    is the sword supposed to be rebound at the end of the cuts? I've never seen iaido practitioners intentionally bounce their swords in that way

    • @IvanMeloBudo
      @IvanMeloBudo 3 месяца назад

      That’s a great question. Multiple factors come into play for the rebounding. It can happen when someone trains with a heavy and long blade (like mine) and also when extra power is being generated, so to stop it without the rebound would take a lot of stress to the joints (wrists and potentially elbows). It’s hardly done anymore, as modern Iaido has become very standardized and the pursuit of an aesthetic ideal takes the precedent over developing the body. In our lineage, we train with shorter swords, longer swords, heavier blades, etc etc, which is wisdom who came down from our sensei’s teacher - a direct student of the founder of Muso Shinden ryu . You can see this rebound action being done by TK Chiba, Junichi Haga and even Nakayama Hakudo (albeit it less emphasized).

    Why even bother to apply atemi before the kotegaeshi? Doesn't tenkan version preclude the need for atemi?

    • @IvanMeloBudo
      @IvanMeloBudo 11 месяцев назад

      Hi there! As you can see, I only did the atemi in the first two executions, just to emphasize the body positioning and possible opening for strikes. The third time I performed the technique without atemi. Thank you for your question 🙏🏾

    I cannot hope for you to understand the depth of my appreciation for your videos. I began training myself for power and speed at 12, based on methods used during the pre-Meiji era. I have read all of the classics of Japanese martial tradition, with Musashi & the Tao at the center. I studied as a student of Yamada-Shihan in NYC. He encouraged us to study related atts, both martial & non-martial. He was & is a close friend lf Mitsuzaka-Sensei, the 8th dan iaido chief instructor of the Tokyo Police Department. I was fortunate to be invited to participate in a several weeks long iaido seminar. A major focus was the attention to the most minutes details of the move from zazen, the quick cut, the ritual cleansing & return to scabbard, and finally sitting again in meditation has had 😊across my life and all of my art. So you know that I know what I am looking at. Thank you. Your art is impeccable, and watching brings an inner calm. Please keep producing this type of clear precise technique videos. Sincerely Dan Goodman (Matt’s dad)

      Gosh Dan, what a present to receive your message! As well as Matt’s. How fortune you were to train at NYA under Yamada sensei, you surely met a very important person in my life there: Donovan Waite sensei. Did you also get to meet Mitsuzuka sensei? I really appreciate your words. I strive to make my videos better so that I can at least inspire people to pursue their own path in martial arts. They are also a great way for my to self study. If you or Matt are on Instagram, please check my videos on @ivanmelobudo . My best wishes 🙏🏽

      @@IvanMeloBudo Donovan came after me. My iaido training was under Mitsuzika sensei when he was in nyc for a few weeks. Met Chiba-sensei, Kamai sensei & several others. My personal path has been to study everything that I can. My journey is ultimately to find & defeat my enemy within. Helluva a fight but I have him finally in my sight. It’sall me Matt’s dad. Piggybacking. But these days mostly me. The search for the enemy within is the ultimate battle in a martial artist’s life. It has been a priceless journey. Thankf for your kind comments.
