Can You Determine a Guitar Brand Just By Hearing It ?
We all hear acoustic guitars differently. I'm curious if we can determine the brand of an acoustic guitar just by hearing it (without seeing it).

    Been playing for 56 years. I own about 35 guitars. I’m a lefty. I own a Martin 0-18, 000-16 CE Nylon, 000-28 Eric Clapton, 1991 D28, and a D45. I’ve OWNED, a Taylor 314, and a 914. I currently do not own a Taylor. I think Martin is miles better. IMO.

No way, it is bull crap if you can tell off computer speakers, all you liars. THERE IS NO WAY POSSIBLE IN HELL YOU COULD TELL. You could not tell if there were 100 different guitars on a stage and you were in the audience listening. If you can tell than tell me what kind of strings each has on it and if its a dreadnaught, jumbo or orchestra model. NO WAY POSSIBLE!!!!

I actually got it right!😊 I've played Martin, owned a Taylor 314 ,but have kept my Seagull with solid rosewood back and sides (forgot what it's called) and have a seagull S6 as a beater and backup. I thought it was most likely the emerald but wouldn't have bet a large sum if money. If the test was repeated I might or might not get it again...🤔

  • @TearlessGosling

I was thinking the seagull; would be interesting to hear a blind play through of all four doing one section. Also it would be nice to know if you feel you can hear a difference (or maybe a family member) as your copy won't have the compression of RUclips affecting it.

The guitar techs at the major retailers will tell you that every fourth or fifth Martin they pull out of the box is good. When asked about Taylor guitars, they quickly agree that every single one is good out of the box. There is a distinct difference in quality control. Taylor guitars are manufactured in a climate controlled environment. Martin guitars are not…… End of the day, choosing the guitar you like the most, is most similar to picking a good wine. Every opinion is valid. For me, my next guitar will be a Furch, which is built in the Czech Republic. I’ve been looking for a high grade short-scale guitar. Their new Pioneer model, hits the spot perfectly. It’s approximately the size of a cut away parlor with a 24 3/16” scale.

I own a Martin D-41, Martin OM-28, and Taylor 814ce Builders Edition. They're all higher end guitars. I prefer the Martins. The Martins have a richer sound, a more balanced sound, more resonance, and longer sustain. The Taylor is nice, but I find it has a thin metallic sound on the high end like you'd find in a cheap guitar, more tinny than bright. Note separation is more pronounced in the Taylor when playing chords but it has less resonance and sustain. I've played a Martin D-18 that I think is somewhat comparable to the Taylor in that they both have a sharper sound. But the D-18 is about half the price of the Taylor 814ce Builders Edition. Many things can affect the sound of the guitar, including the strings. You can change strings to your taste, but you can't change the wood or bracing. Taylors are often praised for being a more "playable" guitar. My Taylor is very playable, but my OM-28 has a modified low oval high performance taper neck that is more playable for my size hands. I think the Taylor is better for fingerpicking because of the note separation. The Martins aren't as loud when fingerpicking. But the Martins fill a room with sound when strummed with a pick in a way the Taylor doesn't. Overall, my vote is for Martin.

Martin has been in business since 1833 and known for making the some of the finest if not the best guitars ever. Blue ridge guitars are made overseas and are more budget-friendly guitars. When it comes down to sound and quality.... it's really not fair to compare the two. The Blue ridge is the better sounding guitar and the build quality is as good or better than other guitars costing thousands of dollars more.

  • @thefreese1

I think they're both overrated. Martin because of the name can put any piece of crap it wants out there and sell it. So many of them sound like a monkey beating on a trash can lid compared to they're old instruments where time was taken and each step was checked out by a good season luthier in that particular Department. Taylor has the same problem . Because of it name that tends to put out junk also. What a person has to remember is it goes from instrument to instrument no matter who the maker is, if it is being made in a factory. Because they're going to use whatever bargain would they can get and when the person that is picking out this piece of wood to put on a guitar is not going through every piece of wood to see if it's going to have the total quality like they do and a production factory, you're pretty much stuck with whatever happens to come down the line. They have both seem to slide from Nitro finish to Polly finish of some kind except for the upper models. And with the use of CNC equipment they can go right through most of the work without any true Hands-On like there should be . Or like they once did. One thing you notice right off the bat with a tailor is they weigh a ton. Why is this? Because of the Finish. And if it's the bottom end guitars it's because of all the glue in the plywood. And the Finish. The problem is, today people have not much of a clue as to what the original guitars of both companies used to sound like because they rarely get a chance to put one in their hand . That's the real comparison. So if I can pick up a CNC Asian guitar that sounds just as good or sometimes better than either of those two companies then that's the one I'll probably be playing, because I am no longer putting my money on pieces of junk simply because of their name. In fact I can have a decent luthier, build me a guitar that is a lot better than either one of those two companies for less than half the price as long as I'm not wanting a lot of bling bling put on it. Keep in mind I'm not talking about a renowned luthier that's famous. But simply a luthier that knows what he's doing when he's picking out the wood. Next time you pick up a Martin, put a mirror inside the sound hole and look up at the bracing. What a nasty mess. They can't even clean the squeeze out. And if they are tap tuned I'll kiss your blankety blank. But there's no way I'm going to drop six or seven Grand on a guitar because of its name. Or even three or four grand on the same model without the bling bling when I can buy an Asian guitar for half the price that sounds better, and the fit and finish is the same or better .

I'll be honest, didn't have my glasses on and thought Harrison Ford started a guitar channel from the thumbnail. I guess his best advice was around how to handle Wookies, not so much about gigable instruments. Anyway cool video man, I subbed. I'm going to add the guitar with a strong midrange being difficult to sing over onto my list of excuses for performing badly. I also now wonder how many guitarists I've seen who I thought were tuning by ear but were using a guitar with a built in tuner, I didn't know that was a thing. I change tunings frequently, people will think I'm far more gifted than I am if I get one of those. The Marler is very beautiful for sure.
