I think crime got worse after the pandemic, but so it did everywhere else. My rule of thumb is to go out in a group of 3 or more, and never carry around an expensive item/ purse, never wear earbuds. Otherwise, I think there is some oversaturation of crime reports in the news. I.e., if you’re in a densely populated area, you’ll see a higher crime rate.

Dude your delusional...as a Chicago resident I'm telling you Chicago is not safe not even downtown. Rivernorth, how many shootings and murders the last 3 years look it up. State Street a ghost town with closed business. Families no longer go downtown or Michigan Ave, the people you see are from out of town. More people shot and killed in Chicago than New York and Los Angeles combined. Shame on you for lying to tourists. The crime numbers are public!
