How important is the quality of the socket with these situations? Do you think a harbor freight , Kobalt or craftsman’s kit would be able to get these out? There’s so many tool reviews on RUclips but all they do is show the ratchet and talk about the teeth. They dont actually try to break rusted bolts

I don’t work on large engines of any kind (small engine mechanic here), but it’s nice to see some heavy duty equipment like the 12-18-24 V charger you reviewed, knowing they’re still made, and made in the USA. Buy once, cry once! Work smart, not hard!

Great for a shop; for a non-mechanic go to Wal-Mart every five yrs & buy their best battery, right now approx $139, & you'll never be stranded. Batteries are consumables, like tires & brakes, they will need replaced over time😁 Ed c

I am an old mechanic and you just gave some real good advice in this video. One more thing you can do is shock the bolt. Drill a small indent in the bolt head. Ha! Back in the 60s & 70s there was plenty of room to do this. Put a center punch or better yet a pointed chisel in your air hammer and slam some heavy vibes into that sleepy bolt. This crushes the rust flakes to dust. Then do all of the steps you brought up. Once you loosen up two or three the rest will see the futility of resistance and give up real easy. Keep up the good work my young friend. Art from Ohio

A method I use is lubrication, tighten first, tap on manifold bolt flange with hammer spray again. Loosen a littler tap on bold head with hammer work back & forth, keep lubricating and tighten loosen until broke free. Unfortunately cleared this the hard way after many broke bolts. Also as you gain experience you will get a feel if a bolt is stuck and know when to stop.

not to be a karen but don't you have to evacuate the a/c system? I'm a diesel mechanic but mostly work on busses never worked on heavy equipment. but what a pain in the ass to remove the a/c compressor to do a starter job. Is it pretty common in the field to remove the a/c line and let it out because it would be such a pain to take it to a shop to get a starter done when it can be done in field

Here is another trick. Once your realize the bolts are stuck, heat the bolt heads to about 450-500 degrees and then let them completely cool. This will cause the bolt to expand and crush the rust holding them in place. As the bolts cool, you will be left with a few thousands clearance between the bolts and the rust... hopefully. Once they cool completely, you can heat the housing to gain another few thousands. They should come right out then.

A little trick I used as a Heavy Duty Mechanic and as a high school Automotives Teacher was, I would take a flat punch slightly smaller in diameter to the bolt head (so as to not damage the bolt head) and carefully with a heavy hammer strike the bolt head in line with the shaft of the bolt - usually 2-3 strikes then proceed with the heat and the loosen tighten methods. Rarely did this not get positive results. The sudden jarring seemed to break the corrosion loose and allow easier removal.

Sir, your vid was awesome, it's exactly how i was taught to do it. Patience. Lots of oil.before and during. Re tighten all bolts. Use new bolts for reassembly. esp exhaust bolts. Slow is fast. Only thing i might add, other people already have too, is sometimes a medium tap on bolt heads can sometimes help. Edit ive also used a hand held impact driver on many occasions and it was one of my favorite tools, idk what you think about them. Thanks very much its always good to do a refresher course 👍

...and 90% of problems with fasteners, could be avoided by 50¢ worth of anti-seize compound, as OP points out at the very end. But 99% of mechanics can't be bothered to use it. I used to work in a large government fleet and I never saw ANY of the mechanics apply anti-seize to anything. I'm always baffled why even a mechanic who of all people ought to know better, won't spend 10 seconds to brush on the anti-seize even when its something on their own cars!
