How Children Learn | Lessons from Children's Literature: Learning to Write Part 1
We're continuing our series on How Children Learn: Lessons from Children's Literature. In particular, I'm discussing How Children Learn to Write using an excerpt from Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm to start us off. As a writer myself, I have a lot to say on this topic, so we'll be continuing the discussion in the next video using another example from children's literature. I hope you will subscribe and join me again for more on children and writing instruction.

@@thujahillhomemaking thank you! You’re so sweet. ❤️
Hi! What is the difference between the elementary arithmetic book and the mathematic book? Thank you
@@monicabras9618 hey there! I’m not sure what you mean. I’ll link the website here for you to look over the entire series and read their explanation of the scope and sequence. simplycharlottemason.com/store/the-charlotte-mason-elementary-arithmetic-series/ If you mean, how is it different than a typical mathematics book…the biggest difference is that most of the problems are done orally, there’s minimal writing in the first couple of books, and there’s no drills or flashcards or anything like that. It doesn’t depend on rote memorization like some math courses. Does that answer your question?
I loved all your take aways from the scene. One thought I had was that through life experience and living with his horses… uncle Henry had confidence in his horses… that they were safe for Betsy to learn on.
@@janegreen4185 that’s very true, too. He probably knew they’d be gentle enough to learn to drive, even for a novice. 💜
Thank you for the great review - this helped so much. We LOVED book 1 but I wasn’t sure we’d need book 2. After watching this I knew we needed it. ❤ Thanks!!
So glad that it was helpful to see it. ❤️ We very much needed both books for my kids even though we came into it later than most.
This looks so great, thank you for sharing. I think you just convinced me to use for my kindergartener
I have enjoyed this curriculum as much as the kids have. My 5th grader finished the last chapter of book two this year and my 3rd grader is halfway through book 2 now. We’ve just taken everything at their pace and I can’t even tell you how much it’s helped them both. I wish I’d found it sooner, but I’m also thankful to have found it at all. I hope y’all enjoy going thru it together.
What are your plans for the new year😊. I love your choices.
We’re continuing with many of the same resources we’ve always used: Foundational Phonics (phonics for one child, going back thru it for spelling for another), Cottage Press Language Lessons, trying MCP Mathematics this year, and lots of reading great books for history, science, composer & artist studies. Thanks for watching and commenting. ❤️
I just ordered Foundational Phonics Letter Mastery 3rd edition. I haven’t received it yet, but I did receive book 2 (word mastery) & if book 1 is anything like I’m seeing from book 2 then I’m totally excited!!! I think this will be a relief from trying to juggle AAR (All About Reading) materials and be more enjoyable and effective for both my boys and myself. Praying this be the case. I’ll start book 2 tomorrow with my oldest 😊
If you love Word Mastery, then Letter Mastery will be a hit too. It’s even more comprehensive so you know you’re covering everything you should, but it’s laid out so simply and easy for the mother (or parent) as well. We love it!
Which McGuffey and Treadwell readers go well with these books? Thank you for such a thorough review. This looks like a perfect blend of CM and phonics instruction!
We’ve only used the McGuffeys Original First Reader & the Treadwell Primer as extra practice when needed. Honestly, the new edition has all the reading selections you need for the lesson, so unless your child just wants extra practice or you feel they need more, you don’t need a separate reader at all. We just used them for fun. We absolutely love FP! I’m going to go back thru it for intentional spelling practice & grammar as well. I hope to share soon how we’ll do that.
I used A-F with my daughter. (They had not finished G-L at the time) I so cherish the time homeschooling my daughter before I had to send her to school. (Her little brother has autism, and I just didn't have the help to keep teaching her and take care of him and the baby. 😢 ) She is now a preaching wife and SUCH a gracious person. I would not trade those early Rod and Staff years for ANYTHING.
Some of my fondest memories with my son are with these sweet little workbooks, so I completely understand. ❤️
Hi! I don't know if you have seen From Phonics To Reading level A by Sadlier? I my kindergatener is a fluent reader but I think he needs help spelling like diagraphs, double consonants, er, ur, ar, ir ect... like he can read stripe, three, water, cloud, diplomat, suddenly, valuable, judicial, beneficial and so many long words but when it come to spelling he would for example write watr, thri, clowd, Wonder which one would be good for him.
I’m not familiar with the curriculum you mentioned, but book two is aptly named Word Mastery, so I’d suggest that one. :) We plan to go back thru it for spelling and grammar practice as well once we have finished it for the phonics patterns. Hope that helps!
@@ThisEnchantedHour Oh, thank you so much! How would you use it for grammar and spelling? Phonics to Reading needs the teachers guide and workbook, looks confusing for me that I am not a teachers but seems a good program but it does add up $$. I stumble on your video and loved how this is laid out. I started doing the McGuffey readers and I think this would be a good match.
@@ThisEnchantedHour It's so hard to find a program that its open and go but still a really good program.
@@karinapantoja721 it’s definitely hard to find things that make it simple and easy to teach. I plan to do a video very soon showing how I plan to use it for spelling and grammar. The first book teaches the asl alphabet as a way to practice the letters so we’re going to incorporate that into spelling practice as well. These books are both so easy to adapt to anything related to language that you could use them lots of ways. Book Two works really well with McGuffey’s readers, but I also love that the newest edition of book two has all the reading selections in the lesson. No need to have a separate reader unless you just want more practice. :)
I just purchased Book 2 for my daughter. I would love to see an update video!
I plan to do an update on Book One soon and as soon as we finish with Book Two (or get far enough into it to discuss it) I’ll post an update on that one too. We really love both of these books. I wish I’d found them earlier for my oldest, but he’s made such great progress since starting book 2 last year. The newest edition is a lot more comprehensive but I really love that I don’t need any extra readers or loose pieces to help him build his fluency. Makes it so simple!
@Simply Sweet Homeschool This is so great to hear! I look forward to your update videos, thank you!

We LOVE Foundational Phonics! Excellent review!
I wish I’d found it sooner. We absolutely love it and the kids have learned so much!
This looks so good!
We’ve really enjoyed both books and my kids have made leaps and bounds in reading since we started these.
Thank you for this video! Which were your favorites in the kindergarten set? You mentioned TGTB PreK at the end of the video - how would you compare that curriculum to these books?
I remember he really liked Going on Eagerly and Inside and Outside the most of all the kindergarten set. TGTB prek has a lot more color, but my son and I liked Rod and Staff better because of all the animals we learned about. Rod and staff seems to cover more subject areas in their books. My daughter preferred TGTB over R & S but it was very language arts heavy with just a little math that I recall. My son also focuses better if there’s not a lot of color so R & S might be a better fit with boys.
I have used this curriculum with both of my children and it's the best.
I’m so glad it worked well for you. ❤️ It’s been such a blessing for our homeschool.
Thank you!
*NOTE*: I mentioned that the letters aren’t taught in alphabetical order. They are taught in a way to achieve quick success with reading. The first letters taught are “m”, “a”, and “n”. This allows students to begin building words right away.
Do you know when she’s coming out with the updated version? Trying to decide if I can wait for it or not.
I don’t have an exact date, but it’s in the final draft stages right now. She said the best way to stay informed is to follow on Facebook or Instagram. From what she said the changes to book one are minor. If it’s book two you need, the current edition is wonderful, but I think the changes are probably worth waiting for if you can. ❤️
I just found out the newest edition of Book Two will be released in August of this year. :)
Thank you for discussing the realities of true reading age.
Thank you so much ❤️ I bought all of them 🤗 My daughter will be 3 in 2 months
I hope you and your daughter enjoy them as much as we did. They are still my favorite curriculum that we have ever used. I almost wish I had one more student to take thru them. 😉
Never heard of this reading program ☺️ thank you for sharing 😍
It’s fantastic. We have the 2nd level now and are loving it along with the handwriting books that go along with them. She just released a fun grammar program too.
Thank you so much for this review.
You’re quite welcome.
How long did you spend on the words he learned through play?
We spent a couple days just playing with the words, 10-15 minutes or so. Then once we started reading the primer, he would look at new words on cards, one at a time, then build them with the letters, and then read them in the story. We made slow but steady progress that way. He’s in 3rd grade now and we still build each new word this way. Seems a very organic way to teach spelling and reading simultaneously. Hope that helps!
@@ThisEnchantedHour thank you so much . I tried this today and my daughter loved it. She did want to spell more complex words but she was having fun so I went with it. I’m learning with her personality I have to be creative with the method . Thanks again for the great ideas.
I love interest led reading word idea ! I’m gonna try that. My daughter is frustrated with the script I’m using from all about reading.
Thanks for the insight and sharing the insides of the workbooks. Much appreciated! We are a bilingual family and I'm excited that they offer the same series in espanol.
That’s wonderful! I actually didn’t know that but I can pass that along now. We absolutely loved these workbooks.
We love the mom delights pages. Out of everything we have done and tried I don't think I can go a week without her pages because of how easy it is to customize everything per child
They are definitely a must have in our homeschool too. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for showing this and how you use it in this video. Love the look of this and how affordable it is. 🤩💖
We have loved using this resource the past two years and will continue with it in the fall. It makes it so simple to keep your learning organized
How strict were you about the coloring technique in the first book (A)? My newly 5yo finished the pre-k set of books and begs to do his kindergarten books, but he really struggles with the coloring technique taught in these books (trace the outline, shade in lightly, try to go mainly in one direction the whole time, sky and grass should always be colored horizontally). I see the benefit of teaching good coloring skills, but this has really frustrated us both and prohibited him from moving forward. Is be interested to hear another mom's thoughts
My son was not interested in coloring at all when we did those so we either skipped them, he colored in what he wanted, or I colored some pages as a surprise to find when we did the little lesson. He’s in 2nd grade now, really enjoys coloring & is quite good at it, so I guess I didn’t ruin his skills by skipping those parts. 😂 My sister in law uses these with her son also and has told me he hates to color so he skips those parts. No need to frustrate you both over something he might enjoy later. Hope that helps.
Huh. I guess it hadn't occurred to me that I could skip that. I'll have to surprise him with a return to the school books he so loves! Thank you for the response!
In Lithuania they start school at seven and I've met seven year olds not able to read yet but they learn and the adults are all educated and able to read like everyone else. The best building block for learning is play. So they are still developing their language in other ways and then learn at seven. So you're right, it's totally ok if your child isn't reading fluently at four or five yet. :) ☺️
You’re exactly right! Play is such a powerful learning tool. Based on what I remember from my own school experience, they’re teaching students to read very early now in comparison to past decades when the focus was more on teaching them to read well using practiced skills instead of trying to race other students to fluency.
@@ThisEnchantedHour yeh it's the same in the UK. School starts at four. When I went to Lithuania no one believed me when I said that I started reading at three years old! ☺️ Thank you for your nice reply :)
Which specific books from the series would you buy now that you've had a chance to do them again? I love the look of them and think they may be a good supplement to what I am thinking of doing, but I don't need all of them.
That’s a great question! In the preschool set, my favorites were Counting w Numbers and Doing it Carefully. My faves in the Kinder set were Going on Eagerly and Inside and Outside (this one was our absolute fave bc of the woodland animals 🥰).
I bought the DVD with the elementary arithmetic book one. I'm excited to use it! Will I be good without the big math book that goes with the DVD?
I think you could get by without the book if you’re a visual person that needs to see the lessons acted out. I use both the DVD and the book bc I need both, but the guidebook was also designed to condense CM’s thoughts and practices on mathematics into one place. You can also listen to Richele Baburina on the Delectable Education podcast if you need a better understanding of the methods and the why behind them. The guidebook is K-12 as well so that’s another reason I invested in it. :)
@@ThisEnchantedHour I love the ladies with A Delectable Education. I went ahead and ordered the bigger math book too! It will be helpful for me to see the grand plan even for years ahead. Thank you for your help!
Love your words about kids learning to read because I have a 6 year old & we are not in a hurry. Miss your videos!! ♥️
Thank you. So glad my words could encourage you & thanks for watching. 💜
I would love to hear how this worked out for you.
Tara Hamilton the short version is that we love it! Bc of the craziness of the end of last school year, we stopped at number 25 and have since picked right back up with it this year. My 5 year old daughter who is in kindergarten wanted to do it too, so I started her at the beginning and her brother is working in the middle. If things continue to go as well as they have, I’ll get the 2nd book in the series and continue on. It’s definitely not like any other math out there but I love it for that reason. It’s all very practical and even in book one, some of the exercises are setting the stage for multiplication and division later on. That’s why I wasn’t too concerned that he’s in 2nd grade now and still in book 1 bc I know the foundation for higher skills are being laid as we learn to add and subtract. Does that help?
@@ThisEnchantedHour Yes, thank you!
Thank you so much for this peek inside these beautiful books and how you and your children use them. I'm planning to buy the set 1 and 2 bundle for all the same reasons you mentioned (except my son's name isn't in them...how awesome that your son Finn's is) and now that I've seen your video I'm going to certainly get them while they're on sale!
My twins are just turning 4 this month. Would you start with these or should I start with the other 4 set of preschool activity books. (About 3, Bigger steps etc)
kiradot these are definitely Kindergarten books so unless they’re advanced, I’d start w About Three & those others in that set. We used those too and they’re really simple and sweet but they learn a ton.
I’m using her ideas & everything too! Actually it’s really surprised me how our local school had my daughter’s kindergarten class jump right into writing this year! Eek! Writing whole paragraphs and she feels really lost. So that’s how I found Sherry’s system with the primers etc. She also made her own reading program which is on her website. I like seeing how you used it too and I think I’ll try your sticker idea when my daughter seems too overwhelmed.
m0nkey so glad you’ve found Sherry’s stuff to be helpful! I’ve used bits and pieces of her reading program as well this year after this video was posted. Writing in kindergarten is a bit of a stretch for such young students with growing fine motor skills.
These are beautiful! I’m going to check them out.
Polkadotpearl my kids are still loving these. She has a 2nd set now too.
Could you link the letter tiles you bought, please?

We love these! Thanks for the review!
Thank you for review!!!! Would you say that CM Mason is similar to that of Rays Arithmetic?! Just asking because of the price of the CM Arithmetic is a bit pricey 😬
LUCERO RIVERA it’s very similar, but book one is geared more towards 1st grade, while Rays seems more closely aligned with book 2 in the CM series. I actually just downloaded the pdf of Rays primary arithmetic for next year to try out bc it seems very close to book 2 in the CM series. I had it printed and bound for $11, so that’s definitely going to save some $ next year. I would highly recommend the guide book to use alongside the Rays as a help for you the teacher though. Especially since it covers K-12, not just one grade. Hope that helps!
@@ThisEnchantedHour did you end up using Ray’s arithmetic? Which did you prefer?
@@makerofahome we never made it to Ray’s last year but I will use it as a supplement this year. I’m so glad I took my oldest thru book 1 of CM Arithmetic but in all honesty, I feel like Ray’s would’ve accomplished the same things. Both take a mental math approach and follow the basic CM principles regarding math. Hope that helps.
I was so set on Rod and Staff or CLE for learning to read. Both Biblical , and a strong foundation. I have always been drawn to Charlotte Mason as well. Rod and Staff is heavy in diacritical marks and many many rules. I LOVE the way you have this set up and using Sherry’s book! Do you plan on teaching The diacritical marks as well? Looking for guidance lol this is my first year teaching how to read and I lean towards Rod and Staff because it is so thorough and set up with all you need to do and teach, but there is so much natural beauty in how you have it set up. It seems like a natural way to learn to read! Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!
Erica Vaughn you could use this method with the Rod and Staff Bible nurture and reader series. Grade 1 readers in that have no diacritical marks and neither does the original McGuffeys readers. I’m still debating over whether to teach the diacritical marks bc it has helped him read long vowels more easily. Using the Treadwell readers, I simply taught each word out of context so I was sure he knew them before reading. It takes a little longer that way but I was impressed with how much the stories built upon previously learned words. And keep in mind that learning to read is such an ebb and flow...one day they read it perfectly, the next they forget half the words, then a week later they’re reading it on their own. LOL I’ve learned in the short time we’ve been doing this that gentle consistency is the best way to make progress. Hope that helps! ❤️
Erica Vaughn and maybe I should add a word of caution about some of the stories in the Treadwell readers. One that we haven’t read yet is an old folktale that talks about wanting to hang someone so we will skip that one. The other stories are things like Billy Goats Gruff and standard tales, but just wanted to mention you might want to look online at free copies of those readers to see stories included. We actually started in Unit 1 of the R&S Bible reader last year bc the first word he learned was God and there’s little pictures interspersed in the sentences to make reading easier in the beginning. My plan is to alternate stories from Treadwell and McGuffeys until the end of the year and then I’m shifting to McGuffeys for next year. Thanks for watching!
Does rod and staff preschool teach letter sounds?
Elizabeth Kenyon it’s not specifically a phonics program but it does teach letter recognition, number recognition, and a variety of other important skills. Hearing and Helping in the Kindergarten workbooks has some letter sounds work. I used teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons to teach letter sounds
Elizabeth Kenyon let me add that they learned most of their letter sounds from B is for Breakdancing Bear but the formal letter sounds instruction came from 100 Easy lessons. Hope that helps!

I just made my kiddos a hands on bookshelf...using dollar tree pebbles for counting and addition cards, dominoes with cards to find all of the addition facts that make a certain number or just matching for my littlest, and spelling cards with homemade letter clothespins and dots for all of my kiddos to practice with. So I took one manipulative, but made it useful to several kiddos. Play based learning sticks so much better than workbooks. I am loving our new set up....just thought I would share as you like similar things. So I have 1 shelf literacy, 1 shelf math, and 1 logic or other special activity for my youngest. The top of the shelf is for Melissa and Doug hands on toys...like beading, stackers, abacus, ECT... Gentle learning is so much more fun....and relaxing for momma. We just slowly teach them that the learning shelf is only for school time...or pieces will get lost....and non schooling times can be outside, reading, or independent crafting...but the learning shelf is so special. I used different colored index cards for different kiddos so while only using one manipulative they know whose cards are whose by sight. Dollar tree also has awesome clips for holding cards together.
great ideas! Very Montessori.
I'm also using her lesson books with my 1st and 3rd grader. We love it!
Tathi Mitchell yay!
The dollar tree has rubber letter puzzles...and if you buy 3 you can make awesome letter box from them...super awesome and inexpensive🤓. Thought this may be of help to someone on a tight budget like me.
Brenda Berry great idea!
