If the prevailing geneticists' pet theory is correct - that all currently living decend from a Sub-Saharan African lady - & if the ol' unconstitutional 1-Drop Rule is applied as valid, then one can say that everyone alive is Black & their ancestors migrated from Africa; however, racial standards in African countries don't necessarily follow that old U.S. 1-Drop Rule; for, I heard tell that in South Africa one must be 100% Black to be considered Black, & if only partially of Black racial heritage, then one is labeled as Colored (whereas in the U.S. Black & Colored can mean the same thing - or at least this was so during & around the U.S. Civil War era). Every country's government that even tries to codify racial profiles has its own system of doing so; &, as for the opinions of individuals worldwide, opinions vary. An admixed individual not making mention of any particular race or ethnicity isn't necessarily a snub or sign of shame, but rather it's almost always a time-&-breath saver - & sometimes an alternative nomenclature is used that addresses all races or at least multiple prominent races because one doesn't want to discount any of one's ancestry by picking one race to the express exclusion of the others. Some folk want to tell Admix-Black folk that they're Black - period - while other folk want to tell Admix-Black folk that they aren't Black because they don't fit some labeler's idea of "being Black enough" (& those holding such a concept as valid don't all agree on what this concept even means). YHWH our God made all folk - & He always knows what He's doing; so, when it comes to races, they're all good. ✝️😎👍

I think Puerto Rican social identity is a complex one, being in general more European than neighboring populations, and most significantly a US territory which makes it unique within Latin culture. With all the pitched conflict over racial politics in the States, i think Puerto Ricans take an element of pride in their mixed heritage. It gives the culture a sense of being more advanced, without the stratified conflict we see in the States. Granted, PR and Latin America have their own issues with race and colorism, but I think in general that this legacy of mixed heritage gives us Puerto Ricans something to be proud of.

I am Puerto Rican and live in Puerto Rico. I do not deny my heritage, which is a mix of Taíno, Black, and European. We are proud of who we are, and we don’t think we’re something else. My grandfather was a Spaniard and my grandmother a Taíno Indian(which very few still exist). On my mother’s side, my grandfather was black and my grandmother mixed. We do not deny our heritage. We have a saying in Puerto Rico, “¿Y tu abuela dónde está? In other words, who’s your grandma?

The ONLY difference between a black American (born and raised in the United States) and a black Puerto Rican or a black Brazilian is a boat 🚢 stop! The ONLY difference is that the two were born in two different cultures! 💯💯💯

I am proud of my heritage. So don't stereotype. ALL OF US portoricans are a mix of African, Indigenous Taino, and Spanish heritage. So don't state that we all deny our heritage and/or blackness. Maybe some do it, but not all.

Puerto Ricans are scared to claim their African blood. In 1930 Col. Corneilius Rhodes (Active Duty) wrote the State Dept about how much he loved Puerto Rico excpet the Puerto Rican people. He started killing Islanders with cancer but it wasn't fast enough. PLANNED PARENTHOOD moved in and started sterilizing and aborting the "Dark" Islanders. They went through an ethnic cleansing and they are fearful (no disrespect).This is why they accept the rapist side. Right down to white Christ.

I'm happy that you mentioned the second school of thought, that maybe you're just descendants of Africans that traveled from Africa hundreds of years/ thousands of years ago and settled in North America and other continents all over this world. The reason why I'm happy you mentioned that is because I have done so much research of Aboriginal people to different lands even down to New Zealand and when you look at the true Aboriginal people their Black. And this is regarding the true Aboriginal people from each continent all over the world every single one of them are dark skined people and look like many of the tribes across Africa. What made me start looking was I was watching the TV show and the native Māori people of New zealand played a big part of the TV show, they even referred to themselves as Black, though they had different skin complexions their facial features look like Black people so I decided to look into who the Aboriginal people of New Zealand were and found they looked like me prior to racial mixture. So I began to research other Aboriginal cultures and found the same. To in this I'm just going to say at 1 time the Earth was connected and a lot of people failed to understand that so they don't understand how people can get from one space to another it's called walking, exploring and then settling where you feel comfortable... we still do it.

because in reality Puerto Rican people are not just black .and why Deny our European ancestry as well. and actually, the majority of Puerto Ricans are. just 13 percent black African and their blood line is mostly from the canary. island. white with north Africa and Berbers and native Guanche castellan Andalucía. African Americans are just Black because they have No knowledge of self. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Trinidadian, Brazilians etc., are their nationality 1st then amalgamated with African, European, and Indigenous Ancestry. Puerto Ricans and other diasporan peoples are more "Black" for lack of a better term, CULTURALLY, than African Americans. Their food, music, and familial values are African. African Americans on the other hand are the most Europeanized So-called Black people in the World.

I think you americans should mind your business and stop telling other countries what we are. Actually, my DNA test shows 15% Mali and 15%Senegal. As Puertorican, I also have dna from Latino American Indian, Spain, and Portugal. Portugal. So we are just Humans like everybody else.

I have seen many times in social media black people from the States saying to black latinos they aren’t really black or “African Americans” because they are mixed… Pretty sure that’s one big reason why many black Puerto Ricans here in the States rather identify as Afro Boricuas, and the light skinned just as Puerto Ricans instead of black or white because we don’t really fit in any of your “race” classifications. If we have light skin, we are still not white enough for white people and if we have brown/black skin we aren’t black enough for some of the black people. I have been even told the term “black” is exclusively for black American people 🤨 So instead of worrying how outsiders identifies, focus more on teaching your black American community about Afro Caribbean and Afro Latinos in general. Teach your people here to accept black Caribbean people. Hell I have even seen black American people saying “you are not black” to their own biracial and light skinned black Americans (not Latinos!), yet in my 42 years of life I have NEVER seen in the island a black Puerto Rican denying his or her being “negro” (that’s black in Spanish) or denying another fellow Puerto Rican to identify as negro because his skin is not black enough, and I’m born and raised there… I would focus more in your own social problems instead of telling other people how they should identify 🙄 Also not ALL Puerto Ricans have predominantly African features, and not ALL Puerto Ricans are a mix of Taino, African and Spanish; many Puerto Ricans are descendants of Portuguese, Italian, French , Asian and Jews immigrants who arrived later during early 1900s and late 1800s. Your pictures of how “all” Puerto Ricans look are way off. We have actual diversity and some of us are very racially ambiguous. My dad for example is ginger, white skin full of freckles and blue eyes, and my husband is blonde, white skin and green eyes, and they are not a rarity in the island and 💯 Puerto Ricans. We are a perfect blend and we are fine with that 🙄

To be honest, it's an honor to be African American and descendant of African continent. Who ancestors the Ancient Kemetic build the pyramids and temples in Egypt and after it failed, they migrated out to Central, South and West Africa. From there, we all know the story.
