TORQUE Measurement on two-wheeler with strain gages
Strain gages are bonded on the radial arms of the rear wheel sprocket of a motor cycle to measure the torque on the wheel. A TECAT Telemetry system is installed on the sprocket, to send the straingage signal wirelessly to a receiver, which is connected to a laptop that shows real time torque values on the screen.
Before the test, the gage/transmitter/receiver system is calibrated by applying a known torque on the wheel.
This system allows measurement of torque under actual running conditions of the vehicle, in the lab and in the field.

Strain gage bonding on FRP
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.5 лет назад
Most fiber-reinforced plastics have undulating surfaces due to the weave of the fibers. To bond a straingage on such surface , it is necessary to first create a flat smooth surface. One way is to abrade the surface with silicon carbide paper till the corrugations are removed fully, but this is often not allowed as the possible removal of fibers in this process is likely to alter the structure s...
Strain gage (gauge) on glass with AE-10 adhesive
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.5 лет назад
Bonding a strain gage on glass is a challenge, since the surface is extremely smooth and does not provide a good anchor for the adhesive to grip on. Normally the surface of a test part is abraded to get the adhesive to bond well, but abrading on glass is often not permitted. To improve the chance of a good bond, the surface of glass is degreased and cleaned repeatedly several times to get it ab...
STRAIN GAGE SIMPLE BRIDGE CONNECTION FOR TORQUE

Strain gage (gauge) installation on Concrete
Просмотров 25 тыс.6 лет назад
For bonding strain gages to any component, the component should have a smooth surface, free of voids, pin-holes, scratches, undulations, or other visible defects . Concrete surfaces are porous, with voids between the sand particles and loose dust, which can prevent the gage from bonding well. Also, concrete surface will have significant variation of strain over a given area, due to its non-homo...

Strain gage for measuring Thermal Expansion Coefficient

For most common engineering materials , the Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) is available in published data books. But for new materials such as alloys and composites, the CTE may need to be determined experimentally. This is normally done on a test bar made of the material with un-known CTE , by measuring the change in length of the bar for a given range of temperature change, and calcul...
Strain gage (gauge) installation on glass

Glass surfaces are extremely smooth and practically impervious, because of which adhesives do not get a good hold, and bonding strain gages to glass becomes a challenge. In this exercise, in an attempt to get a satisfactory bonding of a ...
Strain gage(gauge) sensitivity - measure 1 microstrain or less
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.7 лет назад
Strain gages are extremely sensitive sensors - they can respond to the smallest changes in dimensions of components. The ability to measure these changes is limited by the stability and resolution of the strain measuring instruments - The greater the stability and resolution , the smaller the strain that can be detected and measured. The prime requirement for this is very high quality straingag...

    Can you use a strain gauge to sense something that sensitive in a wearable product that can be affordable mass manufactured or do you need high sensitive machinery to rly sense it

    • @DynatecIndia
      @DynatecIndia 3 года назад

      The strain gage by itself is a very sensitive sensor that gives an output for extremely small change in the dimensions of a part (so small that it is invisible to the eye), and which cannot be measured by any other common measurement tools. However the output of the straingage is also very small, less than 1 microvolt in the above example. In order to measure this output accurately, you need a very sensitive instrument, which is expensive. Please send me details of your application at vijay.dynatec@gmail.com, about the wearable part, so I can advise further, about affordable manufacture.

      @@DynatecIndia what is the limit factor? 10? Have you ever tried greater figures?

    • @DynatecIndia
      @DynatecIndia 3 года назад

      The instrument which I used, Model P3 of Vishay Micro Measurements, is specified to operate with a gage factor setting from 0.5 to 9.5. I already stretched it by setting the gage factor to 0.212. It still worked. Perhaps there will be instruments with greater sensitivity, and then maybe the limit can be stretched, but I do not have access to such an instrument. I feel that since the straingage output is purely analog, with resolution nearing infinity, the limit factor is the sensitivity of the read-out instrument. It is indeed necessary to use a very high quality straingage, the best adhesives and accessories, and follow the straingage installation process strictly. All the items used in my experiment were the products supplied by Vishay Micro Measurements of USA. Best regards, Vijay ( vijay.dynatec@gmail.com)

      The same procedure is used for 2 mm gage also. Since the alignment marks on the small gage would be close, care should be taken to align the gage more carefully. Also, the solder tabs of small gages are more sensitive, so thin lead wires such as 134-AWP from Micro Measurements may be used, and more care has to be taken not to overheat the tabs while soldering. what about temperature compensation?

    • @DynatecIndia
      @DynatecIndia 4 года назад

      If all the 4 straingages in a wheatstone bridge are bonded on the same part close to each other, all the gages will react equally to any temperature changes , and in a full bridge configuration we can expect these changes to cancel each other, so the effect on the out put of the bridge is insignificant. This is considered adequate for most stress analysis applications In transducer applications where even small errors are not tolerated, further temperature compensation is carried out by adding small resistance wires made of Balco, which is sensitive to temperature changes, to an individual arm of the bridge to compensate for the temperature change. Adding this resistance in the arm of a bridge will un-balance the bridge, and this unbalance is compensated by adding a similar manganin wire( which is insensitive to temperature changes) in the adjacent arm to remove the offset caused by the Balco wire. Each time a change is made, the part is subjected to temperature changes and tested for adequate compensation, Regards
