Photography and Mental Health
It has been such a long time since I have posted a video and this is down to my poor mental health. A common sign is that hobbies or tasks that you normally enjoy, often become a chore and you procrastinate until they become impossible. This is true of me and photography and making videos. I apologise. In this video, I try to explain.

Brush or scrape the battery contact points for corrosion with a steel brush or flat screwdriver until you se the bare metal surface. Also the springs at the top of the battery compartment. You can flush with warm water where it doesn’t get into the camera. Let it dry thoroughly and apply some oil to the metal parts. That should solve the battery issue.

Hi Jon. While looking for help to get started with the epson scanner and Silverfast 9 combination, I stumbled across this video. I feel all of it. Great how open you are about it. Many thanks for that. Except that my father wasn't a photographer, I recognize pretty much everything you describe in myself. After a complete breakdown resulting from a combination of burn out syndrome and severe depression a few years ago, it was photography and the intense involvement with it that got me moving again. The darkroom is a kind of therapy room. I am writing this because your video touched me deeply and to tell you that you are not alone.

At the time Rollei owned Voigtlander and the Voigtlander VSL3E was a slightly down market version with a reduced specification, no multi exposure and plastic top plate rather than metal. Ironically the Voigtlander today seems to command the higher price. The Rolleiflex SL35E and the Voigtlander VSL3E were terribly unreliable back then and probably put the final nail in the coffin of Franke & Heidecke (the actual company, Rollei and Rolleiflex were brand names only). I know this because I had massive issues with my (several) SL35E's and my SL35ME's beforehand. I think it was all down to quality control on the circuit boards. Any of these cameras that survive today are probably going to be very reliable. The mechanical components are in the main shared with the Rolleiflex SL2002f and 3003, so they were designed to be up to professional use. In fact there was a five frame per second motor-drive developed for the camera, and therefore the shutter winding mechanism was extremely robust to cope with the stain. The camera would have got a 250 frame back if the company had survived long enough. Despite my personal experience in the 1970's, the Rolleiflex SL35E remains my favourite camera of that time, feels just right in every way. And yes I do have one now, more than one to be honest. One point you did not mention are the focus screens are interchangeable. One annoying point is that the aperture is shown in the viewfinder via a judas window. The issue is that not all the Rollei Zeiss lenses, even some of the quite late ones have the aperture scale correctly located for this to work. All of the Rolleinar lenses I have used work just fine. Overall, a great camera and I enjoyed the review.

An addition and a correction to an otherwise excellent overview of SilverFast 9. 1) The scanner piece in the lid is a light, the scanner uses the same sensor for everything in the lower part. The two are kept in synch during scanning. 2) to cut out that annoying mirror image scanning problem, put the negatives in the holder emulsion side up, shiny side down.
