VW overland Baja Bug build on a budget. Join us as we transform a worn out 1960 VW Beetle into a reliable vehicle for overland travel. Definitely not your normal build for overlanding, but we are taking a practical and common sense approach to building out this Baja Bug.

Custom VW Engine Build for our Mini Overland Project

Our Baja Bug overland build gets a high performance VW engine custom built for it! We head out to Seward Speed Shop, talk to the engine builder about what HP parts he put in to it. We'll also see and hear it fired up for the first time! Then we bring it back to our shop and install it in the Bug. Not without a mishap or two though.

Really enjoyed your video. Exhaust fumes may be getting into the cabin through the channels in the roof where the dome light attaches. Those channels continue into the engine Bay Area. I stuffed microfiber towels into both channels by the engine and it really helped.
A heavy coat of Rain X on the windshield will take care of the wiper problems.. you won't even need em.. put a refrigerator magnet over the hole and see if that will slow down the leak... If it doesn't, there's always caulking of some sort.. Enjoyed your video trip.. I'm looking to build me a Baja as well... Take care my friend and God Bless....
I've been driving bugs when I was a kid in Phoenix... On the subject of oil pressure it was just pretty much regular thing to come up to a stop light And the oil pressure idiot light would be flickering And they're set to about 3-5 PSI..... in a bug would run forever as long as you didn't Hammer the clutch too much.... that's the weak spot on them bugs that thrust main bearing on the flywheel

Hope heater is better than most Vevor products. Things that I have purchased have been very disappointing. Sheet metal has been very thin and packaging was terrible. Sheet metal bent and unusable. 😢

Holley has a “laser” (like $99) fuel sender that will work with your current fuel gauge. Just cut a hole in your current gas tank and be done.
Wolfsburg west sells the 12v wiper motor armature that replaces the 6v one in your bug. You keep everything that you have, just change out the armature.
We were about to go that route, then found a "67 12v two speed on TheSamba. We lucked out!
I’m liking the engine build stuff. I’m considering a 1914 with a larger PICT type carb to keep it looking stock and driving well. I have a very stock but lowered 67 sedan

Not sure where you’re located, but they’re are plenty of VW places to get parts. Check out Chirco performance out of Tucson AZ. Also Nevada off Road Buggy out of Vegas. There’s plenty of other places in California to get parts.

No RPM's were harmed in the making of this video....
aluminum alloys as21 and as41 - your guy said the 21 has "higher aluminum content than magnesium content". that's a big NO. the 41 and 21 refer to the amount of alloying metals in the magnesium. the 4 and 2 refer to the percent of aluminum. the 1 refers to the percent of siicon. the alloys have very similar mechanical strength properties as one would expect as they are 97 and 95 percent magnesium. i hope you didn't pay up too much for that case.
