I live in the Republic of China in Taiwan and when I was young, military service was mandatory. I spent two years 1991-1993 in the army as a drill corporal. My works were training awkward civilians into combat-ready infantry within two months. Some of my trainees were sent to Kimen or Matsu islets, roughly 10 km off the coastline of the authoritarian People's Republic of China(PRC) which repeatedly threatens to invade the democratic Republic of China with force. The two islets aforementioned were bombarded by PRC with heavy artillery from the 1950s to 1970s and many fatalities resulted from the artillery attacks. So I really understand what the lyrics " I watched a bunch of soldiers heading for the war , I could hardly even bear to see them go. " mean.
