Triumph Scrambler 400X Review | Scrambler Adventure Bike

Recently I was lucky enough to be invited by Triumph Australia to the launch of the NEW Scrambler 400X! I was expecting that the bike would be 'good, for a learner bike' but it was SO good that it blew me away - the paper specs don't do justice to the way the bike FEELS! I really loved this video m8. Great overnighter. Great ride. Great vibe with friends. I haven't done too much offroad with my XE yet, mainly due to trying to pick it up in the sand when I did. Of the bikes I have, I think I enjoy this one the most, but I wish the saddle was more comfortable for long rides. I also really appreciated seeing your luggage setup. I've seen some frames for paniers on both sides, and the make the bike look crap, so I haven't gotten there, but I really think your setup is prefect without ruining the lines and ride of the bike. Thanks for this. Really inspiring.
Map overlay may be simplified by choosing std coordinate corner vertices .... ~60% matching might be time consuming....⏹️📈📉

Cheers mate Great review all the way from Scunthorpe England
Leg saver name to search inside the link (Scrambler XC/XE Leg Saver MAX Plus V2)
This is not a change? Its a top up
Can you explain how the slash cuts with a decat on a 2023 can damage the bike. Just curious
I'm 20M and from India. This is my first bike, and I'm picking it up in a day or two. I can't wait! Here, the bike cost around ₹254,596 + ₹50,000 for insurance and registration. (That's about 4600 AUD + 900 AUD).
"Pulls long and hard" , yeah I'm single too and can attest to that .
Just picked up a 2019. Love the bike and your vids are very informative and pretty good quality. Well done mate. And thanks.
I'm surprised that the sump guard doesn't cover the Oil filter, on the 900 scrambler it covers it full.
Yes 3D maps not a problem any more Thanks
Nice! You’re my height and you tamed the beast. I recently got back into riding and was a bit intimidated by the 1200XE seat height, so I went with the Speed Twin 900. Probably going to keep the twin forever, but I have my eyes on a scrambler for sure. I ride for the same reasons as you ; thanks for sharing all of this context and your stories. Happy riding!
For beginners no use, too fast.
Loved the series! Do you think the 1200 is okay for a first bike? I'm quite tall, 6ft 5in (American, sorry 😅) and like the seat height of XE. I don't find a lot of bikes that I like that fit me. I've always been obsessed with the T120s and Scramblers. I don't plan on doing the type of off-roading that you do, so I'm curious if a newbie could handle this thing just fine.
Great question - I would say if you’re not confident it’s probably a bit much for a beginner, BUT the scrambler 400X is actually a bit bigger than the T100/120’s so maybe take one for a test ride if you can?
@@lifeofascrambler sounds good! Thank you
Awesome review, mate!!!!!!
Nicely. I’m in the process of doing some of these exact mods. Awesome video brother. Can I ask have you thought about wrapping the exhaust to minimize heat? 😎🙏
OK. I'll buy you coffee. How do I do that? I want to know how you reveal the blue line...
No worries I’ve got a link there - if you buy me a coffee and mention your name I’ll respond with a comment telling you how!
I just completed 8000KM on the Scrambler 400x. Did a fair amount of off-roading. I think it's more than what you bargained for.
Awesome how was it!?
Spend more cash in 1200 Xe for all Road trips include medium offroad.. or spend less on 400x? Compare 2 bikes plsss
Great concept, let me pitch it to triumph and see where it goes! 😅🤗
Mate, I rarely get to the end of video on RUclips and think "I actually thoroughly enjoyed that". Awesome series and highly likely I'll buy a Scrambler 1200 now!
Glad you liked it thanks for watching! I really appreciate you taking the time to give me good feedback too, it’s a lot of effort but it makes my day when I’ve helped someone in some way!
Neat. Wouldn't really call this a tutorial though.
There’s plenty out there I just wanted to give an overview. Happy to chat about any custom animations / maps you might need!
TBH I think it is one of the best all arounders if you want a classic style bike... especially for us tall folks.
Agreed! And I’m a small folk!
Cool videos!! Do videos about helmets for scramblers
Thanks! I’ll put that on my ‘to do’ list!
Sweeeet....Thanks
For the rear shock before you take the measurement you need to lift the bike up off the ground. Then lower back to ground, sit on it and then do your 1/3 preload. You don't take the first measurement with the bike weight compressing the spring.
Hey mate just stumbled across your channel. I'm hoping to get a 1200xe sooner or later. Just curious as to what your fuel range is and do you carry extra fuel? I'm thinking if I run a single rack on the left I could put a rotopax there.
Glad you stumbled here 🤗 fuel range varies a lot depending on the type of riding. On a highway I get 230km+ (haven’t pushed past that, maybe could push for 250~km maybe in good conditions. Off-road is generally less but I’ve never run out of fuel, I’ve always been able to get to a fuel station. Rotopax are a good range extender I’ve had a few mates use them on other bikes across the desert. What sort of trips are you planning?!
@@lifeofascrambler I'm currently riding a honda cb500x which can get 450km to a tank if I baby it (its great bike but it's lacking that excitement factor). Im in northern rivers NSW so up and down the Gibraltar range, a few camps, I'd like to ride to Phillip Island for the gp and also go north to Cape York eventually.
Realistically though most of my rides are local or semi local blasts. Also, I really like the idea of a social garage. Wish there was one close to me.
Question what year is this bike with broken frame? So your repair was aluminum weld? I inspected my 2022 and it is a steel frame. Checked with magnet many areas. So was a frame change occur or is a US model steel?
I think I answered this in your Facebook comment!
New Subscriber. Picking up my new 2023 XE Scrambler on June 19. Watching all of your videos and looking forward to getting my bike. You have the best and most informative videos so far! Quick question: If I remove cat and replace with straight pipes that provide proper back pressure will bike have to be retuned? Sorry but also, where is Episode 3 of your three part series? Thank you.
What are your thoughts on how this compares to the Honda SCL500?
That's what I'm wanting to know as well. I definitely think the 400x looks better, it's cheaper to buy, it comes stock with all of the cool ( cosmetic ) accessories skid plate, handguards etc. But the Honda has about a 2" lower seat height ( 31" ) which is important to me for comfort at 5'8" short. It has a long proven reliable, bulletproof engine with very long service intervals. The Trans is geared more usable as well as the engine producing focused low end/midrange power; as opposed to the 400x focus on top end power. The SCL500 already has tons of available aftermarket accessories available too. In Kentucky where I live there aren't even any 400x bikes available to even checkout in person, the local triumph dealer does carry the 400 speed in-stock tho ( which I don't want ). Both the orange and the green SCL are available at multiple dealers near me...I do believe I'm going to go with the SCL500. The 400x is truly a damn good looking bike in videos and pics tho! The nearest ones to me I could have delivered even are minimum of 400 miles away... + a healthy shipping fee! Also the Honda only weighs about 20 pounds more, but also has about 8 more horse power with a smoother riding twin cylinder. Anyway, there's my 2 cents on it lol 😂
@@michaelwhitehouse5659 thanks bro! The triumph certainly looks better, but the Honda reliability would be hard to pass up on. I have both near me fortunately. I just wish the Honda had better colors.
Great video bro ❤, Loved the review from a fellow scrambler rider, I booked this bike last week only and have watched every single review, the way u explained every part made me even more excited, cant wait to get this one(manifesting triumph makes spoke wheels for this one in the future 😅)
Great info. I will wait two years before buying one. Then they have things fixed i hope. Until then: honda cl 500 scrambler. Greetings from Germany.
Cant believe homie did that with the stock tires on the Scrambler
Yeah he did well! He’s a legend, you should check him out @wheelsandwander
Being riding for 3 years and i got my scram400x 2 weeks ago, and im loving it, excellent for commute and such a joy on the trails!! I dont see myself wanting anothere bike for at leas a couple of years!! If you want a all around bike that looks awesome, don't look any further!!
The annoying feature of all those camera slow pans and elevation shots and highly disciplined colour grade along with evocative beats is it makes what is a semi luxury consumer good appear within the luxury range. This is maybe be why house holds debt is so high, but hey, I won't regret buying this bike once I ride it.
Great review but better yet, glad to hear your mental health is better. Cheers mate!
Do you have a link to purchase these Pegz?
Yes indeed! pivotpegz.com/products/copy-of-triumph-2019-2020-scrambler-1200-xe-xc
You’ve done some sweet mods there. Thanks for the walk-through of what you’ve done.
Does that exhaust make it impossible to have someone ride with you on the pillion?
Dosnt work when trying to upload from my maps to earth studio. So annoying
This was awesome, just did it myself with your help. Thank you!
On the front forks there is a place to adjust with a screwdriver, there is also a nut you can adjust with a socket. What does the nut adjust ?
Good pickup! Working on an update to this video, but the nut does apparently adjust preload, but it’s only covered in some workshop manuals (post 2022 I think) so it’s unclear if that’s across all year models or not. Best bet is to mark where it is, and try turning it to see how it affects your suspension. Try putting a zip tie around the fork lower, compress the shocks and it should slide down and stay in place. Then turn the nut and compress them again - if they push it down further you’re reducing preload, if it stays put then you’re likely increasing preload!
@@lifeofascrambler : thank you
I had that leg saver in the middle between the heat shield installed on my 2019 XC, but it is no longer necessary on my 2022 XE… I got the 900 and 400 also and the heat is part of the high pipe Scramblers (well not the 400 here since they knowingly put a low exhaust on to avoid the issue)… anyway the high exhaust is a styling exercise… I fully bought the bikes knowing about the heat from the high pipes on the right side and you can feel the heat from the cylinders on the other side… really a non issue for me anymore…
Who’s the singer?!?
Can’t remember off the top of my head but the song is listed in the video as it starts playing
Great sound and amazing bike! Do you know if a pillion can ride without a lot of heat from the slash cut? Also for the newer models the cat is in the rear and gets removed if you these pipes on, leaving only the baffles to reduce sound. Any advice on how to lower the db's for a straight pipe? Does packing/wrapping actually lower the soubd much for example? Thanks for all the great content!
I would say the bike becomes a single seater when you do the slash cut exhaust mod 🤗 unless you put an extra shield on for the pillion. Regarding sound, I’ve got another video on exhausts so check that out for more info.
Brother, Waiting for more videos..
Such a sexy bike...gotta be the Best scrambler motorcycle made too date....
Thanks for the efforts putting this together. I'm holding out hope Relive starts to allow route visualisations without having to actually do the trip. That would be a much more dynamic, easier to produce route visualisation if they offered that feature. I'd pay for it and I'm sure others would also.
“Happiness is measured in memories”, very well said. I’ve really enjoyed the 3 part series- you’ve done an awesome job. I’m looking forward to watching more of your vids. Sending my best wishes from Wales/UK 👍🏼
Thanks so much I’m glad you appreciated it! I think that line sums up how I feel about the bike 🤗
What jacket and pants are you using for this video?
Akin Stealth jeans (Kevlar + armour) and a Triumph ‘Beck’ waxed jacket
Picking up my 1200 xe this week and you’ve quickly become my go to channel for tips tricks and quality content!!! Cheers 🍻
