Chasing Freedom

Добавлен 5 окт 2021
Chasing Freedom is a vlog that is documenting a couple that have sold it all to purchase a blue water sailboat to explore the world. Follow along as they navigate this crazy process and learn the lines along the way.
Episode 6: Life & Storms at Anchor
Sorry, we have been off the map. Since our last video we made our first sail a Gulf Stream crossing over to the north Abacos. After our dingy motor became non operational and several other issues we decided to come back to Florida to re group. The overnight crossing on the way back was not during an ideal weather window and we learned many lessons and much respect for that current. In the process we have lost most of our footage of that trip but included a few clips here at the end. We are waiting for a few parts that we ordered to come in and then we plan to be on the move again soon and posting weekly. Thank you for your patience, and thank you for watching!

You guys still around?
Yes. We are motoring down the ICW as we speak, heading south to Fort Pierce.
Hi Sir! Did you add out riggers to your canoe? That would help with storage.
No, we never did that. We ended up selling that boat and buying the sailboat that we still currently live on full time.
Cheer~~~gloomy and drab.😊
Hey guys, what has happened to you, you've been silent for a real long time?
Without going into a lot of detail, we have faced slot of personal issues that have derailed what we set out to do. Including last July, our daughter was in a near fatal car accident and the recovery after that. We still have the boat. We have lived at anchor for 11 of the last 16 months. We recently made a month trip to the Bahamas, but did not make any full length videos, but I did post some short’s. The intent of that trip was for Juliet to produce some videos for an online based fitness and coaching program so that was the focus. We did some great sailing and had a ripping sail back across the Gulf Stream in heavy seas and high winds.. I would love to re start the videos and show the actual reality of this life, as I don’t think most channels do. But at this point I do not know what the future holds. I appreciate you and anyone that supported us and I hope to continue. Thank you for reaching out.
Keep on keeping on.
Absolutely beautiful!!🤩

How big is your boat?
It is an Island Packet 35.
Sure sounds like motor is running. But I LOVE IP!
Im guessing the waiting on parts is delaying your next move. Its been a while, hope all is well.
Thank you for the message. We have been dealing with many things that have kept us from posting any new content but are hopeful to get some more out very soon. We have replaced the alternator, external voltage regulator, and the charge controller and have our power supply under control for the moment. For the most part our solar keeps up with the demand but it dipped down pretty low and all of our alternate sources for charging batteries were not working. It is always something. Thank you for watching, apologies for the delays, we are alive and have changed locations, videos coming!
It sounds like the motor is running though.
No motor running in this video. I don't have a lot to compare it to, but so far we have been please with the performance. I think a lot of times people compare apples to oranges. I am sure there are faster boats, but then what is the live aboard comfort or stability in heavy weather like? Thanks for watching!
That looks really beautiful, and the mangroves ain't bad either!!!
Thanks for the update looking forward to the next.
Thank you. We just completed a few big projects like replacing 250 feet of anchor chain while tied up to another boat at anchor which was interesting hauling that from the car to the dingy. Looking forward to moving again soon.
Guys, looking forward to watching your next episodes and wish you all the best for your new journey
Thank you, we really appreciate your support.
Guys, I really love your dogs 🤗
Yes, they are a handful for sure.
@@ChasingFreedom8 when I watched your Episode 1 and saw your dogs, I was really curious about them but thanks god that they will be together with you on your journey, I appriciate that 👏👏👏👍👊 Greeetingsfrom Istanbul, Turkey
Tough decision but worths to respect 👏👏👏 Looking forward to seeing your videos guys 🤞👍
Thank you for the kind words. Hope to be on the move very soon!
Thank you for the video, can't wait for the next...
Thank you for the support. We really appreciate it.
Will you update Patron ? Thank you
Just loaded our last video on there. We apologize for the delay in any new videos. We had a lot of setbacks recently, but hope to be posting again weekly starting this week. It's been wild....
Nice vid ol girl got a nice ass too
What’s happening? Left me wondering how yer doing. I’m guessing internet woes….
Hey! We have had several issues that caused us not to post in a while but we are trying to correct that now. Had to take care of several issues, but hope to start posting again soon! Thank you!

Some locks will fine you if you touch the walls
Ya, in this case the wall he was referring to was outside the lock in the staging area waiting to come in. It had railroad tie like material and there were some large cleats that appeared to maybe be for some larger boats that come through. We were staying just off of it but it allowed us to hold a position. Still not sure what the issue was.
wow that barrier is barely going down and the train wheezed by
what boat is that?
It is an Island Packet 35.
@@ChasingFreedom8 how you like it? i'm looking at a 380.
@@JohnBraman413 a 380’would be a great boat. We looked at some other brands but kept coming back to IP. The room and build quality is great. Without getting into the endless keel debate, we really like the full keel design and feel better with it. Having a relatively shallow draft and the ability to hit bottom at least reasonably without worry is nice.
@@ChasingFreedom8 did you check or change out the old chainplates?
@@JohnBraman413 the previous owner replaced the chain plates a few years ago. One of the main reasons we actually bought this one. We are anchored in Stuart in Manatee Pocket right now, which I didn’t realize but the canal here goes back to where Mack services is. They do lots of those and many IP’s anchor here whistling to go back and get them done.
Hey Girl! Tina here 😊
How do you lower the dinghy? Any way to rig it up to lower the dogs? Or tie a rope to the life vest to help lower the rest the way done so 100lb pups aren’t crushing the lil lady .
There are “davits” on the back with a pulley system to lower and raise the dingy. Once in the water one of those can be used to lower the engine also. We could also use them for the dogs but we just manually lower and lift them using the handles on their vests.
What do you respective sailing CVs look like? Is this your first boat? That's pretty awesome if it is.
Still trying to get some projects done here at anchor. We are open to where we go next but just want to make sure the boat and we are ready. Going to try and do some day sails here locally so we can both get comfortable with it. This is our first sailboat. We took some courses at the Maryland school of sailing which uses Island Packet 32’s and we really liked it we did look at other brands but kept coming back to this one.
I have heard of the Maryland school of sailing & seamanship. They are an excellent school with a phenomenal reputation. They offer so many classes how many have you taken?
What did you guys think of ASA 104 with the Maryland School? Did you have a hard time doing your standing pivots?
Hmm something tells me (your fast and excited replies to all my other questions ( OR lack there of)) more training and experience may be wise. I know it is exciting you guys can taste it you are so close to heading for the next stop, next island, next country but don't stop short in your training only to get set back 90 steps and possibly loose everything, even your lives. $hi⒯ is real out there and the sea, she don't care; who you are, what you got, how good the footage you have is, how many subscribers you have, or that you have two dogs who did not ask to be on your boat, the sea will take them too. In the blink of an eye. Faster than you can say "I wanna go home." Have you ever used a sea anchor? Do you have a sea anchor? Do you know how to 'heave to'? Do you know cloud types and what weather they can predict and how far away that weather might be? Do you have an EPIRB? Do you have two EPIRBs? Do you know what happens if you activate two EPIRBs at the same time? Do you have sea dye? I haven't seen a M.O.B. flag on board Have you done M.O.B drills on this boat? How are you going to get an incapacitated person back on board? What weather routing services are you using? Can you tell predicted wind speed in an upcoming storm based on wave height and frequency? My friends that was me just thinking of, thinking about, scratching the surface of the questions that should be asked. To say that another way. Make sure you have: ASA 101 ASA 103 ASA 104 ASA 105 ASA 106 ASA 107 would be good too ASA 108 for what your stated goal are The sea is no place for the inexperienced. Learn that the easy way or the hard way, the choice is yours. -fair winds and following seas
Hey KP, enjoy the journey.
Thank you Brian. It’s way harder that my old job lol.
My dang dog always pushing the edge like that. Funny doggo you got there.
You should see him on the dingy. Tries to jump out 20 feet from the dock. Lol.
what boat is that?
It is a 1989 Island Packet 35.
Thank you for the video, I think I found my youtube sailboat wife lol.... Hang in there and take it slow, things will come together with experience...
It is a lot of information. And a steep learning curve. Watching three sailboats drag across the anchorage the other day was a wake up call. Hoping to get out of the inlet here soon and do some day sails to shake down the boat and get it ready for some longer trips. Thank you for the support.
I love how these videos are Raw and learning as you go!! You have already made progress and I can’t wait to see what the next video holds. I love, love, love natural and unscripted videos…so proud of yall
Lol. There is a lot we didn’t capture, but taking off in a boat that is about 45’ long including the bow sprit and the dingy davits was pretty wild. Learning a lot each day.
WOW what is your bridge clearance?
Mast is 48’. With the VHF antenna I’m guessing just over 50 ish. The lowest bridge showed 54’.
Now you are on your way to a New adventurous. Take your time and enjoy it. Ok not knowing what or where ya'll are wanting to go. If you end up in the Pacific, stop on by the Big Island of Hawaii! We can meet up and talk story about Boating and where it can take you. So Thank you for this week's video. And I am looking forward for the next one. So until next time, Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!
Thank you for the hospitality. Making it to Hawaii would be a great achievement. Lots of firsts in the last couple days. Getting more experience every day. Thank you again
Nice to see people figuring it out.. youre about 2 years ahead of us.
It is a ton of information. Thankfully some people that are ahead of us have given some great advise.
Hello from Houston, word of advice in 6 months you will be Pros. Just don't panic, anticipate the unexpected, remember the sea is beautiful but unforgiving. Just follow your dream ,you made it. You will find a new sailing community soon. Relax have fun. Enjoy what's to come. Fair winds and Gods Speed! Good luck.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words. And you are right. Even just motoring we made the comment that there is no place to pull over on the shoulder for a time out. Lol.
That dog almost, going over the side ! Alligator bait !
It’s hard to say this early on if he would really go over. He is very athletic and loves the water and swimming. We would never have him out on deck like that when sailing but the calm canal wasn’t to bad. He does live to test all limits though. Lol.
Glad to see you guys out on the water. Let the adventure begin! Oh and hello from Oregon.
Thank you! Still adjusting and the learning curve is steep. Lots of firsts over the last several days.
What boat yard are you in? Boat yards that let you live aboard while working on your boat are getting harder to find here in Florida.
This was at Indiantown marina. The working yard is $50 per day and you are allowed to live on board as you work. There is power and water there and a building with bathrooms and showers as well as a small laundry mat.
The journey begins
Yes! To where, not sure yet. Lol.
I THOUGHT THESE PAIR WERE FATHER AND DAUGHTER.
Lol. 4 years apart. Brutal….
