This was a fascinating interview, one of the best I've seen on this channel. I wish it would have gone on longer as I'm sure Mr. Shurman has a lot more stories to tell. Perhaps he should write a book about his life in the Blues. I'll bet it would be a great read! Anyway, well done to both of you!

Great interview! Dick Shurman is a national treasure. One subject you didn't touch on here is how many blues scholars he's helped. When I and my co-author, Jim Segrest, were working on the only Howlin' Wolf biography, Dick was an incredibly generous source of information, insights, and introductions to people we wanted to meet. That book wouldn't have been complete without his help. We're not alone. Almost every biography of every Chicago blues figure that's come out in the last 25 years has included a thank-you to Dick. He's helped and inspired so many blues scribes, and we're all richer for it. Thanks for introducing him to your audience.

Great interview...his mind is still so razor sharp, as is his wit. I have loved his music since about 1987: I saw the Monterey Pop movie when I was like 14 and among other great life changing performances, was Section 43...a psychedelic oasis, and the footage of the grounds, particularly the fairway gave me the most profound deja vu I've had in my life...yet I was born in 73!!! But now, as an orchestral composer, I hear the music that inspired me when I was younger, with fresh ears and an even deeper appreciation of it...thanks Mark for interviewing one of my adolescent idols with such class and humor and thank you Joe for all of the mind bending music and thought provoking lyrics you have given us over time...I would LOVE to cover Section 43 for orchestra!!!

A lot of meat to digest in this conversation. Years ago, Billy Branch told me that in the minds of most black fans there is little distinction between Tyronne Davis and Bb King as relates to genre. It all falls under "black music." There is a ton of bitterness among female black vocalists over the glory (and fortune) given to every new young white sexy singer who comes along. Compare the fates of a Sue Foley or even a Susan T. to a Nora Jean Wallace or Katherine Davis or Karen Carroll and on and on. First, they NEVER get any mainstream radio airplay, they don't get invited to mixed genre music festivals, they lack the resources to get proper PR and marketing, etc etc. Is the root cause attributable to our racist history and music business practices, of course. Anyway, Dick is a gem. I'm really glad you did this Mark. And for the desire to broach these touchy issues.

Before Bill Graham started giving the band a venue on the West Coast they played a lot of university concerts. I saw them at Pauley Ballroom at UC Berkeley in late 1965 at a freshman welcome dance on a double bill with another new band that we did not know, The Jefferson Airplane. What a concert! Blew my mind and made me a lifelong Butterfield Blues Band, Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop fan.

Mark, I'm so grateful for Greg Piccolo; one of the best saxophonists of all time from the heart of Roomful of Blues. I really love the music of Roomful of Blues. It shaped the blues, swing, and so much more to store. I really love the former members like Sugar Ray Norcia, Mark Dufresne, Fran Christina, the late great Preston Hubbard, and the iconic Ronnie Earl. Mark, I do love Roomful of Blues. Truth is, Greg was the one with the tone of his tenor saxophone, and all the former members of Roomful of Blues are still the family tree. Shoutout to Rich Lataille, Chris Vachon, and the current members as well. Peace to you!

Working at Montgomery Ward's in Frederick Maryland loading dock, I met a guy who had a store in the mall making leather stuff. He had a harmonica side holster with three harmonicas in it. He played a little bit and I thought that sounds really good can you make me one of those and I'll go get three harmonicas to stick in it. Back then Hohner harmonicas were wooden in the center. They would swell when they got wet. That would wear on your lips and they'd start to swell a bit after playing a while. I never learned how to play along with other guitar players and harmonica players, but I did learn whammer Jammer verbatim. Mostly for myself to take on the challenge. To me it was like conquering a great math problem. Since I what's unwilling to apply myself to algebra math and geometry, I applied myself to a certain degree to musical instruments. First chair trumpets in the high school band, never practiced, I knew no Theory, but would play by ear, and watch Ike A. where he put fingers down on the trumpet. Then I got a hold of my brother's guitar and his Harman Kardon stereo and begin to jam with Rodger Daltrey, Pete townsend, Robin Trower, the Eagles, America... I never got into any Jay geils song except whammer jammer. My genre was more melodious rock, and then the Eagle, Lynyrd skynyrd, Dickey Betts blue sky, The Allman brothers, the outlaws, Eddie money, Boston, the cars, Pink Floyd's lead guitarist David Gilmour pretty phenomenal. Richard salitz magic dick was the most influential harmonica player I've ever heard and was my whole reason for learning to play harmonica. I still love hearing him play. Of course Bob Dylan and Neil Young were easy to imitate. Like a lot of their stuff too. At the age of 23, I got tuned onto Christian rock because I'd had an experience with Jesus Christ near Annapolis Inner Harbor by the Naval Academy. The devil's attack on my inner peace I brought me to my wits end period with no other options but suicide, I told the friend. Kevin K said, " Ben man, aren't you a christian? I didn't know what that meant except if you're religious? And no, I hadn't been for 5 years since I left home. "Jesus man, trust Jesus", he said. Instantly I sensed the presence of Jesus Christ walk into my heart, mind and soul. I said, " Lord, you're real. Yes, and I've been waiting 23 years for us to know each other. That was it, within a week or so I was seeking the Lord reading his good word in the New Testament and I decided to toss my records like Running With The devil, Back in Black and got kicked out of my own rock band cuz I wouldn't sing a friend of the devil's a friend of mine anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of rock, and I love those artists, and a lot of there tunes, I just can't abide some lyrics now. This was a great interview. And thank you to both men
