Unprofessional. You should be able to play the keytar without looking down at your instrument. You should be able to play blindfolded with earmuffs on and have everything work out well. If you can't do that, there should be no place for you in an elite organization. Bluecoats snare drum line is a piece of crap. Bluecoats is a piece of crap.
my fault
@@ryandavidjacobs I am the Ghost Drummer of New York. Nearly all DCI snare drummers trace to me and my students. DCI snare drumming is based on the Bavarian snare drumming tradition, via Gus Moeller, then what I taught. I found out what happened to my students, that they became influential teachers. So, I really do know what I'm doing. The Bluecoat snare drum sucks because none of the drummers have absolutely correct basic technique. Their left hand basket grip should be more open (gives much better control). The right hand must be in a neutral position, not lateral / to the right of the midline. This means if you are standing in front of the snare drummers, you should see at least an inch of the butt of the stick and the stick must not follow the line of the wrist and lower arm. Done right, the drumsticks form a 45 / 45 / 90 right triangle. The right hand grip is seriously important. The way the Bluecoats snare drum line grips the sticks greatly increases the chances that they will develop a really nasty repetitive motion disorder--and it is certainly possible that they could develop radial sensory nerve neuropathy, which is the second most painful hand injury. The correction for this means ordering the snare drummers not to play anything other than the exercises a good instructor would give beginners as part of their first lesson. (These lessons address proper posture, proper grip, proper form--turning your wrist as if you're opening a door, keeping your wrists in a neutral position.) My experience is that it is A LOT harder to correct a problem in basic technique than it is to learn basic technique right from the start. My experience is that most 'elite' drummers with poor basic technique will absolutely refuse to be restarted. It takes about 3-6 months to relearn basic technique if you've played before. I know. I had to relearn my 7 stroke rolls because of a fundamental error in my technique. I was heavy handed, which is bad. So, I spent three months just doing corrective exercises. I developed exquisite stick control and dynamics control. When I was recognized as a drum master, I ended up commissioning drum from a master dry cooper who is regarded as the best dry cooper in North America I would not have been the Ghost Drummer of New York if I didn't have that drum. Playing my drum is akin to driving a Formula 1... an ordinary instrument is akin to driving a road legal sports car. I know, because I had a boss who was a Formula 1 driver in the 70s. The language he uses to describe the difference in performance is the same language I use... you could replace 'car' with 'snare drum' and what he said about what it was like to drive a Formula 1 race car is identical to what it is like playing the best drum you have ever played--and it's your own personal instrument!) If you want to see a drum line that has great basic technique, look at Top Secret. This is why if I had judged the Bluecoats snare drum line, I would have given it a big fat 0 for technique. As I said before, what they are doing is very dangerous. (I know. I have bad repetitive stress disorder injuries due to poor computer workstation set-ups, which were the norm in the 70s-80s. when I was a software engineer. It wasn't from drumming, for I was a stickler when it came to form. I am a Moeller / Bavarian / German drummer. This is the style of drumming practiced in the DCI.) I had been an athlete who had been trained to perform at my physiological limit before I was a drummer.) When I teach, I want students to ask questions. I want students to understand WHY things are done the way we do it. I taught my students to pay attention to what's going on in exercise physiology, athletic training, dance training, sports psychology, etc. Even though I'm considered to be a grand master, I can tell you this: the lessons learned from developing world class athletes, the lessons learned from developing Special Forces soldiers can apply to the training of elite musicians. We are in a living tradition... we learn from each other and we're better for it. With that, I ALWAYS teach my students to practice handling performance disasters. The fact that I march and play blindfolded meant that when I got blinded (once by firecrackers, the other time by lights), it didn't phase me one bit. At a solo drum competition (which I won), I got placed on stage in a room that rang badly. It wasn't an issue for the drum judge, but it meant that I could not reliably hear myself play. I certainly believe that this was intentional. Again, because I had gone through a lot of sensory deprivation training, the fact I could not reliably hear myself play wasn't an issue. I put in my earplugs and brought it on. Nearly all of my professional musician students came to me, not because of a nasty technical problem, but for performance issues, similar to what you showed. I always teach my students to make eye contact with the audience. I teach my students to pick out several people in the crowd who has an open, expressive face, a face that feels supportive and play to those people. I perform better. (I went to a Boston Symphony Orchestra performance and the brilliant dramatic soprano Jessye Norman sang Bluebeard's Castle to me. She choose three people in the audience to sing to, I was one of them. I knew what she was doing and that it was important for me to give her good, reliable facial feedback.) I know this is long. I hope that you find this useful. Feel free to share this with anyone you know associated with the Bluecoats snare drum line. Someone needs to warn them that what they are doing is seriously wrong and increases the risk of serious injury.

These damned things only belong with marching bands, NEVER near a drum corps field. Whomever thinks this is OK is completely daft.
boooooo. have you considered having fun
“Hii Ryan” 🤗”HeeeHeeeHeeeHeee”
Great video!
Cool!!! ❤
First!
Sorry Anyways this is so awsome and wall-e is one of my favorite movies of all time!
I'm guessing that short chord suspension at 0:25 would've made Doug Thrower proud! I saw your HS premier of this as well - only to realize the student conductor was Karina Howey (who went on to lead Blue Stars for some incredible shows)? That's a LOT of talent coming out of that program...
this dude is a legend
What keytar model were you using
Roland AX Edge
quick question wondering how you setup the keytar to sound system and everything
5:10 DAMN BASSES 😤

Loved it man, far out. I marched in the 90’s, great job!!!
Neowwmmmmm
Ryan you an absolute W. If you come across this comment can you explain to me why they hold their tuba's like that?
The amount of fun your having in this video has made me get off my phone and practice more so that one day I can have as much as fun
Ryan is such a main charecter
Roses are red We love this a ton But the reason we’re here Is 7:41
How to be a DCI legend in one simple steps: be this guy
How do they even find a person for keytar. Do they just come out at auditions and be like, “yo, anybody play keytar?” Or do they audition especially for it?
It’s hard to remember that this guy has a life and a family and isn’t just the keytar guy the time
"the bread of god is bread we have the meat"
Pov: you're the main character
11:59 bacon ravioli 😐
They’re actually saying “makin’ ravioli” lol
I got goosebumps completely with your interpretation, I saw that you played this keytar with your soul, I am very happy for people like you. so it gives more gas to our soul. what a great presentation
At 0:37 I think Ryan was talking to the bass drummers. (From experience)
Your commentary is perfection, had me straight giddy for half the video. Plus that keytar solo was straight wicked, you fricking legend!
@13:53 ryans camera mount malfunctions to reveal how short he actually is.
LEGEND. Holy shit. I didn't realize just how much of a musical genius you were until seeing this. Sick piano solo on its own With well times and choreographed tap dancing?? AT INTERLOCHEN??? In front of an audience.
Are you conducting or playing piano here? I am not enough of a stalker to know what you look like :( This is sick. Not sure how this is not more widely viewed. "Bluecoats keytar guy composes choral masterpiece"
I think piano
Are you marching this year?
Sadly no :/ my original musical is getting produced by a theatre company in July - August. It was definitely a tough decision to make but I’m so excited to cheer my friends on from the stands this year!!
