How Konnyaku Starch changed everything about Momigami
I wasn't sure if I'd ever try Konnyaku (Konjac) Starch. It sounded like a hassle, messy, complicated, and unnecessary, but I wanted stronger paper for my slow-stitching projects. I have to say the results were nothing like I expected!
Momigami-or kneaded paper-is an ancient Japanese technique that transforms ordinary paper into something soft, durable, and fabric-like. I've always used hand lotion, but the idea of using Konnyaku starch was a game-changer I almost missed. Check it out and see if it is worth the effort.

What is it that you call high points?😊
I'm referring to the high vs low points of the Momigamied paper. The crinkles of the paper create what I call "mountains," high points, and "valleys," low points of the crinkle structure. I hope this makes sense. If not, please let me know, and I'll try to better explain myself... ☺
Have to ask, what are papers used for?
I've been asked this a lot. Many people use them for collage, junk journals, etc. However, I have made jewelry and notebooks similar to Field Notes and a notebook similar to a matchbook! I'm now starting to sew on them and make little purses. I have so many ideas. You can do many things based on how you treat the paper for Momigami. Please look at some of my videos as I'm trying to build a library of everything you can do with these cool papers. Thank you so much for asking. Would love to see what you make! Have a great day!
I wondered about your paper. I have made some of my own paper and have not used it much. I am glad you mentioned it as I may dig out some of the pieces I have made. Though I like the color, black and white is a favorite of mine. Thank you for your experimentation. I just did my first batch and looking forward to doing more! Thank you.
@@louisebacon-ogden5032 you're very welcome. I love experimenting and it sounds like you do too. Thank you for sharing.

Awesome!! I'm so happy you like it. I use mine all the time and I made one for my Dad too! He loves it! You are very welcome.
Thanks for the tutorial

What do u do with this
The paper is stronger and can actually be sewn by hand or machine. I plan to make some jewelry with this fabric paper. But you can make book covers, lamp shades, mixed-media, collages, and the list goes on. I have additional videos on my channel of things you can do with momigami. Would love to hear what you make.

Is it necessary to paint? And do they need to be sealed? Thank you.🌸
Hi Marianne. I don't think it is necessary to paint; however, I do think it is necessary to seal. Especially since it will be around water. Air-dry clay is not like ceramics. It will break down with repeated exposure to water. I love to paint mine with acrylic paints just for the color. You could use any sealant. I like Modge Podge or Makers Magic. I prefer a satin finish. There are gloss and matte finishes, too. Happy creating!! Would love to see what you make! Thanks for asking.
Thank you so much for all your tips and tricks. I found this very helpful, much appreciated 👏 ❤

Will any magazine work?
@@bruno1285 I’ve never tried but I’ve been told no. It works best with old National Geographic’s due to the ink quality used when printing. I had old magazines given to me and these are the ones in the video. National Geographic has very high quality printing and paper in their magazines, thus the Citra Solv seems to make the ink “melt” in unusual and organic ways. I hope that helps. If you find out it works for you on other magazines I would love to know. Thanks so much.
So cool
Thank you so much for sharing this earring design. I have soooooooo many handmade papers . It's nice to have a different way to use them.. I am also a Special Ed. Teacher. this would be great to do with my students to work on their fine motor skills. What would be the smallest square to use with students? I would truly appreciate your input. Thank you again. @@jilllederer9628 you are very welcome! I have so many papers too and have to find fun ways to use them!! I have so many more ideas to share. I love that you are a Special Ed teacher. It would be great to do with them. I’m primary caretaker for my parents and have made stuff with my Dad! It’s awesome to share creative projects! As far as smallest, it’s hard to say. I would start with a large square 2-3 inches until the get the knack of folding. It gets real easy as you get familiar. Then take the size down to no smaller than 1 inch for earrings. The larger size can be used for a necklace. Sounds like an awesome project! Let me know how it goes!! Vicki
Awagami paper woukd work well for this. I suppose the paper you use would be very important as most would rip. Those are lovely. So you didnt add anything to your ink and water solution?
Oh, I see you already suggested that. Thanks for the shout out. I made the comment before I watched the whole thing.
@@creativepassages I plan to purchase Awagami paper and do some experiments. I didn’t add anything to the ink and water.
@@creativepassages Yep. I want to give this paper a try. I haven’t forgotten about your traditional art to digital file request either. I appreciate your support. It’s fun to learn from each other.
@@CreativeRiseArt I agree. Thanks.
Nice process, i love it !!! I did 't with olive oil but after the process it is very greasy to use ! Do you do something to finish ? Greetings from Belgium😊
Thank you! Hi in Belgium! I found the olive oil to be too greasy too. I have not, yet, added any finishes to my papers. However, I have used Modge Podge on my Momigami, Origami, earrings. It works nicely. I am experimenting with making DIY Pocket Notebooks with my Momigami papers and will probably add a finish to the cover. So happy you enjoyed the process. T😀
I can’t understand why you are using water?
ruclips.net/video/KfZncaLtBO4/видео.htmlsi=FVS6mC3sVhpUrfVo
@@lzrd8460 It was an experiment based on another video I saw. I’ll post a link to the video. They used pure ink and I didn’t have enough ink to fill the container. That’s why I was using water.

cool idea, i've been wondering what to do with mine!
Thanks. I know what you mean. I was on a Momigami-making mission. LOL!! It's so fun to experiment. I have a couple other projects coming up too!
If you have alcohol inks & want to try a cool abstract marbled effect, make a water bath a few cm deep & drop a couple of drops of alcohol ink on top of the water. Different colours & brands behave a bit differently, but the resin sets really quickly, so you can gently blow or gently swirl it with a skewer & then place your copier or other paper on top & the colour will stick to it & absorb in. I used normal copier paper & 200 GSM J Burrows Digital Copier paper & both worked well. The Digital Copier paper is treated with something to make inks more vibrant & it’s a smooth paper, but anything made for ink should be fine. Even just a slightly heavier gsm than normal copier paper so it holds up better to water. I dried them in a cool oven because it was night time, but in the sun or air drying should be fine. You can add more than one colour at a time & they will usually show as separate colours so you can get a multi-coloured marble effect, and you can try metallic & Pearl colours, but they will tend to blob & sink mainly, rather than spread like the other colours do. I never tried a mica spray though. They still look cool, especially if you break them up with a skewer, but you won’t get nice long streaks of metallics/pearl colours because they have more resin. The colour will tend to only stick to one side, so I sink the paper fully & try to get the colour that gets pushed to the side to stick to the edges of the back of the page, or I double dipped them. By dropping a few drops in one section of the water bath, I got a cool full rose bloom effect. The colours will be a bit different to how they turn out on yupo paper - I found them quite bright. But it’s a really easy way to get interesting marbled papers. I used Ranger Alcohol Inks, Jacquard Piñata Inks & a cheap Chinese set I bought via AliEx or something & I found that they tended to vary how much they spread & mixed or mingled by colour rather than brand. The cheapies actually worked well for creating a softer abstract spread, but I’d say try any you have. You could also try crumpling the paper first, as they had different patterns & only stuck where there were no bubbles, so when you drop the page in, plop it down flat on the surface, don’t slide it in, then sink the page from the middle to push any air bubbles out the sides. If you need to clean up any leftover ink, just run your skewer through the water & it will stick to it. Enjoy 😁 I look forward to seeing a video on it if you do try it
Awesome allisonjames2923. This sounds fun. I've been experimenting and will definitely look into creating a video based on your comment. I just love hearing about others experiences. Thank you for taking time out and sharing your knowledge. I will have to see what I have on hand and give it a try. So fun!! Have a great day!
I just played with a similar technique using coffee & then Distress Spray Inks & Oxides & am waiting for my pages to dry. Instead of uncreasing the paper when it’s wet, let it dry crumpled & the colour is more likely to collect in the creases. I’ve found a slightly heavier paper than copier paper works much better too. I’m trying some J Burrows 120GSM Digital paper. I also tried some Calligraphy paper that is smooth on one side & rough on the other & I thought that would disintegrate, but I have high hopes for it - didn’t tear at all & I scrunched it tightly! Will let you know if it works.
I, too, just saw a video about leaving your paper crumbled when drying. Great minds think alike! Thanks for sharing this info. I will be trying this, too! I also saw a video about using tracing paper. I think it becomes like Glassine paper. I haven't tried it yet but it might be something you have already done or would like to try too. Thank you again for sharing such cool ideas.

@@giuliettawebber6772 I’ve asked myself that same question. That's why I'm trying to create additional videos of “What to do with your Momigami papers.” The process is so fun and easy that you can make a lot of papers. Try awagami paper. When I first bought that paper and researched it, they suggested dipping it in water with inks or paints and crumple. I put chalk paint in the water and maybe a drop of acrylic. @@CreativeRiseArt you too. I don't typically rise this early; I'm usually a night person, but it's slowly reversing.
I’m definitely with you on the awagami paper. Also Sumi inks work well. I have started learning Sumi e and have an abundance of the inks now. Also they didn’t soak the paper in the water in the video. There was more water so they could actually put both hands in and scrunch the paper underneath for a very short time before pressing it between newspaper. If using Sumi inks, wear gloves. I wonder how long it took for them to wash their hands 😂.
I want to learn suminigashi.

I heard from somewhere ( I think Froyle Art) that only certain years work for the National Geographic. Also, temperature and humidity play a huge role. I tried it in winter over a year ago, and it didn't work, but perhaps I'll try again this summer.
I think you are right about Froyle Art. I've tried all years with no difficulty, but then again National Geo has been around forever. Due to the mess I only create these papers in the summer, so I don't know about the temp and humidity. It's a great point to remember. I like your " loser" pink and brown one better than the first. I guess it's a matter of preference. Perhaps, I missed it, but what did you add to your water tub aside of the inks, and you said that smaller clear container is "dishwater"- is that water with dish soap? I bought some Kodac photoflow to use and thought of trying methyl cellulose as well. I bought a container, but it's only large enough to fit smaller paper. I'm collecting more information before I start, but it will probably be within the next month.
Haha. I think you're right about the pink and brown one. It is preference. I wanted it to be brighter...LOL! I used a couple drops of Dawn dish soap in a small container with water. I have heard of people using this too. There are so many different ways to do these techniques. Look forward to seeing and hearing about your experiences.
@Carry_Your_Message the methyl cellulose is an adhesive that is very safe, flexible, non- toxic, has no oder is archival, etc. It is primarily used in book binding.
