We're Ritch & SJ (Sarah-Jane to give me my Sunday name!)
So what's our channel all about?
A bit of this and a bit of that we'd say! We live a simple life in the British countryside that we love sharing with our viewers. You can see what we get up to in the quest to sort out our plot of land, it's always an adventure!
Along the way we'll go on the odd road trip and take you along for the ride. We're a creative duo so there will be a few makes thrown in there for good measure, be it food, crafts, clothing or some sort of construction; and if we buy anything for our home or garden we'll review it so you have an unbiased view.

Restoring a Mid-Century Modern magazine trolley
SJ flies solo on this one. Refinishing a recent purchase from a local auction.
This Danish made mid-century magazine trolley needed a little refreshing to bring it back to its former glory. To begin, I carefully examined the trolley for any damage, taking note of scratches and worn areas that needed attention. After cleaning it thoroughly to remove any dust and grime, I decided on a suitable wood finish that would revive its natural beauty. I lightly sanded the surfaces to create a smooth base for the new finish. It was essential to work in the direction of the grain to prevent any additional damage. I have done the same to an identical chest of drawers which was also put out on the street to take away! I had to replace the top plywood, which had been damaged by water and also had something heavy dropped on it, but thanks to B and Q cutting sheets of plywood to measure if you need, that was very easily done. An interesting thing was one of the drawer bottoms was a bit short and didn't reach its slot in the side timber - maybe in wartime it was use that or nothing? I didn't replace it, but put in an extra baton to support the end firmly. I felt it was a little bit of wartime history.
Great craftsmanship. You have special skills to craft that tile at the bottom. I enjoyed the video.

Oven is great, the pizza is ok :D
Great build and effort. Your biggest mistake is not adding floor insulation. Your oven floor will cool down very quickly while cooking your pizza. I made the same mistake while building mine and I had to add insulation to the floor after finishing my oven.
Thanks for the feedback. The bricks on the base are actually fire bricks, so do provide some insulation. We actually built this a while back and have been using it for a few years now, with no problems. If anything it probably gets too hot. Curious though, how did you add the insulation afterwards?

One note: If you put a metal rod rebar into the place where high temperature will be, it's gonna expand due to thermal expansion of metal and crack the concrete. I wouldn't recommend that.
Thanks for the advice but, if you watch the next video you’ll see there is a layer of fire bricks above the concrete. It’s not cracked in three years!

How did this turn out?
It was okay, it did work, although felt strange as there was no bubbles. It was a lot of effort for the amount produced. Certainly not time efficient. But a good exercise to see if it could be done.

@RichardandSJ - I'm refinishing my Granfathers 100+ yo oak rolltop - Question, do I use a "ROTARY" sander on the oak panels? If so, how do I prevent circular scratches? I'm using a belt sander on the large surfaces and that seems to work great. The difficulty I have is on smaller panels where the belt sander is too large. I appreciate any advice you have! GREAT VIDEO!
Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes you could use a random orbital sander, but keep the pressure light to prevent the scratches, and work up your grits. Scrappers are a good alternative to remove old finishes. You can sand by hand, just make sure you’re following the grain. Don’t forget to leave some the marks and scratches, it’s not necessary to make to factory fresh, as it’s a piece of your family’s history. Good luck Ritch.

What product did you use on the wood ?
If I remember correctly, it was a hard wax oil by Treatex and a Fiddles polishing wax.

Did you use a stripper on the apron the rolltop part of the rolltop desk?
Yes you can use the paint stripper, but be careful not to damage the webbing behind the slats.

Remember that the birds need to be able to get up to the exit hole, or they will be trapped. Don't assume that they can fly or jump up to the hole.

I wonder if the wind will blow the shoe tounge over the opening. Why not tie the laces on both sides of the toungue to prevent this?

It cleans dishes & cuts through grease but as it doesn’t create suds I felt I had to add more to the water than conventional washing up liquid.

I just bought an antique oak roll-top desk almost identical to this one. Paid $300 for it and it is pretty worn out but very repairable. this sucker is heavy as H*** :) Very excited to get on with this project. I wanted to give it an updated look, but I'm noticing that even the brand new ones are typically stained, not painted.
