NAACP Image Award Nominees - Literary Fiction
Homegoing missing from the list was outrageous. Your top 10 looked good! Never heard of The Warmth of Other Suns, but adding it to my tbr now!
Your post reminds me of a podcast conversation that I remember - maybe Currently Reading? - talking about how "best" books and "favorite" books can be and probably are different. I agree with you about Homegoing - I don't think anything has impacted me in the way it did. I just finished Lula Dean over the weekend - omg what a snapshot of our current state of affairs. Can't wait to hear more of your thoughts! I love your list! I've only read maybe 8-10 of the books on the NYT list, and a few of the ones I read I didn't like much. Honestly, I'd never heard of some of the others. However, I didn't get fully back into reading until about 2018 (I promised myself that my entry into the empty nest life was also my re-entry into a big reading life) so lots of books that came out prior to that escaped my notice. I liked Caste more than Warmth of Other Suns, but I'm a super nerd so I liked the data and social science/political theory approach of Caste more. I'm definitely not normal lol.
I read Yellow Wife first and then House of Eve. The is a small reference to Yellow Wife in House of Eve. It is towards the end of House of Eve. Sedeqa Johnson is one of my favorite authors. I plan to read her entire catalog of books. Yellow Wife is a hard read but a good read too. Enjoy.
I was hoping you would have a Langston Hughes on the list. Added to my TBR
Yay! Great minds think alike. :)
Last week, I finished Uncle Tom's Cabin and bawled like a baby. I've read The House of Eve and picked up Yellow Wife yesterday- I think I'm ready. Whew! I also picked up Townsend Family Recipe for Diaster for my next lighter read. I'm gonna need it. I purchased Not Without Laughter this summer, but I haven't read it yet. Happy reading friend.
Sounds like you are doing some intense reading! Good for you! I hope to get to Yellow Wife and Not without Laughter soon.
Yellow Wife is difficult but such an impactful story! I hope it is a shining 5 stars for you. Lula Dean sounds like my kind of book - I was laughing just listening to you read the synopsis.
That's great to hear! Oh I finished the Lula Dean book and it was delightful AND impactful!!! 5 glowing stars from me!
I have Yellow Wife on my TBR. I so badly want to read it, but I have a feeling that it will be a heart breaker, so I keep putting it off.
Same! I keep feeling like I'm not ready for it
Hello how are you I am 73 and self-taught I was born with cerebral palsy when I was growing up they didn't have helmets to protect your head anyway enough about me I grew up in Harlem New York when I was growing up I used to see Malcolm x I used to walk by the Muslim mosque when he would be the thing that made him the most influential and powerful black man of his time was that he read and memorized the whole entire dictionary. He became I think that some would say a threat to the powers when you come with the truth a lot of people are threatened by knowledge they say knowledge is power.
What an amazing story! Take care!
I click when I saw the Mrs KevOnStage shirt!!! Great video
YES! Love MrsKevOnStage and love that you recognized the shirt. Thank you for stopping by my tiny corner of RUclips. I appreciate the support!
Hello my love 💕 how are you doing I just found your RUclips channel I think if they had more black history glasses in schools across the country that never be less young black people in jails and prisons across the country especially in the inner cities. It's so sad that the majority of people of color do not know who they are or where they are from my mom grew up in the south . The first I went to North Carolina to visit my grandparents aunts and uncles and other relatives black people could not do anything you could not shop in the Some stores as the white people. I'm from New York City and I am a self taught black man oh and by the way when I was growing up I used to go to bars to eat and drink 🍻 one of the bars which I Sometimes went to I met a man that mans name was Malcolm x if you saw the movie 🍿 it was the same bye bar when where he hid the man over the head with a bottle. I met his wife Dr Betty shabazz over the phone. She passed away some years ago. Where are you from I have a friend who has a black history book 📚 store in his house 🏠
Wow! Thank you for sharing your story and thoughts. Take care!
I forgot about Jane Austen July! Thanks for the reminder!
You are so welcome! I'm glad to be participating this year. :)
If you like Sense and Sensibility, check out the 1995 film adaptation.
Thank you and I will most certainly try!
I love your reading Sass 🤣🤣🙌🏾💯Hope you have a great reading month in July 💜
Thank you! 🤗 You too!
Jane Austen is a legend💯eek I’m reading Sense & Sensibility too🔥🔥
Awesome!!! I'm enjoying it and I'm almost finished. Love you and your channel sister!
SANG It GWORL 🔥🔥😂
LOL! My girls were so over it. :)
I recently read Sisters of the Lost Nation and really loved it, especially the Indigenous legend and lore that it included.
YES! I want to read his previous book now!
Loved your detailed descriptions! I work as an assistant librarian, so I love hearing reviews like this to help recommend titles to people. I hope you have a wonderful day!
Oh thank you! That means so much to me! I appreciate your kind words.
I wanted to love this book but it was hard for me to get through. I think it has nothing to show for how long it is. Amy-Rose was the most tolerable character in my opinion.
I've heard that from other readers too! Amy-Rose was my favorite character. I wish the sequel focused on her story.
Ours by Phillip B. Williams not sure if you like the device of magical realism.
YES! This one has been on my TBR for some time now! I'll take this as a sign that I need to grab a copy. :)
Happy Juneteenth, and Happy Pride Month. May I suggest The Gilda Stories for Pride Month read. I don’t if you like horror. But Jewell Gomez Black lesbian vampires. Another new book recommendation One of Our Kind by Nicola Yoon. It’s kind of like Get Out and The Stepford Wives.
Happy Juneteenth! Thank you for all of these wonderful recommendations! I already had One of Our Kind on my TBR. Looks like I'll be adding more :)
Homegoing is legendary. No other book has had that profound effect or impact on me as homegoing. One of a kind!
Same sis! Same!!!!
My husband’s family created an online bookclub in 2020. Three generations of folks participate in it.
That sounds amazing! What is the channel name?
😂 The Cherry-Picked Bookclub meets online but doesn’t have a channel. Whew some of things said at a meeting don’t need to be recorded. 😳😂
I DNF'd at the train station. I just wasn't feeling it. Now you've got me thinking about it again.
I must admit I had to push through. It wasn't until towards the end that I fully appreciated it. Deacon King Kong remains my favorite James McBride novel.
As always, excellent descriptions! I can’t read Educated because it will make my blood pressure skyrocket. Would you say Homecoming was better than Transcendent Kingdom? I’ve read TK but not Homecoming. Did we talk about S A Cosby?
Hi love! Yes yes yes Homegoing was a MILLION times better than Transcendent Kingdom. I didn't care for TK at all. I loved Razorblade Tears by SA Cosby and plan to read all of his books. Not sure what's taking me so long to get to them lol Love ya!
The movie is Premonition!!!
Premonition was a good movie
@@maryburrell3948 yes! Now I want to watch it again lol
Hey Larosa! You have some great books to read this month. I am most excited for you to read the girl with the dragon tattoo. I read it years ago, and I couldn't put the book down. All 3 books in that series are truly captivating. Enjoy!
Thanks love! I must admit I haven't gotten around to it yet because it's on the longer side. I hope to read it soon!
Great book review for June. 🩷
Thank you! :)
Thank you so much for your lovely review!
I am blushing over here! I am such a HUGE fan of yours! Thank YOU for sharing your gifts with us!
Cute shirt! Loving the musical themed video idea. That Grammy performance of Man in the Mirror still gives me chills ❤
Right?! Same! Thank you for the encouragement :)
Love this series - great idea!
Glad you enjoy it! It's proving to be more challenging than I thought it would be lol
Okay🙌🏾. I am reading the book this weekend. A colleague left a copy on my desk a few months ago, and you have motivated me to start it.
Hope you enjoy it!
@@LaRosaReads I loved it!
Ms Butler’s first sci fi novel was The Surviver. This book is extremely hard to find because Ms Butler requested that it never be reprinted. She regretted writing and publishing this novel. As a teen I read about Ms Butler’s accomplishment in Essence magazine and immediately got a copy. Over the years I loaned it out several times and at some point lost it. 😢. It is now selling for hundreds of dollars as a rare book. Thank God I was able to acquire a copy about 15 years ago.
WOW! Thank you for sharing this information! I'd never heard of The Survivor! No one talks about it.
Of course “Kelsey” didn’t connect with the black characters. The Street is a classic
Weeellllll.... lol Yes, perspective is everything
I’ve read all except the 1st book. Rick Rubin joint
Cool! I definitely recommend you check the Rick Rubin book out!
Totally agree about Will! Loved that audiobook.
It's one of the most memorable listening experiences I've had!
I make it a habit to read simultaneously: a physical book, kindle book and audio book from different genres of course. Will Smith's book is in my top 3 audiobooks along with The Love Songs of W.E.B Du Bois and The Warmth of Other Suns. I love listening to audiobooks while driving, cleaning, cooking and when walking for exercise. 🙂
Me too! Listening to audiobooks makes me so productive. lol You've listened to some gems!
A recent sleeper hit for me was Nowhere, Exactly by M G Vassanji--about immigrants as artists, identity and politics, and how to 'belong' --really profound reflections. 🤌🏽
That sounds incredible! Adding to my TBR now!
Happy almost-Audiobook Month, woot woot! I read about one a month too, but allow for fiction. :)
That's great! I'm starting to enjoy fiction audiobooks more and more!
When is Audiobook Month, I love Audible 🎧👂🏾
@@maryburrell3948 June! Next weekend!
I am a huge audiobook fan. Now the fallback of audio books is if the narrator is not good or if my ear doesn’t like the way the narrator sounds. That’s why I like the samples on Audible.
Oh I totally agree! Sampling is a must!
I love this video!!! I’m not sure how I found you but RUclips did a big one by recommending you to meeee!! Avid reader here, avid “audiobooker” as well 💚💚💚. You’ve moved me to pick up the RR book so thank you for that, all the rest I have read and loved. A recco from me: anything read by Joe Morton lol- 🙌🏽.
Oh thank you so much! Welcome to my tiny corner of the internet lol <3 I'm so glad you're here and hope to keep talking books with you! Let me know what you think of RR's masterpiece!
Interesting list! I rarely listen to audiobooks. I only listen on long road trips and tend to favor celebrity memoirs. My favorite was Checking In by Michelle Williams. It was a good mix of music and mental health awareness. I also liked Every Little Step by Bobby Brown and Almost Interesting by David Spade.
Aaahhh so many folks have told me Michelle Williams's memoir is amazing! I can't wait to listen to Mariah Carey's!
BOOBY BROWN!!! Yes!
I loved the audiobook by Lenny Kravitz. It was fabulous. I didn’t care for Will Smiths audiobook unfortunately though.
I can see where Will's audiobook can be too much for some listeners. Lenny's was simply his voice which made hist story so rich. Will's had a lot of bells and whistles.
Lets be honest. Some people are biased any time a Black person is at the forefront of a story. I just ignore 1 stars on those books.
Sad, but oh so true... smh
Hey Larosa! Hahahahahaha I had a good time watching you go through these reviews. The reviews about "If Beale could talk" had me an edge. Just cuz I enjoyed the book.😊 Your reactions were respectful but still conveyed your own feelings on the comments. 😅
Thanks love! Yes, I was like, "Don't mess with THE James Baldwin!" lol
As an english major, ive realized a lot of people when reading can lack an unbiased critical approach and allow their own personal views of genre/topic/style (subjective ideas, that can be liked or disliked based on taste) to influence their basic comprehension of the text. this is something my professor ms are constantly battling, because students start off reading classics with a negative view of the genre as boring, and allow that to influence their opinion of objective aspects of the writing- like the lack or existence of character development. its kinda sad too, because it can prevent people from enjoying books that are good, and feature objectively good writing and topics/themes, because they go into it with a negative perspective
Aaahh such valid and strong points! It's so sad and folks miss out on looking through a new window with a new perspective...
I love this! The STREET is phenomenal. What in the world are these people talking about. 👀🤔 Beale Street is soo good. American Sirens I enjoyed but need to finish!
Yes! While I appreciate different opinions on books, some reviews have me asking questions like, "Did we read the same book?" LOL
lol when people say things like “I didn’t like the characters” it’s like well duh maybe you weren’t *supposed* to like them
That part!!!
I question if some people even have read the book sometimes .
Yes me too and it's so frustrating!
