    Thanks! I was wondering this exact thing, and there you were! One other question I have is about Royalty Share books. A lot of auditions I see are from people who are clearly self publishing (sometimes they don't even know how to spell or form a complete sentence >.<) and most often the budget is Royalty Share. I know that if this is a well-known author whose books are likely to sell this is a good deal, but for self published authors, this seems to be little more than a way to fleece the narrator out of a paycheck for recording something that nobody is going to buy, because even a 95% cut of $0 is still $0. Should I avoid these auditions? Or if I should take them on with discretion, what do I look for to know if this is a good idea or a waste of my time? Thanks!

    • @Voices4Learning
      @Voices4Learning 8 месяцев назад

      I only recorded for rs when I knew the book would sell (because I researched it on Amazon and the author's website), if I just wanted to record it because of the subject matter, I wanted the experience. The more you entrench yourself in the world of audiobooks, you'll know which books will sell and which won't.

  • @Isa_McRae
    @Isa_McRae 9 месяцев назад

    Thank you!! Susan, when submitting your audition, in addition to the message, do you say anything about price/rate at that point? They give a range, like $200-$400/pfh. Maybe you'd do the book for the high end of that range but not the low end. At what point do you state what you'll do it for?

  • @Isa_McRae

    Excellent information. Thank you!! Susan, when you do closing credits for an audiobook, do you assign them their own file? Meaning, after I say "The End" at the end of the book, do I then say the Title/Author/Narrated by/Copyright info directly following "The End", or is it expected that closing credits will be their own file like the opening credits?

    • @Voices4Learning
      @Voices4Learning 9 месяцев назад

      Closing credits are their own file. I usually name it NameofBook_CC.mp3. For example, the last book I recorded is called Sedona Soul Stretch. So all my files are named SSS_ SSS_OC.mp3 (opening credits) SSS_00.mp3 (preface, front matter) SSS_01.mp3 (chapter 1) SSS_CC.mp3 (closing credits)

    Susan, when recording an audiobook, do you record each chapter in an individual track or record straight through in your primary RAW track (perhaps noting chapter locations with markers) and separate the chapters after processing the whole thing as one big long track in RX?

    • @Voices4Learning
      @Voices4Learning 9 месяцев назад

      Typically I create a new song (file) for each chapter. But if it's a short book, then I just record in one song and then uses markers to denote the chapters.

    Hi, would I need to purchase rights for a RUclips video that is purely fiction/entertainment? (Very insightful video 😊)

    • @Voices4Learning
      @Voices4Learning 9 месяцев назад

      Not necessarily. The voice actor may charge for "digital rights." This industry changes pretty fast. If the video is made for purely educational purposes with just the aim of education and not making money, then you wouldn't need to pay for rights. But in the RUclips realm, any video can be monetized. So, personally I would include a small "digital rights" fee. I wouldn't be litigious about it, though--maybe a $10 fee.

    9:15 actually the peak level isn't that. The peak level limit, in reality, is -0.1 dB because going to 0 dB in digital audio introduces clipping artifacts which ruin the sound of the recording. ACX standards are set at -3.0 dB for extra "headroom" so that, when they encode the file in different ways, there is virtually no chance that the peak levels will go above -0.1 dB and ruin the sound with clipping artifacts. Peak level has absolutely nothing to do with human toleration. As far as not blowing out your listeners eardrums, that is more related to RMS levels. If they listen to one standard audiobook at -18 RMS, and you brickwall limit your recording to -6 RMS, that is about 4x as much sound energy and, depending on the user's volume settings, it might be jarringly loud at best. It's also worth mentioning that -18 RMS is not some perfect standard. Music on streaming services is often around -14 RMS (though they do not use RMS as a standard) and a lot of people will turn off Spotify limiters and listen to their music around -6 RMS, though that number depends on how loudly that artist's music is mastered. You might have noticed that I never said that -6 RMS will blow your ears out and indeed it won't blow your ears out. It's just a different loudness level. Volume settings on your device are king. So then why is the ACX standard the way it is? One big reason is because if it is too quiet, some devices will be too quiet to hear the audiobook in a noisy environment like while walking next to a road or something. That being the case, you have to make it loud but what is the problem with it being too loud? Well there are a lot of potential problems. Music chooses somewhere around -14 RMS and that is a decent standard. When you have a voice only audio file though, it starts to sound unnatural even with the most transparent processing to make it that loud without the peak level being too high. -18 RMS is the upper limit because of the "dynamic range" of solo human voice audio. You could go higher but it is a disadvantageous tradeoff between preserving dynamic range (naturalness) and loudness. Also if you want bonus points and you have multiple different narrators, especially if they are different genders, consider confirming to ACX standards at the same time as measuring LUFS instead of just RMS. There are too many times where the chapters read by females are louder and I have to adjust volume between chapters because, while the RMS is the same, the perceived loudness (measured fairly accurately by LUFS) is different. And that's the real reason to conform to loudness standards like this: it's bad if users have to ride their volume setting.
