    I like the idea of the punch card to encourage returning books. Are you keeping those in the library?

    • @postitsandpens
      @postitsandpens 5 дней назад

      Yes, they'll be kept in their teacher's pouch. After I check in that class' books, I'll pull out the cards for the students who turned their books in and give them the hole punch.

    Do you teach them how to use every single bin? If so how do you do that?

    • @postitsandpens
      @postitsandpens 7 дней назад

      I did, yes! Our district used apps on the computers that were mandatory, so I'd have them work on those while I pulled the students from each group to show them each of their activity choices. As I changed them out throughout the year, I'd do a quick mini-lesson with the group or groups as needed, usually in place of one of my small reading groups. If an activity was available for all of the groups, then I'd just do a mini-lesson with the whole class before we started centers.

      It depends! Each story I read to them has a different focus. I do a lot of story elements, retelling, compare/contrast, etc. I also do some STEM challenges.

    Hi! Thank you for your helpful library videos. When you mention not allowing library books to be taken home, I am guessing that means they can still take them out of the library but have to keep them at school in their desk?

    • @postitsandpens
      @postitsandpens 28 дней назад

      Hello! Yes, that's exactly what I mean! Most teachers in the building send home books with their students each day, so they are getting to bring things home to read. The school library book would just need to stay at school in their desks or book boxes. :)

    • @postitsandpens
      @postitsandpens 2 месяца назад

      So the students had folders that were provided by the school. I had them keep those in their chair pockets, and then I'd place all their papers/notes/whatever in their mailboxes. They also would put any papers from their Specials classes in their mailbox as they entered the room. Part of their packup routine was to empty their mailbox and put their papers in their folders. It worked pretty well for us once I taught the routine and we practiced a few times.

    Well Merin, Back when I was a young autistic school student, I talked out as well. Talking is habitual in a public setting for all so quit trying to take it away from the students. Instead, give them free talking time. When you allow them to talk freely they start running out of things to talk about and in the end you are opening them up to being talked to. Also, If the students are interested in the lessons or the story that you are giving them it takes away a lot of the disruptions but if the students are not interested, bury it because that is your highest risk of disruptions and off task behaviors. Again, I did off task things and talked out before and that's why I am telling you this. My Parents appreciate the other students who put up with me and allowed me to be a little of me at school but I could never invite all of them to my house for a hang out or a birthday party. Kids are so tied down everyday in school but it's the only place where they get to see their friends but when the kids are more do what they do at home they are separated from all of their friends and being reduced to the little clique at home. Everyone goes through some sort of dilemma in school regardless if you are teaching or the students. With that said, kudos to you for not being a whiny teacher and attempting more to take on more things yourself and being willing to ask for help when the help is needed the most. Also, Tip: Is there a way that you can have 2 calm down spots instead of just one calm down spot? One for your "classes" and the other or other teachers' classes. Sometimes, every student needs a "safe spot" to go to sometimes if you know what I mean. Also, Reward System (Punch Cards) = Good call. Give them something to look forward to. And OOOOOOOOH YES, DO limit your library books to keeping them in school only. Your risk of getting them back at least at the end of the school year is higher without it turning more consequential towards the students. For now, take some time to allow Ms. Bears some hibernation time and just be cool, calm, collected and sweet Merin Bears this summer. - Dwight

    One thing I did each fall at the beginning of the year. I would have an open house for the teachers. I would display all the new books and materials, plus anything I think needed to be highlighted. There would be plenty of sticky notes around so that teachers could indicate what materials they were interested in. Then we (I had an assistant) would photocopy the cover and give a copy to requesting teachers. When the teachers wanted the item they just left us the photocopy so we could locate the item, check it out and deliver it, along with the photocopy. I also suggested they photocopy the cover or title page of any item that they like using with a unit every year. This helped eliminate the I want the little pink book I use with letter writing every year. Teachers could just leave us the stack of photocopies, we would locate the books, check them out, and deliver, sometimes they came to pick up.

    I just finished Sisters of the Lost Nation - it worked really well for me, but I think that's because I was able to read it pretty much straight through in a couple of days. That tends to keep me more in the story and increases my chances of enjoying a mystery/thriller. If I have to stop and start too many times, I lose track of what's happening in a book like this that hops around in time so much, so I get what you're saying about the structure. I read A River Enchanted earlier in the year and I'm really looking forward to A Fire Endless. You've really sold me on Akata Witch!

    Just curious, why are you not allowed to show students names? Isn't it just their first names? I want to make a video of my class set up this year (1st Time), so I just want to know what the rules are about this because I haven't see where we aren't allowed. I only use names on the desk plates for the most part and numbers and colors elsewhere. I don't want to have to change names on everything each year. By the way, I love your classroom!

      I just always try to err on the side of caution. I don't get permission from parents to share anything regarding their children online, and even though it would just be a first name, some students have very unique names that would be easy (or easier) to track down for anyone who got it into their heads to do so.

      Yep, definitely! It's something that's talked about a lot with the Nancy Drew (and Hardy Boys) books. I personally want to read the originals, though, because in many cases the actual plot of the story was changed to "modernize" it a bit more, and I want the mysteries to be what was originally intended.

    I have heard really good things about Nick Medina. Sisters of a Lost Nation has been on my wishlist for a while. I hope you have a wonderful month and are able to get through a lot of the books you need to.

    Merin, Tip: Rules mean NOTHING without reinforcers. I started following you when you were a classroom teacher and given that you have added some of those elements of teaching into the library under your watch you should have instituted a behavior management scheme too and specifically when the year is winding down on everyone and the summer energy is in the air which means some of those students are probably trying to make last minute memories with their friends before summer. Remember. No behavior management means no teaching. With that said, yes I do enjoy your videos because I'd rather be talking about the interesting elements of school experiences versus some other things happening in our country. - Dwight

    Little Woman was hard for me to get through. It took me a couple months, but I am really glad I pushed through as I really enjoyed it. I hope your reads go well. Have a great month.

    So many people, myself included, were in a slump March. It is like the atmosphere was all wrong for reading. Let's hope April is better!

    Hello! I have a rowdy (an understatement) 5th-grade class in the Library on Wednesdays. Any suggestions for lessons?
