Using Flat Pattering to Make the Perfect Skirt.
I am continuing my patterning videos. This time I am making the perfect basic black skirt. I am finally going back to work in person. And after a quick look at my post lockdown wardrobe I am in desperate need of some classic basic pieces. I use the sloper that I made last video and put it to good use to make the best black skirt I have ever owned.

How to Make a Sloper or Block that Fits Your Body!
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
I show you how to make a skirt sloper or block. A sloper is used in flat patterning as a base to make all other patterns. I show you how to take a set of measurements and transform that data into a skirt block. It' great to have a pattern that will fit you perfectly and that you can turn into all kinds of different types of skirts. The Draft I used: www.etsy.com/listing/1042388235/1950s-pattern...

I know I'm no #MarilynMonroe but one can pretend, can't one? In this video, I make a copy of her purple knit blouse from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", designed by the genius William Travilla. I started out with Gertie's Charm Pattern for her Gardner top and hack it to be Marilyn's. I also used a vintage sewing tool to make the insertion to put in the neck line and it was easier than I expected! F...

Holiday Krampus Poodle Skirt
Просмотров 4474 года назад
Krampus meets the poodle skirt. Strange combo, maybe, but I love how it turned out. With the global pandemic ruining fun everywhere, I wanted to create some of my own holiday fun! I decided to make a felt skirt with my favorite Christmas monster, Krampus. In the 1950s, wool felt skirts were very popular. Now, I did not use wool felt with this skirt, because wool felt is expensive! I went with c...

Quick Quarantine Delightfully Lazy Loungewear #yesterdayspajamas
Thanks so much for making this achievable for me with a simple, logical and well presented explaination. I have a pattern i want to do this to but it needs a FBA. Do i do the FBA before or after grading the pattern?
Your voice was drowned out by the music noise you chose to insert, which ruined the video. Can you not live 1.5 mins without music noise in your ears? The music noise was insanely irritating, ruined the content, marked you as an amateur video maker, and lost you a subscription. DO NOT PUT MUSIC INTO A DEMO VIDEO!
That is fire 🔥 I love that movie
Ooh this was so helpful! I can now tackle some of those pretty patterns in my stash with confidence! Great tips and love your vibe <3
Does it hurt the pattern to iron it flat? I’ve done it a couple of times but had mixed results
Don't know if you're still responding to this old video, but just in case: two questions! At 4:19 you say you're adding 1/16" to the waist and then you just draw a very slightly wider line. Why did you do this? (When you show your measurements, you said you needed 1 & 1/16" for each piece? I thought? Does the waist not get bigger when you slash the pattern? (Sorry if I'm being thick here!). Also, I'm surprised the darts stay the same. Is that something you fiddle with later? Or just something that doesn't change that much across sizes? Thank you for your video!
Thanks for teaching. I don't know if I can get it done, but I try. Greetings from Germany 🌹
What is Sho Sho, please?
Short for shoulder to shoulder
FANTASTIC!
I had found two patterns, one from 1937 and the other from 1940. They are from an old Italian magazine and they are wrapped in paper and the pieces are really small and low-key damaged, and I'm really scared to ruin them since the war might have affected them heavily (my city/where the patterns are from was in really terrible condition after the war). But I've noticed that on the cover it shows the pieces of the pattern and I was thinking if it is possible to grade those without having to touch the original pieces...
Why did you do the pattern pieces back to front? (When copying them onto something else, the paper etc) As you are left with a pattern pieces that’s got all its details on the wrong side? I hope that makes sense
No reason really. I am dyslexic. And I don’t have issues seeing the pattern right to left or right to left. The pattern is symmetrical so it’s not really an issue. But I do understand that this would bug some peoples brains. I think it was more of a me paying more attention to the information I was giving camera shots being right etc. Just an oversight.
Nice! Is there a way to make this same style dress but make it with more sturdier fabric? It will be a work dress and I would like for it to last a long time
Love you videos. I really hope you come back soon!
I have just found your channel. You have the best instructions I have found so far! I am now a fan and a follower. It has been 2 years since you posted anything.....please come back and make more videos!
That is the wrong Buttonhole attachment for a # 401.. It will fit your # 404 ( Straight stitch machine ). The Singer #401 uses the "Singer Professional Buttonhole" attachment. FYI, your machine is a very early "production model" from 1956.
I'm obsessed with carefully ironing every pattern piece and envelope, then carefully refolding the pieces
Looks fantastic 😍
These are beautiful. Thank you for your post. Do you think these come up high enough on the inner thighs to reduce thigh chafing? I have been toying with the idea of making things like this to wear underneath dresses on an everyday basis, but using bright patterned fabrics.
Just subscribed although I can see you haven't made a video in a long time. Ever the optimist, I live in hope that a new video will suddenly pop up. I watched the block video first. I've heard of them but never understood how they worked. When adjusting your block for the skirt pattern couldn't you use the pleat and pocket placement on the pattern as a guide to the size of pleat, pocket placement, etc. I don't have the skill to look at the pattern picture, especially a drawing and guesstimate where to put them. Please come back. These videos are fascinating and very useful. X
Holy cow! This is the first time I've ever been able to understand this process! Thank you!!
The music was too loud. I really couldn't hear you very well. It made it off putting for me. Shame, as I was interested in this.
Is your sewing machine a Singer 401A? If so what do you think about that machine? I loved your satin Hollywood nightgown, I only wish it was modeled by a human. I reminded me of something Barbara Stanwyck or Bette Davis would wear in one of those wonderful old movies from the 40s. Let me know about your sewing machine because I am contemplating buying one.
Thankyou so much for this - I have just made up a vintage pattern as is in a 34in bust and no way going to fit me. This is great. So simple too.
Best demo I've seen and I've got some Nancy zieman books that you made it easier for me to understand. Thanks
I would recommend ironing the original piece to have the most accurate shape to your pattern. It's gonna be a bear upsizing this, so make it as accurate as possible. Every wrinkle that isn't laying flat literally changes the shape.
Except this pattern was too brittle to do this. I usually do press all of my pattern pieces. But I was not willing to destroy this pattern in the process.
A dry iron would flatten out nicely.
This is amazing ❤. Good job.
I want to gift it to my wife so sorry for me neither I know anything about it nor my wife so I want someone to guide me about it.
Hello everyone. I am from Majid Pakistan where am I now to buy this machine because I have no idea about it. As I see you all are appreciating it so much I also like it now.
I love your dress and your personality 😂❤
This is beautiful, i have never sewn anything and this looks very complicated but i will try one day
Do the vintage catalogue hv a illustration booklet on alterations will like to know where to get them thanks
In the sixties it was so IN to have a gonk sitting on your bed All the ones we had were circular Hmmm I wonder what happened to mine
I love that 404 model!! If anyone has the luck to find one in working order, I highly recommend not to hesitate buying it! My neighbor sold this model with it’s original oak sewing table and seat for $1 about 30 years ago. I’ve had many fancy sewing machines in my life and currently have another fancy machine. My late husband gifted to me a a singer with umpteenth sewing stitches but, this one is still my favorite! It’s a workhorse and just like you say it’s so easy to maintain. I intend on passing it down to my oldest granddaughter who i had taught how to sew when she was 12. She learned so quickly that Christmas I bought her her own machine. She took sewing in high school as well, excelling in her class! I’m trying to get my youngest granddaughter interesting in sewing too. Time will tell…
I love the pants you look fabulous. Great sewing tips too. Thank you.
401 not 404. Top off maintenance missing
So refreshing from all the other flat patterning vids out there.
Hi do you have a video on upscaling a pattern for a dress or top?
Hey! Thanks so much for this clear explanation. I have one question and I apologize if you said it but I didn’t get it. How do you know where to draw the vertical and horizontal slash lines or is that how you do it to enlarge any pant pattern? Thanks!
great video, sadky I found it really hard to hear you over that great music, x from the UK
Super helpful! I appreciate all these wonderful tips, especially for tricky pants!
Thank you for simplifying this for me!
It’s super flattering and I adore a good vintage suit!!!
Hi lovely video. I was hoping you could give me an advice. I own quite a few vintage patterns and they are quite fragile. Do you know of a method where i could professionaly get them reprinted and transferred into pdf? Thx
I don’t know of a professional company that does this, but I’m sure they’re out there . But you can check out this free pattern library to see if your patterns are on this resource already. www.vpll.org/
You look so cute! Cute outfit. Ill trying to make my own slopper. Thank you
Question is your center front the lenght of your skirt??
Yes!
What a lovely skirt. Fit is perfect

I have an inclination to hinge my pattern outward. I have tiny arms and tiny shoulders. I need to add 2in to the bust and 4in to the shoulders and arm holes the same size. I thinking about cutting it up the middle and hinging it out at the waist. I think it's a crazy enough idea it might work.
