AIR CANADA Trans-Pacific Flight Review in 2023 | 787-8 | HND - YYZ
Great review. I just got back from Japan and was blown away by their transit and regional train operations. I dont believe I interacted with 1 person from the time I purchased my ticket to the time I got to my destination. The train attendant on the bullet train stoped to pas out a hot towel but that was it! The whole process is so seamless, it’s all automated!I I agree, the VIA rail boarding process is very airline like. Not sure why automatic gates that scan QR codes aren’t installed at the entrance of the concourse and then passengers just board when the train are indicating boarding. The entire process seems very inefficient and costly. I still don’t get why people que when there are assigned seats. I guess VIA’s process lack of seating in the concourse and habit may be reasons. Cant wait to try the new trains.
The title is wrong it’s NRT not HNd
so are they replacing ALL trains? or some of the dated ones still gonna be in service?
Not the plane I had. Mine had premium economy.
I was going to post a very nasty comment concerning the entitled whining of Ontarians, but I'll leave it at this. Maybe it is time to restart the Western Canada concept and stop the Transfer Payments?
Glad you're leaving it at that. Have spent many years in Sask & Alberta myself. We're all in this together. Let's start by fixing Ottawa next year 🗳️
Nice, how much.
There are several price points for the train, so it depends what you are after. The video has a breakdown of the price towards the end.
There's no chance you can stream using VIA's Wi-Fi!,
I was with yt. I didn't stream full hd, so lower quality is possible at least.
Welcome to Singapore 🇸🇬
Can't wait to go back!
Hey! great video but wanted to clarify - Signature Suite = the exclusive lounge in YVR/YYZ, whereas I think you're referring to their Business class product marketed as "Signature Class."
You're absolutely correct. Small oversight on my part 🤣
Nihan ❤🎉
I love the smile on your face when you taste that Canadian beer for the first time in two years, it captures so many emotions that many people I’m sure can empathize with. Great video!
It was a long 2 years of following the science! What happened to that science anyway 🤣
swoop retired😢
We are only left with Flair as an LCC 😭
How about some complimentary THC gummies for those who dont drink lol
We're getting closer, but not there yet=\. Would like to see a couple Spinach options one day! Until then it's a byog 🍬
Air Canada is not interested in customer satisfaction...they are interested in the bottom line, and they do not see a link between the two. I always fly Air Canada when it is convenient. It has never been convenient and I have been flying for over 50 years.
Are they the best company? No. Are they the worst? No. I've flown them for a long time and have rarely had issues with them. The best part about being a consumer is that we can choose the airline we wish to fly! Happy travels ✈️
Why would you speed up and mute the sound through takeoff roll? Rookie mistake?
My analytics indicated to keep it short. I know, I know, I love the roll as much as any avgeek! I do include full takeoffs on important flights, such as Asiana's last 747!
Never been on a MAX and have no intention of doing so.
Don't drive on a highway then
It's great. Comfortable, spacious, efficient. I'm more worried about driving on the 401.
Was it full?
Pretty full, but not 100%
great vid! AC is such a bush league airline
I always get confused. Is it bush league or busch league?
HaHa!! I agree, turkey bacon is not bacon! I get why they use it, a lot of people don't eat or like pork.
Agreed. They should make another option of not 🥓 instead of using turkey bacon.
I guess I won't be flying Air Canada any time, after seeing the prices on that menu. Meals are not free anymore?
Meals haven't been free for like 25 years on domestic flights. They are still meals on overseas flights. You can always bring your own too.
@@theglobalpeasant wow, thanks for the heads up.
I like that they have turkey bacon on breakfast items . Lots of people don't eat pork or can stand the smell of it in an enclosed area . The yyz airport terminal 1 Starbucks makes sense as the airport has a Goodlife Fitness Club , a Full CIBC branch and the Nexus enrollment center, not everyone is going to fly, I think it's open 24-7 as lots of people overnight at the airport
Yes like any food item, it will gravitate more towards some. I think sausage or even chicken sausage would be a better alternative if they choose not to use real 🥓. There is also a 711 and pharmacy too!
@theglobalpeasant I know of the 7 eleven across from the Tim Hortons at domestic arrivals on T1, never know it had a pharmacy at the airport. I am originally from Toronto.
I like reviews without the lounge to see what the airport experience is like for normal travelers like the majority who may not have lounge access :D I'm about 20 credits off Air NZ Airpoints silver but that doesn't give many perks
I think having a balance of lounges and not is a good approach, since many lounges differ...plus it's a fun treat sometimes! Looks like you get a couple lounge passes with ANZ silver! I'd say go for it!
@@theglobalpeasant Unfortunately those passes only work in Air NZ lounges and not partner lounges I only fly back from Asia for my work every month and not out of NZ, I can use the domestic lounge but I don't think it's worth it. Also one recognition upgrade :) Do you think a priority pass is worth it for Asian airports? I usually fly out of Shanghai and Hong Kong
The speed restriction on them aren’t great but I’m not in a rush when I travel and I’ll take the late travel credits
That's a great way to look at it!
I used to take the Red Arrow back in the early 1980s. For the first few months after their start-up in '79, they actually had the equivalent of a flight attendant on board to serve you drinks/snacks. That was soon discontinued due to the added expense, but it was definitely a novel idea for the "grand opening" of their motorcoach service.
Wow! that's way before my time! Musta been a cool experience back then! But funny you mention that, I follow a RUclipsr from Chile and sometimes I see attendants on the double deckers down there!
@theglobalpeasant yes, I just saw a You tube video of Red Arrow now operating a new service in Ontario. Apparently they are doing the attendant thing there. I am sure it is going to be temporary as a way to lure a regular clientele. It's popular with business commuters. I can't see that service lasting long though. Back to self-serve eventually am sure. Your video review was well done. Thanks for posting!
A lot of dumb a$$es have called it the "train of the future" 😂😂😂😂. People who work at the via rail are monkey jumping. Clearly they have not seen the japanese shinkansen.
95% of the new train sets are on the Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec City corridor. There is only one or two trips per week Toronto-Montreal even though there is more volume on this route. Maybe it is because a 4 or 5 car set is not enough for the amount of customers. This is a new train set, you should have given first class a shot. I am surprised an Ottawa bound train didn't stop at Brockville.
Hmm I thought there was more than that on Toronto-Montreal ...the website had the routes of the new trains. As I mentioned in the video, I wasn't too pleased with Via last year in business, so I'm giving them a year extra to "sharpen the pencils"... I'll try business next summer!
@@theglobalpeasant Yes, the website has the routes but they are not scheduled on those routes regularly.
When you say that a government monopoly on rail services is not a good idea you clearly haven't had a look at the privatised shitshow that is the UK free market rail compared with continental government-run monopolies on continental Europe.
We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I experience the privatised non-shitshow in Japan and it works great. Gov't shouldn't own airlines, nor rail lines and I stand by that.
Let's be careful here with rhetoric. Railways are different from airways because there's one track and they transfer from state-run to private-run monopolies. I disagree with your ideological position on airlines. For example, the world's number one airline, which owns a huge chunk of British airways, is state-owned Qatar Airlines.
The new trains look very nice, and that part where the train travels along the coast looks great. Nice experience, it's always good to be able to see things about Canada too. Greetings and have a good weekend, blessings!
Yup! It's always nice to enjoy Canada during the summer!
Here's the problem. Four flight fares: Basic, Standard, Flexible, Freedom. No electronic boarding pass for the Basic fare and mandatory face to face counter agent check in resulting in massive lines. Total deal breaker. Absolutely idiotic business decision by Porter. No other airline is stupid enough to load their check-in area with self-check terminals that cannot be used. What kind of moron makes the decision to force their check in agents to deal with customers unnecessarily?
I hear your frustration. I've said that basic fare is purely a ploy for airlines to advertise cheap (but not practical) tickets..but not much good besides that.
We had the pleasure of taking a trip on one a few weeks back. The seats were comfortable, and it was a smooth ride. Unfortunately, we had the displeasure of listening to a 20something mom of and ignoring a non-verbal special needs child of maybe 6 or 7, while in a sobbing, sometimes screaming conversation with her boyfriend, then looking for sympathy, a friend, then back to her boyfriend for 90 minutes, by Belleville, where she'd made up with boyfriend, got off, and was going to wait to get picked up. Yes, staff intervened about an hour in as she and the child were becoming increasingly annoying to all the car's passengers, about a 10 minute reprieve. We happened to be right behind her. I felt bad that she was in whatever situation it was, but she had no filter, respect for others around her, or the ability to keep her drama to herself.
This is unfortunate experience. I would have probably moved, if possible, but it sounds like you handled it well.
like
I flew them for the first time when I went to Vancouver it was a packed flight when I took them, I can see why it’s a popular airline, but it’s the best 10/10, free wifi and snacks, I wouldn’t say it’s a low budget airline like flair, I would say it’s somewhat of a medium budget airline similar to westjet, but it’s great to see them expand flights out to LA and Vegas, I feel has to though in about say give them about 2 or 3 years and who knows it could go to tropical places like Mexico, Cuba, Dominican, etc
Ya, they're definitely not like Flair! But I like how they do things different. They are already are planning to Mexico. I always enjoy them and another options for us consumers.
Avoid the Q400 at all cost; Noisy, Cramp, bumpy. It's one of the worst plane to fly.
Unfortunately, on some routes it's the only option. Crampness aside, I think it flies pretty smooth.
I flew Porter (and this particular aircraft) from Boston to Toronto. It was a night time flight and my seat was directly across from the prop engine. It was so loud I couldn't hear the music in my headphones. I will say the flight crew was very friendly and Customs at the Island Airport was relatively painless.
Ya, I've done that more than a few times, so I always avoid those rows when possible!
The approach into YQT is probably the best in the country
It's definitely up there on the list!
Interesting how you got a Toronto beer in Ottawa and an Ottawa beer in Toronto lol!
Curr on train 45. Equipment was substituted and I swear this car has one square wheel! Just announced that the wifi is fixed but there’s still no signal
I flew Porter myself last spring, but it was from my hometown of Thunder Bay (YQT) to Ottawa (YOW). I used Porter to get back home, but it was from Toronto-City (YTZ). It ended up like this because I had taken a Via Rail train from Ottawa to Toronto on the same trip. In any case, ever since Porter has been flying to and from Thunder Bay, they've done pretty well.
Ya, I flew them many times to Thunder Bay. They offer the best schedule currently. That direct flight to Ottawa is also very beneficial. I think soon they'll offer flights to YYZ which will also be a big boost!
@theglobalpeasant I think they are flying to YYZ from YQT now.🙂
It was supposed to start a week ago with the E2, but they quietly changed the first flight to December 10th.
@@charlesprouse6915 Ya I couldn't find that direct flight from YYZ when I looked the other week for a flight in late December.
US pre clearance is coming to Billy Bishop in 2025. Love flying Porter!
I heard whispers of this. Has it actually been confirmed or is it some plan that may be delayed by x number of years?
@@theglobalpeasant There's been a lot more than whispers. There was an announcement from several levels of government in May of 2024. On Sept 27, 2024 there was an update presentation from both the US and Canadian governments including Anita Anand (federal transport minister), David Cohen (U.S. ambassador to Canada), RJ Steenstra (president and CEO of PortsToronto), Neil Pakey (president and CEO of Nieuport Aviation), Sandra Pupatello (chair of PortsToronto), and Robert Silvers (under secretary for policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security) with further updates and confirming the 2025 date.
Unsure why the YT algorithm suggested the video. However I appreciated it and subscribed to the channel. Looking forward to future ones 😀
Welcome aboard! Glad you found the channel! Enjoy!
The problem is canada decided to contract a passenger monopoly to a freight company who placed the passenger traffic on the freight rails and put it at a lower priority because they don't make money on it.
Sad, there are some many things wrong with this. Passenger rail service can be profitable for all parties if done right. Unfortunately, we're not there yet. Even though I paid $100, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a gov't subsidized price.
The rails are privately owned and the companies have the right to prioritise traffic as they like, freight being the most profitable. Im sure VIA/governement have an agreement with CP/CN to 'allow' passenger traffic, but probably not incentivised to bump it up the routing priority. The amount of investment required to build a dedicated passenger corridor is enormous and even then unlikely to attract business travellers - those that subsidise the rest of us - away from the airlines, despite their own appalling performance ratings.
@mrenshaw your are right and they should be able to prioritize profitable traffic, but there was no reason the government couldn't have ordered a passenger only rail parallel to the freight which they owned and they didn't.
Except the cost and the public's lack of appetite for tax rises and another white elephant of an infrastructure project. We have enough for a herd in Ontario, some members of which were originally mammoths, they've taken (taking/will take) so long.
When Porter first started they had a lounge for all their passengers with free dinks and snacks. They have since changed it though.
I remember this, but completely escaped my mind until you mentioned this! It was a great lounge indeed!
Dinks ?😊
Nice to see local video 👍👋
I always look forward to visiting the Ottawa area!
Thanks for dropping by! I forgot to include the new direct flights from Ottawa (in 2024) in the video... so here they are! Calgary (Feb 14 ~) Winnipeg (May 16 ~) St. John's (June 6 ~) Las Vegas (Nov 1~) Fort Myers (Nov 28~)
Thanks for the simple video! I feel like for an hour-long train ride, especially if you have some luggage, the extra $4ish is completely worth it to have all that space and not worry about overcrowding. I'm definitely getting these seats when I visit soon, I'm glad I did a little more research and stumbled upon this. Thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed this. Ya, I think this train kinda falls between the cracks when visitors search for Osaka-Kyoto trains. It's a good find! Enjoy your trip!
How do you like the trip by the way if you want the same leg room as Japan Airlines but 3-3-3 like AC B787s then fly NH. My parents did it 6 months ago and liked it although they were about to replace it with PR113 LAX-MNL due to UA delaying their EWR-LAX flight.
Both options would be good I think!
do you remember who the first officer was, because my dad is a pilot who flies on that route.
oh, I wouldn't remember the names unfortunately. But's that's a sweet gig of your old man!
Hi is the bus ticket machine accept cash ? Thanks
Ya it should. If you have a transit card, it should work too on the bus.
we don't care 60% of us: canadians outside the Quebec city Winsor will never be reached by any of that stuff. Thanks god we have gas guzzling automobiles
Not 'never' but ' not anymore'. Reasonable service was provided in the 1800 & 1900's! How can you pay your fair share of the carbon tax if you don't have a gas guzzling automobile? 🤣
@@theglobalpeasant every time at fill at he pump roughly $100/week= $5,200/year. That is a lot of carbon tax.
@@theglobalpeasant unfortunately the gas guzzling truck (compulsory for winter driving) is my only transportation option since greyhound folded out and trains are long gone (another Mulroney's gift) Last week westjet also announced they were pulling out of prairies next month. so I pay my share of carbon tax since I burn around 6,000 liters/year (15 barrel) and spend hundreds hours of driving
