HOW TO DRAW for those that think they can’t No.28 FREE DRAWING COURSE foreshortening
Просмотров 2194 года назад
In the last video we looked at foreshortening. In this video we apply the same principles to the human form. Initially it looks complicated but it isn’t and from past experience I find that once students know how to use measuring, drawing the human form from a foreshortened perspective is well within their skills.

In the last two videos I showed you the importance of measuring your subject using an extended arm and a pencil. The skills acquired are applied to drawing foreshortened objects. I stress the importance here or believing your eyes and not your brain.

Following on from video 25 where we looked at the importance of selecting a unit of measurement, this video explains how a piece of card or proportional dividers gives you more flexibility as regards scale.

Your brain can trick you into thinking that something is bigger or smaller than it is. I show you how to use your pencil as a unit of measurement, a simple way of making your drawing proportionally accurate.

Following on from last week’s video where we used ovals to help us draw animals, the same system is applied here for flower drawing. This method superimposes ovals onto flower heads and then uses the skill (from precious videos) of “flattening” the shape of the petals.

In this video I reveal another drawing system which you can put in your “toolbox”. Overlapping ovals lend themselves perfectly to drawing animals whether they are moving or are in static poses.
HOW TO DRAW for those that think they can’t FREE DRAWING COURSE No.22 Quality of Line

Line quality is often overlooked, much to the detriment of your drawing. In this video I show you the importance of varying your pencil line to indicate volume, light and shade. A clumsy drawing can be transformed into a more professional rendering by paying attention to the quality of your lines.

Lines are useful, even if imaginary. In this video I explain how by using horizontal and vertical line you can better construct a drawing. Imaginary lines allow you to constantly scan your drawing making corrections as you proceed.

The space around objects is every bit as important as the object itself and by training your brain to look at these you will vastly improve your drawing.

Looking at the rendering of reflective surfaces. Drawing glass and metal use the same technique and this video reinforces video no. 13 which covered reflections in metal. I also recap what we found out about drawing ellipses. The emphasis is again on observation and the importance of pentimenti.

Before moving on to reflections in glass, it is necessary to tackle ellipses, as glass usually involves glassware such a bottles, jars etc. Here I explain how your eye level effects the depth of the ellipse and what you need to bear in mind when drawing objects which have a circular opening.

The 3x3 grid not only helps you frame the composition and transfer the image to your page, but it also allows you to line up the composition with the focal points folthe rule of 3rds wher the piece is more aesthetically pleasing if the focal points line up with the intersections of the 3x3 grid. All of your examples did!

Hi, sorry for the delay. The aperture depends on the proportions of the paper that you are using for drawing. If the paper is A4 size then the aperture (hole) needs to be cut at the same proportion 1: 1.4 approximately. Something like 82mm x 56mm - aperture size - that’s what I use . The measurement of the outside piece of card doesn’t matter - whatever suits you best to hold. If the paper isn’t A4 you’ll need to measure the width and length of your paper and work out the ratio eg 1:1.4, 1:1.5: 1.1.6 etc and cut the apperture to that proportion. Hope that helps.

I'll have to try this method. I've been using a kind of scraping-technique with an old store card. I saw Terry Harrison using it in a video. It takes a bit of practice, but it results in random rock patterns - ideal for cliffs and sma rocks. But for stones it lack that roundness you mentioned, or maybe I'm not doing the technique properly...

Hi Mark. No teacher has the “right” way so you are doing the best thing ie Seeing what others can suggest and trying out their methods. You’ll probably find something that is “your” way which uses a few ideas. Good luck and keep experimenting.

I don’t know any professional artist who would draw or paint out of their head. I think you are right though in that it is a misconception. “Real” artists look extremely carefully at what they are trying to draw and draw what they see and not what they think they see. Now that you understand this , it will open a path for you. Enjoy your creativity now as it is limitless. P x

I wouldn’t worry too much about being too tight. Painting style is very personal and perhaps it best suits you ,as an artist, to paint how you naturally want to paint. The pressure is always on to “loosen up” but not all artists benefit from that advice . Have belief in yourself - I’m sure you paint just fine. P x
