Matthew Allton Art
Великобритания
Добавлен 11 июн 2023
I'm a largely self taught artist living in Coventry in the UK. This channel will showcase paintings, drawings and sketches. It will hopefully feature demonstrations of how artworks are created and will document experimentation with different media and different subject matter over time. Maybe it will document an overall improvement in ability over time!? I work in a variety of media, from pencil and charcoal for sketching, through to painting with watercolour, gouache and oil paints. Main subject interests include life drawing, still life and landscapes.
Portrait Sketching Practice Stephen Fry
This is a timelapse video of me drawing a portrait sketch of Stephen Fry in my small Moleskin Sketchbook and talking through my process. It took about 75 minutes to complete.

Painting a Commission - Robin in Gouache Paints
Просмотров 6814 дней назад
This video shows me painting my first real commission painting of a Robin in gouache paints. Doing commissions is something that I've historically shied away from, but because of the amount of work I have done in the last year and a half I've become confident enough to try to paint anything. I also had free reign to pick the image that I wanted to use myself which always helps. I'm an Amazon As...

Hello Matthew, how are you? Tomorrow I have one of your paintings in my video. I hope you like it. Greetings Ron.
Ah great...thanks Ron...always nice to see my work getting out there:)
Love it, Matthew, one of my favourites this year. Looking forward to seeing your work in 2025.
Hopefully there will be as much in 2025 as there has been in 2024...over 260 pieces this year!!! Not bad with having a full time day job as well!!!
Lovely!
Thanks:)
Merry Christmas Matthew, thank you for sharing your art with us this year. Looking forward to seeing new art in 2025 😊
Thanks a lot for your support!
Beautiful watching you making artwork 🖌️💙
Thanks as ever Fabry. Hope you are well?
Really enjoyed seeing you sketch with the finished work next to it. Keep up with the good work you're showcasing.
Thanks:) it's been a while since I've done a long format video but there will be more over the coming weeks:)
This is really helpful <3
Thanks...although I don't tell people what to do as such in my videos, as I don't feel qualified to do so in reality, I hope that by people seeing how I approach things they might be able to try it themselves. There are quite a few life drawing videos on my channel as it's a subject that has always fascinated me
Love the different way you have presented this
Thank you Dawn. Trying a different approach to try to grow the channel for a short while
That one friend who tells others they can’t draw Amazing art though!
Not sure what you mean in the first bit? But thanks for commenting
Love it 😀
Thanks:)
So beautiful watching you creating art.... thank you so much
Thanks for the inspiration Fabry
Hai Matthew, from the 7 days I like the drawing of day 6 the most. And? did you like the challenge? Greetings Ron.
Hi Ron...thanks for watching them all. I like the old lady best out of all of them...that one really speaks to me. I also like day 1 as it was the best likeness possibly. I enjoyed the challenge so will be doing different challenges over coming months. I was thinking I might try a gouache painting sketch of figures for one of them...so might be dome stuff for you to feature in your videos from that one if I do it!?
Again, I love these sketches, Matthew. Well done on your challenges this week. I really enjoyed seeing the end results 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Lovely pieces! What details of the face do you find yourself spending the most time on? 🤔
I guess eyes really...I struggle with noses...but this week of portraits and drawing seven of them has begun to make me more observant of them. Mouths are very varied and difficult to get the curvature of them right.
Phenomenal sketches Matthew. Love the older lady, so much detail. As usual, thank you for sharing your talent with us.
Thank you very much
👏
Thanks Multichrons
So great talent ✍🏼
Thanks for following all my videos Fabrizio
Another great upload, really enjoy the way you talk us through your half-hour sketches. Do you get frustrated if you go over your half hour time?
I'm trying not to go over by too many minutes...to make each challenge a similar time...otherwise it's difficult to compare like with like to see any improvement etc.
Well done! I can get so little done in 30 minutes. I gotta try doing some faster practice.
I can really recommend these challenges...I used to be very slow, but after doing years of life drawing where warm up poses can be very short indeed I've sped up no end. I'm hoping these timed challenges will push me to the next level again with speed and accuracy. Let me know how you get on!
Beautiful 🖌️
Thanks Fabrizio
Such a great likeness, well done Matthew 👏
Let's hope they get better through the week of the challenge!? But not going to beat myself up if they don't.
I like this challenge. I'll try to watch everyday Matthew. Greetings Ron.
Thanks Ron. If this one goes well I might try a longer challenge next month. It's sometimes difficult to shoehorn art challenges into a busy life but the challenge helps you to prioritise it! Still watching your videos when you launch them, and thanks for featuring me a couple of times in the past.
So beautiful art🖌️💙✍🏼
Thanks so much Fabrizio... I'm learning all the time by practicing as much as I can...Practice makes Perfect so the saying goes. I hope it turns out to be true in my case! Are you an artist yourself?
Oh no I am just only a passionate lover of the arts and i follow your awesome artworks with interest and pleasure 💙🖌️
I love this!!! It honestly blows me away. Reminds me of the ducks in my bathroom which I still have ❤ miss you! x
Thanks Claire. Glad you still have the ducks...it'll be worth a fortune someday! Lol x
Absolute love this, Matthew, very calming scene. Love the way you talk us through how you created this piece of art. Well Done 👏
Thank you as ever.
Love this piece. Simple concept but beautifully presented
Thanks Dawn! I've not done loads of art so far on my 'art' holiday, but there is still time! Lol and if I don't anyway then I don't!
This has to be one of my favourite still life you've done of late. Very realistic, well done 👏
Thanks:) I'm currently painting a new still life of a tiny last of the season rose in a tiny vase. Not sure how well it's going so far, but will have to wait and see
I really like the painting, Matthew. You are a very talented artist 🎨
Thanks...some more videos coming over the next week or two, hopefully with slightly better results, but useful to see the good and the not so good for people I think.
@@MatthewAlltonArt Look forward to watching the videos.
Thank you for sharing your new sketches. I must admit I'm not a lover of feet, but well sketched. Look forward to seeing more sketches soon.
Me either, but you have to draw em if you are doing life drawing...most people have em after all!
Thank you for sharing, Matthew. Great sketch.
Thanks as ever...there is an oil painting still life video on the way this week...keep watching! :)
Well done 👏🏽👏🏽 3:14
Thanks very much:) do you do life drawing yourself?
@@MatthewAlltonArt yeah I drawing for myself 😊
Well done on your card sales, Matthew. As you say, hopefully, the next exhibition will be bigger sales 🤞
Ypu win some ypu lose some but it's all good experience!
Love the final painting, Matthew. It is very realistic and looks delicious 😋
Juicy black cherries...one of my favourite summer fruits...I had blue fingers from removing the stones when I ate them after taking the reference photo!
👏
Thank-you I'm pleased with the end result which is a rarity! But becoming a more common occurrence at least!
Thank you for sharing your process with us!
It's a process to be worked on and fine tuned as I'm not sure I have a process for painting portraits in oils yet...but with practice I'm hoping to develop one! Thanks for your support as ever!
Great work, Matthew. Now, onto your next experiment . What will that be ???
I dread to think what future challenges might be! Lol
Well done! Very lovely piece to loot at ;) . Maybe Cubism is your thing :P
Thanks...I dont think I'd go that far! But it was enjoyable enough. Look forward to seeing your piece for the challenge!
Nice to see you experimenting with success
Every piece is an experiment of some description lately...constantly trying new materials, techniques, subjects. Keeps it interesting
I really enjoyed the way you worked in the new medium you used. Well Done Matthew 👏
Thanks so much! 😊
Well done! Happy the new medium worked out.
Yes I have 11 more panels to practice on...looking forward to it!
Look forward to seeing your first piece of art using this medium Matthew.
Looking forward to full recovery from this awful cold so that I can do my first oil painting on wood!!
Best of luck with the new medium :P
Thanks Multichrons...looking forward to experimenting!
Love watching these videos Matthew
Thanks as ever Dawn:)
Amazing work, well done!
Thanks Multichrons...I enjoyed doing this one and another successful completion of a apatreon fortnightly art challenge! Yours is amazing too!
Very well described. Really helpful.
Thanks John.
Hi Matthew. I saw that you enjoyed going out with the tripod a few days after this. But I was wondering if there was some reason you are not using the strap to stand up with the Etchr? When you are sketching at least. I've seen other videos where people use the strap and lean the bag on their stomach to make a stable surface. I think the full sized one would have suited you better, with the extra space to set up a palette and cup. But you may be able to fit small ones in. A small metal palette with some magnet clips? Anyhow, you are inspiring me, so thanks so much for sharing and for being real about plein air. I feel self-conscious too, until I am in sketch zone, then I block everything 😀
Hi Jos-P Thanks for the comment! I have tried using the strap on the etchr slate minute as a trial and I found it was too close for me...my eyes. I'm rather rotund too so maybe that had something to do with the discomfort!? :) The tripod worked well last weekend, so looking forward to going out on my own with both...maybe this coming weekend...being on my own will allow me to take more time etc. I bought the small etchr slate because I wanted an alternative to my large pochade box type easel, which is far too cumbersome and heavy to walk anywhere with. I wanted something small and lightweight which wouldn't be too onerous to take with me on all the walks I do...my other main hobby.
Thanks so much for that, Matthew. I live in Australia, but am also looking looking to get out more to both paint and sketch. I am waiting for the arrival of my full sized slate, and bought a tripod. Seeing this has made me confident that it was a good decision. We get lots of rain, so I just loved the idea of the brolley. I hadn't thought of the shade it would cast. I loved your picture, looks like you had a wonderful day. Very inspiring 😀
Exciting waiting for new equipment....good luck and do comment on future videos and let me know how you get in with the larger etchr slate! The best of luck with it and happy sketching! I wish I could see the results of you learning, but alas you can't post pictures un comments on youtube...thats why I set up my patreon at the beginning of the year. The small group of us on there so far are having great fun inspiring each other and sharing our efforts! Think about joining! Would be great to have you on board!
Punch up the darks in a bit more in the shadows of the doorways and 'window' spaces etc and you'll get a more sunlit effect in the painting, other than that, looking good I think. Lovely place also, we're NT too but based in London.
Yes I realise its tonally flat...yesterday was all about trying out the tripod with the etchr slate mini rather than a great painting. The set up worked well. Whenever I'm either my partner I'm conscious not to be too long, so would never get a 'good' result from such a sitting....looking forward to going out on my own over the summer when I can relax and take time
Hi Matthew, yes, stand up to paint, it makes all the difference - I'd recommend a James Gurney fold out type easel on which you can mount your paper/pad/board and also will hold your palette - was a game changer for me (I use all watercolour tube paint along with white gouache). Also, I'm sure you'd benefit hugely from doing Nathan Fowkes' Landscape Sketching in Watercolor and Gouache course on Schoolism or get his book, amazing resources. See also Marco Bucci's plein air painting content on youtube. Don't give up though, plein air is tricky and you just need to persevere, I look at it like fishing, sometimes you catch something, sometimes you go home empty handed but you had a nice day out anyway.
Thanks Yan...just watched a couple of videos about making a James Gurney style easel. They certainly seem a lightweight option, and I may well make one at some point in the future. I think I may continue to use the etchr slate mini that I invested quite a bit into first, but attach it to a camera tripod like I did in my new video. It worked well yesterday when I tried it. I like the idea of magnets to hold stuff...I may explore this further. I will check out the suggested youtube videos. Thanks so much for your time in commenting.
Well done!
Was a much better experiment...even enjoyable...just got to improve the actual results now! That would have been easier if I'd been on my own...when you are out with someone who doesn't paint you always have the anxiety of needing to finish for their sake. It was handy having a cameraman today though! :)
