplifier they had bought with them failed and I (working in Fleet Street) had just built a 75W TRANSISTORISED 12V DC BATTERY powered amp - we rigged it up and played Albatross 5 or 6 times before the batteries died - the test was a success, the music itself was (and still is) world class and as a Techy i realised then that music was the only sane thing left and if nothing else Albatross will be played at 200w aT my passing which sadly is MONTHS rather thAN years - NO REGRETS- Big John

Amazing sounding instrument I hate to ask what it costs.
Watching this, my first impression is what a beautiful place! And then, all these beautiful tones, and this beautiful and amazingly young girl playing such a complicated instrument! Awesome performance, and a very professional video of it! As an afterthought, I also think about the instrument itself. How does anyone come up with ideas like this? It looks like a harp laid down, but there seems to be a lot more to it, with all the levers and that bar at the heel of her hand. And it sounds absolutely amazing! Thank you for putting these videos out there!
