Malama Mala Cleanup Dive February 2022
Просмотров 272 года назад
We believe it is important to give back to the ocean that gives us so much. This February we adopted our favorite dive site, Mala, and did the first of many clean up dives. In partnership with Project AWARE's Dive Against Debris 15 divers collected 110 lbs of garbage at Mala. We then categorized the garbage to send our data to Project AWARE for use in determining what are the main polluters in ...

Once a month the Dive Maui team services the NOAA buoy, MOBY. MOBY is located in open ocean 6000 feet deep. Its always an exciting dive. This trip we not only cleaned the buoy but were visited by some pelagic sharks.

Humpback Whale Giving Birth on Maui -- First Time Recorded
Просмотров 37 тыс.4 года назад
www.goscubadivemaui.com Arguably the best day of our 2019-2020 whale watching season. A female humpback and male escort circled the boat. When we put our cameras in the water we noticed something really special a small whale tail starting to come of the female! (Check around 51 seconds in the video). She was giving birth! A humpback birth had never been recorded so we called NOAA. NOAA observed...

Whale Behavior---Very Close Encounter with a Flirty Humpback

These 2 adult humpbacks loved our boat! They could not get enough of showing off and flirting with us. NOTE We were operating under a NOAA film permit when this video was made. Whales are to be respected, please do not approach a whale within 100 yards.
Hawaiian Monk Seal

A rare Hawaiian Monk Seal spotted on our Lanai Cathedrals 2 Tank Boat. These beautiful creatures are critically endangered, please do not approach them and report any sitings to NOAA.
Mother and Calf Humpback Whales Swimming Together
Просмотров 1174 года назад
Every winter humpback whales migrate to Maui to mate and give birth. Observing mother's care for their newborn babies and teach them how to survive is one of the biggest treats of the animal kingdom. Here we see a common swimming position, the calf is next to it's mothers side just near her head.
Whale Hello There

Why do humpback whales slap their pectoral fins at the surface? We don't know, but it might be for communication. It certainly seems this whale is trying to say hello. What do you think?

Thank you so much for all you went thru to get this footage and bring it to all of us. I love the negative comments. That’s the closest most of us will ever get to a humpback giving birth. And closest I will get to a humpback Period. Cuz… umm… too close. not for me. Lol. Thank you. On a separate note…. Do u think you were a little too close? Maybe stressed her out a little bit? I was scared that she’s freak out and the video would end spiraling to the ocean floor. Idk. Please advise. And I mean no disrespect

Mahalo for your concern for the whale's wellbeing. We agree that is the most important thing always. We were close, yes. But we were over 100 yards away and she approached us. The law in the islands is that you cannot motor within the 100 yard vicinity of a whale. We could not engage our engines and drive away to distance ourselves because that would endanger her, The roving engine, if not maiming the female, would certainly have agitated her. She came to us, closer and closer, and we followed her lead.

Idiotic to be filming so close to the whale and encircling her while she's giving birth. Imagine one's wife being filmed by a stranger while she's giving birth!

We always remain 100 yards from whales and if they approach we turn off our engines. In this instance the female approached our boat and we could not start the engines to move away. Indeed turning on the engines and motoring away from a whale when they are that close would endanger the animal. Protecting these whales is our utmost priority and we would never motor when they are too close or go closer than 100 yards. Sometimes, however, the whales do come to us and that is what happened here.

The footage you are seeing is taken from a phone on a boat. It is illegal to go in the water with these whales. We respect them greatly and would not break the law or get too close. We were on the water and the whale approached us so we had to turn off the engines. The naturalist put her phone in the water to see the whale and we noticed a fluke coming out. This is not high quality, but it is the first time we have ever seen even the beginning of a humpback being born.

This is insanely cool! How lucky you were to see it! For those wishing it was the full video or are disappointed that it was uneventful remember this is a wild animal it needs its space and the whales chose to get close to them, and being a wild animal things aren’t going to go your way this is literally Birth and you wanted it to be eventful? It’s already the first recorded which in and of itself is very cool and very lucky.

    • @divemaui8998
      @divemaui8998 2 года назад

Thank you for understanding how special this is. The footage is not "eventful" and "bad" because we did not get in the water. This whale approached us and we simply put a phone in the water and saw what was happening. Birth is not meant to be entertainment. It is however beautiful and the first time we have seen even the beginning of the birth of a humpback whale. They are elusive and majestic animals.

90% of whale's lives are underwater. On a whale watch you are lucky to see portions of the other 10%. It is illegal to swim with whales on Maui and we also abide by the law that you must stay 100 yards away from whales when on a boat. This female approached our boat and we had to turn off the engines. This is what we saw when she came close to us by putting a camera in the water and standing on the deck of the boat. It is actually quite remarkable as a humpback's birth has never been documented. We called NOAA when we saw this happening and NOAA respectfully followed the female until she swam into water that was too rough. It is the closest we have to footage of a humpback whale being born and was very exciting for the researchers on Maui.

We were only as close as we were because we stopped 100 yards away and the female chose to swim towards our boat. Once she was closer than 100 yards we turned off our engines and waited for her to move away.
