Wait… what does the Fraud Squad do? When dealing with fraudsters, by the time it is reported to law enforcement, it can often be too late. Your bank or credit union, retail business and your friends and family play an important ‘heroic’ role in catching fraud. The goal in collaborating is to communicate prevention measures clearly and consistently. Additionally, we want to take any shame and em...

On October 31, 2019 for the 8 hour span between roughly 5:00am and 1:00pm we recorded 20 crashes and 13 cars in the ditch within the Sheriff's Office jurisdiction. While this was average amount for a snow day, and we had a lot of help dealing with these crashes, this was an atypical day in general. Of course, the early snowfall date itself it noteworthy, and we don’t think people appropriately ...

The Deputy says "Holy S&$^", so please be warned. Do not watch if you do not want to hear a cuss word. But the raw human emotion is compelling, so we didn't bleep it out. The Deputy, and the other occupants of the other vehicles, only suffered very minor injuries.

    I think there should be a policy put in place that requires any emergency vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, and police, to have there emergency lights on when they drive on to the freeway when roads start to become slick or snow fall start to reduce visibility by a certain percentage as like a pile up prevention, even if there not responding to an emergency.

    God Bless you all, I drove a 18 wheel truck over the road for 16 years, and thank the Lord, I never saw one of these however in 2008 I believe it was, I was traveling East on I-70, about 45 minutes in the Colorado line, at 4 am we passed several signs overhead stating "Winter Driving Conditions", it was not snowing, the roads were clear, however as they do, and soon to find out there were several spots of black ice, I was the first truck, I had two cars behind me, one more truck behind them, and one more car then one more truck. There were no plows or salt trucks to be seen at all not through out the rest of the night, or even prior to the entrance of Colorado, we were traveling I will say between 60 and 70 miles an hour, when I came up on a car in front of me, he must have been going 20 miles an hour, I moved to the left lane and passed by them, I came back over to the right after some distance, when I realized we were definitely on black ice at that time, when I moved back over the tractor came over but the trailer did not, at this point my truck and trailer were parallel with each other, stretched across both left and right lanes, the only thing that I could think at the moment was, was I going to slide off the right side of the road or the left, I removed my foot from the fuel and attempted to bring the trailer back behind the truck, I just let it slide without braking or steering, finally in decreased speed, I got down to about 25 miles an hour and the trailer finally came over to the right side of the road, and I was straight again, I then pulled to the side of the road, as I had both my kids in the truck with me at the time. I collected myself and took notice of my surroundings, I found myself out there with not another soul around, all those folks that were behind me, were no longer anywhere to be seen. I called dispatch, as I was only about 45 mins from my delivery, dispatch told them what had happened and immediately he let me know that they wanted me off the road and that they would reschedule. This was fine but where was I going to go, if I tried the off or on ramps I would surely slide off them, I knew there was a rest area only 9 miles up the road, but at now 5 am, I was not going to find a parking spot, so I figured I would just go ahead and creep along until I found a safe spot to pull far enough off the road without fear of being smashed into. I released my brakes then noticed the center lines started passing me, hell, I was sliding backward now, with having only 27000 lbs on the trailer, I was pretty light, and this was not going to end well if I didn't counter act. So I stomped on the fuel, we bounced and swerved a bit, but the truck started rolling, I got back onto the interstate and drove for probably 5 miles when I noticed another truck parked on the on ramp as I drove by, so at the end of the ramp, I pulled over to the shoulder and then backed the truck about half way back up the ramp, and we stayed there for the night. The next morning we got up and traffic was moving, plows of salt were all out then, I went to the closest truck stop and stopped to get the kids and I breakfast, and to fuel up the truck and trailer, when I noticed a tow truck, out of spite, as the driver happen to be walking in at the same time we were, I said to him, I bet you were busy last night, he said back to me, Ahh I got stuck behind that big pile up and they just opened it back up about 45 mins ago, I said what pile up, he said the one about 20 miles back coming east, OMG, I then realized that accident happened right behind me, and I mean right behind me, come to find out the car that was going 20sh or so, and the car that was right behind me, met somewhere together, it in turn took out the rest of the group, and proceeded to claim 21 more trucks and cars that night. I heard nothing about injuries or deaths, but I also remember we were going between 60 and 70 when that accident happened, I was the only one to come out of it without damage. I never told that story before now, and watching these videos, really makes me shed a tear, because it would have been very easy for this incident to turn out differently for my family, I don't wish this on anybody. This is no joke, and as many people that I saw over the years that never got to tell their families goodbye, that found the end of their life on some highway, and through my story, I encourage everyone, no matter what their circumstance, please, please, make sure you tell the ones you love that you love them, never leave them mad, because you just never know.

    As a rule, don't driver faster than your ability to stop before the distance you can see. What I mean is, if you can only see 50 yards, how fast would you be able to stop if suddenly a brick wall appeared? Run that through your mind, how fast can you reach the brake pedal, how much grip is there on the road? Don't drive faster than that. But it's never going to work because most people are clueless and drive a car like a piece of poorly written software too dumb to consider possible variables. And the ones who aren't even clueless have to worry about the ones who are and being rear ended. And people texting are on another level of stupid. So what the hell are you suppose to do.

For the same reason that the there were only 100 cars involved when there's more than 100'000 on the road that day. This is quite simply a case of a combination of distracted driving, and clearly TOO FAST for conditions. You slow down to 25-30, instead of driving 50-55. I drive back and forth to/from northern WI every month, and the way people drive is ridiculous. People are in such a hurry, and when the speed limit is 55 on HWY 45, good luck driving 55. People drive 70, and hopefully you don't get run over. Lot's of very, very incompetent, dumb drivers out there.

    • @sheryllebombard2602
      @sheryllebombard2602 5 лет назад

      You obviously weren't there. Too fast for conditions? You do realize they had a beginning - right? So "conditions" didn't exist until they SUDDENLY did. We drove right into a white cloud - a SUDDEN white cloud. So unless you were there, don't make such comments, unless you carry a crystal ball. Despite the carnage to vehicles (which by the way are DESIGNED to crumple like that to defer the energy and save the occupants), there were few serious injuries and only one fatality. As bad as that is, I believe if it were as high speed and distracted as you think, it would have been much worse. Many vehicles around us collided because we all got disoriented with the sudden whiteout, but most of us didn't have airbags deploy or even broken glass. Since airbags go off around 40 MPH, I'd say most of us (in the front anyway ) were able to get our speed down and avoid more serious injuries. And many folks in the middle, DID get their car under control and pull over - only to be swept along by the semi that overturned. So don't put us all in one basket of bad drivers and call folks incompetent and dumb. I think a lot of us did pretty damn good. Give credit instead to those rescue folks who had to sort it all out as the weather continued to deteriorate and Thank God you weren't in it and affected. It was a horrible thing to live through and even worse to read comments like yours.

    • @HighMo
      @HighMo 5 лет назад

      @@sheryllebombard2602 All it takes is a couple of idiots driving into a whiteout at 60 MPH, and another 2-3 in back that are following too close, or driving too fast to avoid them spinning, and this is what you get. Not all were at fault OBVIOUSLY, but it took some serious incompetence to start this carnage.

    • @sheryllebombard2602
      @sheryllebombard2602 5 лет назад

      I still don't feel you get it. How could the people in the front anticipate that suddenly we weren't going to be able to see? When you are driving along with good visibility, and suddenly its like a white sheet was dropped - what would you do? Everyone hit their brakes and slowed down - but you quickly lose your lane and where other cars are in relation to you and the "bumper car effect" began. Again, I think you had to be there. We didn't drive into a whiteout. We suddenly had one descend on us. @@HighMo

      @@sheryllebombard2602 It's called, ANTICIPATE....ADAPT....OVERCOME! Obviously YOU didn't get it, which is WHY you were in this wreck. I've been driving for 40+ years and obviously managed to never get in the middle of something like this. I drive 500+ miles round trip to a cabin in northern WI, probably 6-7 times every winter for 25 years. Seen a few things, including black ice for 100-150 miles this year, driving 25-35 when people were passing me at 55-60. I managed to avoid disaster due to extreme caution. Lot's of idiots out there, I try to avoid being around them at ALL times.

      @@HighMo by the times the winds started it had fully stopped snowing. You know nothing of this stretch of highway. There maybe barriers but there is a lot of open field that made it seem worse than what it was. A lot of people were either coming home from up north or on their way to work (employers don't care about weather). This area usually isn't that bad. Try going over the butte des morts or Leo frigo bridges once if you want white knuckles during winter time. I live near the first bridge and will not use it during winter.

    "snowstorm causes pileup" I think irresponsibly unsafe driving caused a pile up. People up north in the US get complacent with driving in the snow and start driving like maniacs as if going 50-60 mph during 40mph winds/snow drifts and sub freezing temps is OK. Maybe they'll learn how to drive responsibly after this.

    • @sheryllebombard2602
      @sheryllebombard2602 5 лет назад

      All events have a beginning, though. Like a summer day when it wasn't raining, but suddenly the sky opens and its pouring? Do you ask people why they were out in the rain? Or just understand that they got "caught in it". Well that day WAS clear, (although windy) and then SUDDENLY a gust cleared the field and put us in a sudden and complete whiteout. This did not come from the sky like a normal snowstorm, which you can see starting. This came across from the side of the highway and happened suddenly. Guess you had to be there but we weren't all maniacs and we did feel we drove responsibly. We got our speed down but still hit someone to our side (because you lose all orientation to your lane and where other cars are - couldn't even see people's brake lights) and also got hit from behind. But no airbags deployed, no windows or windshields broke in our group of cars, so some of us were going slow. And lots in the middle were able to get their vehicles under control and stop, only to be swept along with the semi that rolled. We are grateful for the low amount of serious injuries and only the one fatality. We will respect high wind warnings from now on - but this was a freak event and having all of us criticized for poor driving is unfair.

      Did you not watch the video!?! When the sheriff pulls up to the scene it was clear and then there is a wall of white. In the a millisecond you have to react to that it is already to late. Do not make a comment if you don't understand what was going on. If you do not drive in the winter every single year since you learned how to drive then you cannot understand these circumstances were abnormal. People do drive responsibly in Wisconsin and are reminded this at the start of every winter season.
