thanks.
Couldn't you just put a relay on the isolating solenoid earth wire that was actuated by the ignition? So when the ignition is off, it breaks the circuit to the Auxiliary battery?
You can, I just came to the conclusion keep it simple and now use a manual isolator
@chrisp10022 last night, I hooked up a relay from the paking light circuit to the isolator. So now the Aux battery only chargers when I turn the parkers, or lights on.
I saw this amazing lantern on "AB camping" channel and I bought it. Sending to Europe is not cheap, it costs about 150 euros. But when I got it in my hands I said, for this price you get more than a beautiful camping lantern. The desingn and quality just fantastic and I think I will buy another one in the future, because for me at the moment it is the best and most beautiful camping lantern that can be found on the market today.
Excellent Video. May I know what the SKU (model) is for your KAON battery fuse holder? I'm trying to get one in my ITECH120X battery and starter battery as well.
The product code is KS0569 here is a link: www.kaon.com.au/battery-fuse-bracket-toyota-prado-150-120-fjcruiser
Good info. I used to work as an electrician building emergency vehicles (police fire ambulance)and tradie vans, utes and some campervan stuff. We used to drill holes and install grommet or glands. Whilst that is definitely an effective way to get cables through the body of a car its never been something i would want to do to my own car. Sika flex 521 UV is an awesome product we used to use for all sealing of penetrations. Either white or black depending on the application. Use metholated spirits or any form of strong alcohol for working with silicone of sika flex. Dip your finger in alcohol and silicones etc wont stick to you so you can get a super tidy finish Its probably excessive on a personal car but we used to run dual 240 and 12v set ups in certain emergency vehicles, mostly vehicles that had lots of communications equipment in them. This was done through a Marechal power point installed on the exterior of the vehicle that had a contact that you run through the ignition so the vehicle couldn't when it was plugged in to 240v . For any powered site camping whilst in more urban parts of Australia I've always thought it would be cool to be able to plug in, charge all the batteries plus run everything off of main power rather than the inverter. Admittedly ive never seen anyone go that crazy on a touring rig, maybe ill be the first haha
Thanks for the advice in your vids 👍 Just finished up a basic itechworld dual batt install with dcdc, isolator on both the crank and aux batteries.
Hi mate i just wanna ask if this will void your warranty if you do it by yourself anyway its a great video
That point is always up for debate! Not on the Stedi lights, however as for Toyota, unless there is an electrical problem associated with the work you do it would be hard to argue!
Do you need to lock the rear locker when in 4wd
No. Only lock the rear when you need it - on very uneven ground/pot holes where you might lose traction on just one wheel
Thanks we are going to Moreton island which is sand so I won’t lock to start with
Don't use the rear lock on sand, you must switch off the traction control fully & let your tyres down! Centre diff lock maybe.
You made the wiring confusing by not going with the step by step install.
Are you sure about the SB12 not being able to be used, I asked iTechWorld and they advised could be used with their lithium under bonnet.
Yes apologies you can use it, you just have to remember the cut off voltages are turn on 13.2V, turn off 12.7V, depends how you want to connect as lithium at 12.7V will be at 15%. I've actually gone back to a manual process, less things to worry about!
Overcome that 'huge' 1sec turbo lag from stationary by putting your left foot on the brake and load up the torque converter with your right foot. It'll take off like a scolded cat. Alternatively, don't pull out in front of people. Wait a few seconds for a bigger gap!
Got around to getting this battery, kaon bracket for a charger etc. To run your wires from the aux battery to your boot - did you go along the chassis rails and up through the boot, or grommets in the firewall and along the interior? Any tips greatly appreciated :)
I went through the firewall then along the side, I would have gone one size bigger just for future proofing. Centre pillar was very hard to get behind, feed something else through first then draw your wire!
@@chrisp10022 One size bigger on the wiring or battery? Looks like the 120x battery I bought was the older model (330mm), still looks to fit in the aux battery area under the bonnet? Tight squeeze but fits. Any issues you could foresee with the slightly bigger battery?
@andrewcaldwell2275 One size bigger would be for the cable running from the battery to the back of the vehicle. I looked at the 120X and thought it should fit, then they introduced the smaller N70 size one. The 120X might be a bit tight, not sure how much room once you wrap it in heat protector. Don't see any issues once wrapped if not rubbing against anything.
This is perfect! thank you for making this, i am just about to order some for our Prado we just got. In the 2nd row do they come separate so you can do the fold to access the 3rd row of seating? Trying to decide if we just want black stitching, is this the standard silver that comes with it?
@louiseo5930 Yes the second row does come in two pieces so that the seats can fold and move as normal. I seem to remember you can choose your stitching colour, but check their web site as it's been a while since I purchased them!
So after a year how are they holding up? I feel they may get scuffed up and scratched alot by the look of the material
I'm very happy with them, easy to clean, I usually just brush them off with the very occasional wash needed. They spend most of the time dirty, I've not noticed anything particular with the material, even after washing they still look fine.
Thank you for your great review of the Stedi lantern. Much appreciated.
Hi mate, how's the battery going now? Would you do the same again? Cheers
@jack3d275 it's going well so far, great to have the extra capacity, we went away for three nights recently & I did not even take my solar with me. Yes I'd definitely do it again.
Great vid and knowledge, thank you. Looks to be the go-to resource for Prado 150 mods. If you were to do it all from scratch, would still use the BCDC (or DCDC) to charge the lithium, and have the manual isolator?
@andrewcaldwell2275 Thanks for your feedback, and great question. I'm not totally convinced in the vale of a BCDC, if I was trying to save money then no I would use the alternator whilst driving & solar with regulator to charge, Either way the manual isolator is a must, I've just returned from a trip and it really does help protect drain from the starter battery, I'm actually going do some testing and maybe another video on this subject. I certainly would not use a voltage sensing isolator again, which I put in for charge back, and need to remove some relays I put in to try and automate the starter battery isolation! Next time - keep it simple!
Bcdc is essential for lithium as it requires a different charge profile to the standard starter battery along with different voltages etc Also a bcdc acts like a smart isolator so having a bcdc and a red arc isolator is a bit overkill
How many kms have u done with the BFG tyres so far..
As of June 2024 - 32,000km, one had very uneven wear so had to use spare, may only get another 10K from them... had hoped for more!
This guy please explain as you go 😂
Thank you
Just bought a demo GXL. This is my first Toyota and wasn't my first choice when I started looking for a new car, but after a test drive, I kind of get why they're so popular. My fuel economy is very good at 10.1/100 for all my driving so far, though I don't drive around town much. IMHO, that is good for a 4x4 with a bull bar and 32" AT tires. Thanks for the video.
100% you are correct with the rear differential lock.
Awesome! Such a clever idea to make the table flush like that. The best home made Prado rear door table design I've seen. Sir you have inspired me!
A very informative video. Thank you for posting this!
Sweet vid mate👌🏻👌🏻
Nice. How many mm steel are those brackets bolted to the roof?
You don't need to switch off traction control to get the diff locks engaged, but obviously 4 low is required. It's the disengaging again after a river crossing, for instance, that can be a little frustrating. I've found that after stopping and putting the trans in neutral and releasing the 4 low and diff locks the Prado can remain in that configuration for a short distance before it goes back to normal highway settings, basically when it feels like it. I'm talking 2019 j150.
Simply brilliant, mate. Done the same with equivalent products from Bunnings too. Thanks so much for sharing
I like how the stitching stands out. So this is black Neoprene with grey stitching?
Yes it is
You need a fuel jiggler but use it for water instead 😉
Great video - answered all questions and provided good examples. This allows me to mount a root top antenna with minimal effect on the vehicle. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
You are absolutely correct, mate, to engaging the rear diff lock.
Hello, I'm woundering if you can please give me a little more info? Do they smell? As in does the car smell like a wet-suit on a hot day?
There was a 'new' smell for the first few months, but not any more. I've had them now for more than 2 & half years, just washed them for the first time and they are like new again.
Thanks for the help @@chrisp10022
This is great. I've been looking at doing something like this on my flat mesh platform. Only thing I might add is a thick piece of rubber on the bottom to absorb any vibration between the steel and so it doesn't rip my powder coating off.
Good point, actually because the fixing is so tight it does not move and has not rubbed the rack in my case, but I like the idea, thanks.
Did the same with my gas bottle, only thing different was pinchweld on the base ring. Works a treat, and grippy.
Kaon also makes a half table - but I very much like you less intrusion ( into potential drawer space) and your string adjustment tab is probably easier than kaon’s if one need to adjust on the fly to get a horizontal surface
Mate the Khon base panel takes ages to screw what kind of tools did you use?
I used a small socket set on the lock nuts they provide
Hey! can you help me understand how to connect the T piece from the pump up kit? I got lost and you skipped that part
Of course, pause the video at 1:40, you can see the pressure switch is fitted facing to the right in this case, fit the air hose connector to the top, once those are both in tight, fit the T piece into the pump. Use gas PTFE tape (yellow) on the thread, wrap in the thread direction so when screwing in you go with the wrapping direction, wrap around about 3 - 4 times. When you screw together, turn so that it is tight, but do not try to screw it all the way in just enough so it is firm., metal to metal you can use grips but screwing into the pump do it by hand until it is firm & in the right direction. Hope this helps
Excellent video
Many thanks for your comment 😁
Thank you! Can you add a link for the wiring video please?
Here you go ruclips.net/video/RJ90vdyOOc0/видео.html
I Di the same thing a few years ago, best mod I’ve done, use it every week
Great to hear, thanks for sharing. I used it last weekend for the first time & it was great.
Nice . I'm going to do something similar.
Nice work. I like how you have retained some space with this table to the left side. I have a sliding draw and the space will allow my draw to still open with the table down. Ill give that a crack. Cheers and thanks.
Looks ok and cheaper than a KAON table
Am I correct to think you haven’t used a battery tray? What bracket did you use to hold the battery down?
@RallyeX coret, I did not use a battery tray as the mounting is now the same as the starter battery. I therefore went for the Toyota fixing bracket so now it is identical to the starter battery fitting. I did however add a thin rubber sheet to the bottom of the new battery to help it sit tight. The Toyota bracket does not come as a kit so you have to get all the parts individually but their spares team can help with that.
Looks like a good sensible set of mods
Thanks for your thoughts. We took delivery of a VX this year, and we like the lack of tech like auto engine off when stopping at lights etc. The inbuilt GPS was no good, could not find addresses in ACT so we now have a third party GPS, no interest in car play options. We have the blind spot monitoring, but as you say not necessary with the Prado mirrors, and not bright enoungh to see in strong light anyway. As for the drive chain don't really like the way it changes down two gears when it starts to engine brake going down hill, as you still have to brake to avoid going over the speed limit etc. But other than that it is smooth in the gears etc. Acceleration is slow but apart from overtaking dont mind that. Having leather seats made it necessary to get covers. One thing we are looking for are mud guards for the front of the rear wheels as they shovel mud onto the running board steps. Real pain. But so far cant find anything specific. Since the VX comes with 19" wheels no good tyres available. Asked Toyota if the STD 17" rims still fit as there was a change to the brake calipers in our model. They just said we think they still fit but have not swapped any in 2023 models yet. We purchased ours for a tourer, with no serious off road stuff planned and it good good for what we purchased it for.
Great review mate, I have the full sided rack fitted to my 200 series. I'm going to cut it down to make the flat rack like yours. Seems a lot more practical having it flat than with the side rails. Then I'll be able to fit a roof top tent down the track. Anyway thanks for the excellent info. cheers
Thanks. Just the very thing I’ve been looking for low amperage. You’ve sold me on this one.
Thx for sharing. Some great info especially showing us the access to the wiring behind the dashboard ( I own a 2019 GX Prado). Slightly off topic, is there wiring in there to tap into for a UHF radio power ? Also off topic, how is the Itech lithium battery under the bonnet going and also the OME suspension ? I am having an OME 2” suspension lift put into the car next week so hoping I have made a good choice ! Trust you had a great Xmas Cheers
Thanks for your feedback, the best place for the UHF power is to use a fuse tap into the fuse box just above the accelerator pedal as you will need to include a fuse in the UHF supply, (the fuse box cover does not fit back once you use a tap). You can get fuse taps on ebay. You'll need to decide if you want switched power. I took mine back to the aux battery, although I have to say I hardly use it when the car is off. As for the battery, it has been fine so far however I'm off on a trip this weekend so will give it a good work out! The suspension has been good, I might go for air bags in the distant future just so I can adjust the ride as and when required, a cost I could not afford when I did it, but no real reason to change! Suspension is a difficult one as we know what we like but you cannot try before you buy!
@@chrisp10022 Hi. Thx for reply and info on the UHF power supply and suspension. My 2nd battery is a deep cycle lead acid, so have been trying to keep tabs on how the iTech lithiums perform for when I need to replace it. Agree with the suspension especially in relation to spring rates. Everyone’s (including the manufacturers) perception on what is firm, hard, soft etc is different. Like you I have found the standard Prado suspension to soft so have gone for 200kg springs in the rear. I know it will feel firm, But hopefully the car won’t ride like a stage coach ! Cheers
@4bnewb969 Update on the iTech battery after a short trip. I ran a Bushman 52 L as fridge & Bushman 15 L Roadie as freezer (-18) and with some lights as well over New Years. I reached around 50% capacity used (50AH) which with my AGM would have been at the end of its use. It was cloudy one day so I was glad to have the extra capacity so I did not stress about limited solar charging! This was the main reason I changed to the Lithium as I just needed more capacity (for the kids to have ice treats!) and wanted to save weight. I'll be interested to see how far I can push it and how the capacity changes over time, but at the moment it's working as I had expected.
@@chrisp10022 Hi Thx for update. Despite lithium batteries getting cheaper (relatively) in recent times, they are still a fair $ commitment so good to hear the battery is performing as expected - so far ! Cheers
Thanks for sharing i’m doing same😊
