    The witches houses look amazing. So many nice pieces, you've been very busy. I noticed your top peep hole was open. Do you always fire with this open, is it because you don't have a vent. I've got a small cressE1814 and it has 2 peep holes and was told I should leave one open. I did my first ever glaze firing and top shelf did not reach the cone 5 program I chose. I'm now wondering 🤔 if this is because of the peep hole. As mid and bottom reached cone 5 with 6 starting to bend. I'm asking as you mentioned that your top shelf is cooler as well. Happy potting Ciao Evelyn

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 2 дня назад

      So I do have a vent... tiny holes drilled in the bottom, but was hesitant to compromise my top lid. I used to fire with that top peep open so that the vent would pull air from there. However, my top shelf was always colder than the others and more prone to flaws. I have since fired with all the peep holes covered, after it reaches 200 degrees. I leave the lid slightly cracked until 200 degrees to let the extra moisture escape. I vent the entire room to the outside now rather than the kiln during the firing process. Once it is done and cooling down, I remove the top peep and turn on the venting system to allow it to cool more quickly. If your kiln is newer and the elements are good, I would fire with the peep closed as long as you have allowed all the moisture to escape, as that can be hard on the elements.

      Some people definitely do. Etsy prefers when shop owners participate in their free shipping program. The shops that do offer free shipping will often be shown more often and rank higher in the algorithm. Etsy suggests you build shipping into your price, but it's very hard to do when shipping to Mass might be $6 and Cali might be $17 for the same item.

    I love this video, thanks for talking about Etsy! I've been selling on Etsy for 11yrs now. A few thoughts. 1 - One thing I refuse to do is do the "shipping included" thing. My buyers pay for shipping. I even add a very small fee for shipping materials. So that's a non-issue for me. If I were to include it in my price, then I'd have to raise all my prices as though I were mailing it across country, which isn't fair to the person who just lives a few hours away from me. 2 - Just a thought about people who sell at markets AND on-line. Don't have two different prices. That is not fair to the person who pays more for the same thing, and boy will they get angry if they find out they could have just gone to your Etsy page and gotten it cheaper. So be consistent. 3 - You'll do better selling on Etsy if you sell things that you aren't spending too much time and materials on. You want to sell high quality things. Just maybe not your art piece with tons of attachments and artistry and time, or gold luster. The average person doesn't see the difference between a simple mug with just a few glazes to make it beautiful, and the one with stamp work and wiped back underglaze and dots of slip. There is still beauty in simplicity. 4 - Back to shipping/packaging. I ship only one way and that is USPS Priority Mail. I get the boxes for free, sent straight to my house. Maybe only 2-3 times have I ever had to use my own box due to needing a larger box. I have my ready to ship items picked up at my front door for free. I save ALL packaging materials that come in shipments to me, which means I barely ever have to buy packaging materials. I buy bubble wrap, and the occasional roll of packing paper, and tape. I add $1.50 packaging fee to each piece, which I think covers it. 5 - Thanks for mentioning the number of items in your shop. That really helps me. I'm going to upload more things and see if I can get over 50. That's hard for me since it's my hobby, I'm not production. But that's good insight as to why sales halt. Thanks, great video!!

    I'm kinda confused with this glaze after using it on 4-5 pieces. Starting at what Amaco advertises with it, I expect like a 50/50 combination of red/black with olive green being in the transition areas between red/black. This is what it shows on the bottle. I enjoy the potential of the glaze. It gives a very dark, rustic sort of feel to whatever you create, and that's something I want to start using in my work. Additionally, there was a review video that Earth Nation Ceramics created that showed an abundance of red being created, regardless of clay body. This had me hopeful that I'd end up with a lot of red. In a practical application, you do not get this. At best, you get mostly black/olive green with hints of red and a LOT of red at the bottom of a piece where the glaze flows down and is allowed to pool. I suppose this is a look? Removing my expectations on color, I still like the look of the glaze, still giving a very dark, rustic feel to the pottery. What I don't like is very little of the red showing. This is not what's shown on the bottle. I suppose how Amaco creates the glaze sample for their bottle is they coat the glaze coupon with the nominal 3 coats of glaze and set it flat on the kiln shelf, allowing that red to pool and to float up to give you a lot of that red color, but I've learned you can't expect this in applications with walls, so basically anything that isn't a plate or plate-shaped. It might be that texturing walls will give places for the glaze to pool and for more red to occur, but this is not something I've tried but might do in the future if I ever gain any interest in creating texture for my pieces (but then even at that point, you're using a busy glaze on a busy design... might look just a bit tacky for my taste). I found this glaze to be fairly stable and didn't run a lot. The only thing it ran a lot on was a bowl that I glazed, and part of me thinks the glaze in the bottle was starting to lose water from me leaving it uncapped for long periods of time (I had to leave it open long periods of time to get thicker coats of application to dry), so it might have functionally been a thicker coat on the outside of that bowl (higher glaze-to-water concentration), but it still didn't run onto the shelf (tall foot rings help). I found thicker coats of 4-5 coats didn't create more red like the bottle suggests, and if it actually does, then it starts blistering at those thicker coats anyway. Quite a few of my pieces were functionally ruined because of this. I will probably keep the pieces around in the odd case that I end up with my own kiln so I can try drop-and-soak firing (which supposedly fixes this) but using my community kilns doesn't afford me that opportunity without great cost. Finally, this doesn't seem to react any differently on iron-bearing clay bodies. If you check the bottle, you'll notice that Amaco recommends using this on clay bodies containing iron. I tested this glaze on white, red, and brown clay bodies, with an imperceptible amount of deviation between results. Now, I personally checked the SDS's of most/all of these clay bodies (or made assumptions) and found that they don't have iron in them, which is partially my fault for checking. However, why I'm glad you created this video, is because Laguna #70 is an iron-bearing clay body, containing less than 2% of brown iron oxide by weight. Looking at your results on that clay body, it really doesn't appear that much different to clays that don't have iron in them. It doesn't even look different compared to the mug that you showed besides the colors that you used to rim each piece. I suspect personally that this glaze went through a reformulation at some point. Again, referring back to Earth Nation Ceramics' video on the glaze, I notice the Ancient Jasper there is a stony red color when applied to his work. When you glaze the pieces here, you show more of a burgundy or maroon color, which is exactly my experience. Despite my dashed expectations on this glaze, I've gotten a ton of compliments using it in my local community studio. People love the look of this glaze and they even note that it looks reduction fired instead of the electric oxidation firing that we have. As much as I hate that it doesn't show more red, I can't help but love the look of it. I consider this a black glaze for people that don't want to use a standard, boring black glaze for their pottery. I still want to experiment with the glaze and just see if it's just the three coats it needs in order to not blister in the kiln, but I can see myself using it more often as I develop my palette for the glazes I use. Thank you for the video.

    • @threelittlepotters
      @threelittlepotters 17 дней назад

      Wow, thanks for the detailed response. I am going to keep experimenting with it as well. I too have found differences between Earth Nation Ceramics and my own tests for some glazes. Especially his video on Micro Ash, I keep meaning to go back to that and try to figure out if I misunderstood something. I feel like one of the benefits to doing these glaze review videos is that sometimes the samples given by the company are often impossible to obtain by the average user. I believe in my review of the new Spectrum sample pack I showed their images along with my results because many were very different. But yes, I too would love more red out of that glaze, but honestly was surprised to get any. I agree with characterizing it as another black glaze with more variation, but that is a spot that is lacking in my current glaze collection, so I'll keep using it. I too wonder about Earth Nation's firing schedule, but haven't looked into it yet. I do a drop hold schedule. Thank you for watching!

      Here's a video with my exact schedule. It's basically go to a soft cone 6, drop about 100 degrees, and then hold for 30 min. ruclips.net/video/U3y7y-R31rE/видео.html My kiln temp readout doesn't usually match what my cones show, so you might need to adjust that top temperature to be a little cooler depending on how your kiln behaves. I think that technique would be perfect for turtle shells. Cactus also works really well to get a slightly more green line between the glaze circles.

You know, like it when you’re on the lecture, you can nod and smile, and ask your questions. I think that’s because you have such a fantastic presence, which is good, but it leaves me with a wish to communicate more directly. Well, that’s just me describing my reaction, and I don’t have any solution to that. But now you know, that you give so much of yourself, that it feels strange not to respond to you. I hope you understand my little crazy thoughts about this!😊

      That makes perfect sense. I've been trying to figure out a way to do some live videos, but it's hard to scroll comments when your hands are all muddy. I really appreciate your comment, and it's nice to know you are nodding along!

    I’ve just spent half an hour stirring my new tub of red hot chowder, it was liquid and rock and very hard to do…..should have rewatched you doing this first and your great idea of using your immersion blender 🙄😂

      Yeah, mine was so weird, like water with a chunk in the middle. Makes me curious about the chemistry of that glaze. I've never seen something hard pan in quite that way.

      @@threelittlepotters so both of our pots of glaze were the same. I almost phoned the company I got the glaze from to say there was something wrong with it as I had to break the hard stuff up with a screwdriver 🙄 and we are both in different countries so it’s not that it’s been stored badly. Looking forward to seeing how mine turn out now 🤗

    Hi Sarah! I definitely struggle with the making of the plugs and pulling from the pots! It does help if you pull the plugs (like Florian does), as it kind-of gets the process started. But it's not easy to hold the pot just right and pull the handle without getting a thin spot in the wrong place. But then again, I haven't been pulling handles for decades! As for extruded, they tend to lack the graceful taper that I like. So I've kind of settled on a combo of the two, and will use a tool to cut the handle from the block of clay, then work one end a bit to get that taper. More work, but to me, it adds a subtle elegance...depending on the style of handle and shape of the pot. On more squared, I leave the handle the same from top to bottom. Great video, and I love that you challenge yourself and show others that we all go through learning processes, no matter how much experience we may have. Anything less is stagnation!

      I agree that graceful taper is so pretty! Thanks for all your thoughts on the process. I am not sure what I will settle into for a final method in the coming years.

    Wow the bottle is incredible!! When I use satin patina with any other glaze, I usually use at least 2 and sometimes 3 coats, it’s a major runner for me. I also fire to a hot cone 6 up to a 7 but I’ve seen it run on others as well. I was really worried when I saw you add all of the other glazes but WOW! It turned out amazingly well. I’m glazing today and I’ll be trying that combo for sure but I’ll put the piece in my box for my top shelf only since it’s much cooler up there in my kiln. Thanks so much.

      Interesting, I'll have to watch out if I run my kiln hotter! Thanks for the tip!

    On those browns that didn't wow you, you could try a refire with cosmic tea dust over the brown for a little pizazz.

    Hi Sarah! Always so much fun to watch your videos! Love this colour! But really I have to stop buying glazes!! My fingers are so crossed for your market to go well!! You should get one of those "buy me a coffee" things for your channel. That way people can support you! I have the cheap Shimpo wheel and I love it. This is the one I use: www.dickblick.com/products/nidec-shimpo-vl-lite-pottery-wheel/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fsearchword%3Dshimpo%20wheel
