How to Polish Guitar Frets

In this video I demonstrate how to clean up nasty, corroded frets. Many times, just using steel wool and polish will suffice. This guitar, however, needed a more aggressive approach.

I show how to install Mesa Boogie style leather corners on your amplifier or cabinet. You can purchase the leather corners and tacks from Mesa's store site here: mesa.stores.yahoo.net/guampco.html
Very helpful. Thank you very much!
Aesthetically, the common way to wind the strings, without the knot, is more pleasing to the eye and cleaner looking. I have never had a “once in a blue moon” issue of slippage. And for sure, it’s much easier to remove without having to untie a knot! Great that you show both ways. 👍
THANK YOUUUU
Plsss reply me Can i use metal polish to make the frets shine?
Yup, metal polish works. Just protect the fretboard with masking tape
@@fixthethings Thank you very much
@@fixthethings thanks bro It's helped me alot
I know this video is old but I just got a cheap guitar and I wanna learn but I could tell the strings probably never been replaced. I was so scared to mess it up. Till I found your video!!! Thank you for making me feel like I could do it. I did it and I tuned it! Thank you for making it simple and for people just starting to learn the knowledge of a guitar and the up keep. Thank you for the encouragement.
Love to hear it! That’s why I made the video, glad it helped you out
Video: Don't worry just do it! Me: immediately breaks expensive string while tightening it I am extremely mad, this video sucks
Strings aren’t hard to come by, you can always get more. Also, the video didn’t break your string.
@@fixthethings I was just changing my first acoustic guitar string after having a classic guitar for a long time, so when in the video it says to just go hard and not worry, I did it like it was a nylon string and it snapped immediately It was my fault for having my first string I change on an acoustic be a Elixir and not having replacements handy, I ended up extremely sad and annoyed because I couldn't actually play my new guitar so I vented on the video that made me break a string, as is my right, I re-stringed the whole guitar now and it's all good, but at the moment I was fuming
also, not a problem with just your video, I watched quite a few and found none of them actually taught the finicky and annoying parts of the process, it reminded me of that meme "draw some circles - now draw the rest of the fucking owl" because everyone says "leave x space, now I'll hold it here and there you go, now it's done" when the part they should be explaining is how you are trying to get the slack to go around the peg and guide where the string is coiling and then it should tighten, noone explains that part properly, I learned it just by getting hands on with the strings and messing up a couple of times your vid was the worst tho, just telling people to go hog wild, how dare you? /jk
Have a Yamaha FG5 you have taught me to replace strings properly I use Santa Cruz mediums you are the man
These are now 10 times the price. what crooks.
isn't there a pin puller on your string winder????
Usually, yes, but I grind them off my winders so they don’t accidentally scratch the side of headstocks. I’m constantly getting this comment, I just never mentioned it because my winders don’t have them so I don’t think about it often.
Hum a tech but u dont know why you wind it that way ? Well its because if you wind it the other way it puts more stress on the bridge slot and could potentially damage or break the bridge for you wondering this is why you wind strings to the inside
That’s just plain untrue, your bridge will not break. There are plenty of guitars that have more extreme angles of strings through the nut, and they don’t break bridges. Yes, it minimizes the angle and therefore the tension, but it’s not going to break a bridge.
I said potentially never said it was and FYI on cheaper guitars I've actually seen the bridges pull right off so it very much potentially can happen
I thinking you’re mixing up the words “nut” and “bridge”.
Great video, thank you!
I prefer old and nasty on some parts...RocknRollflat5
If this needs a fix over, it is an understatement ..this is going to b good....RocknRollflat5
Thank you! You helped me not be so anxious about changing my strings.
your "sandwitch" broke my brand new string, "master"
It did not. If it caused string breakage, then all my strings would break too, “commenter”.
Thank you for going slow and being very specific!! Was very helpful.
THAT TIP AT THE END IS VERY GOOD, i was wondering why my tuner was telling me i tuned it all correctly but when i play, it felt off. i bent the ends a bit like u showed and it sounded perfectly, must have ultered the timber to that which i liked more
Awesome! I’m glad that helped you. I’ve never heard anybody talk about it, but I’ve found it to be true in my experience.
I laughed so much at 8.08 when you said let’s get to why you’re actually watching this video!! What kind of knot 😂. I’ve watched loads and yous was definitely the best described. This video is the one I’m going to keep coming back to until it’s second nature. Thank you so much. Rob.
Thank you for the kind words! I’m glad the video is helping you.
"let's get to why you're ACTUALLY watching this video" I feel called out. 😭
Thank you man i appreciate it, i was scared on even puting the string through the hole but this helped keep it up❤❤
Having restrung many instruments in my 75 years, don't forget EYE PROTECTION! Those strings are sure to draw blood from your fingers. When they are in the package they come in, the have stored energy. Pull them out of the package and they want to straighten out like a coiled spring letting loose. Be careful. Unload the energy and be aware of where the sharp end is. Show them a way to protect themselves after the strings are installed. When you cut off the excess, there is still a very sharp little nub usually sticking up. It will get you if you aren't aware.
Im honestly nervous about like knowing which string is the low E or A and putting the strings in the wrong area 🥴
I can’t believe I’ve never known the proper way to string a guitar. I’ve been playing since 71! Thanks so much for you patient explanation! Now if it will just hold a tune…😬
Very helpful, thanks man👍
Nice clear video, thanks!
I've played for decades and didn't know the correct way to do this. Thanks so much!
Essentially, The "Luthier's Knot".
This was great
Thanks 😎
Thank you boss. I messed up recently at the time of restring guitar. I have got it now thanks
I've been coming back to this video for the last four years because I keep forgetting how to do that damn knot...
It’s the gift that keeps giving lol
thanks🎉 dude watching start to end, god bless...
USE A TEASPOON TO REMOVE YOUR PINS
Thanks so much. Really clear and concise. 👍👍
HEY DUDE YOUS A TEA SPOON TO DISLODGE YOUR PINS GOOD LUCK CHRISTIAN FROM AOTEAROÀ NEW ZEALAND
Helpful video. About to put tan corners on a black MB cabinet and was wondering how to approach this. The water soak is key! Thanks ✌️
Within most winders, there's a groove to remove those pins
THANK YOU, MAN, it's my first time doing this and because of this video I successfully did it
I would change strings one by one and tune them as I changing them to keeping strings and neck tension constant. So when finally last string is changed. Guitar will be 90% in tune. It would require Only to retuned them one more time and job is done. If you don't do it that way then you'll have to be retuning few times over and over again.👍😜🤪😖
Sure, that works fine too. There are times I do that, for example on dobros (tension on the spider cone is fickle) mandolins and banjos (because of the floating bridges), and guitars that might have a sensitive pickup. Tension on the neck isn’t really as much of a concern as people think. I’ve seen guitars that have been unstrung for years return immediately to where they should be once strung up. The 5 to 10 minutes it takes to restring a guitar typically won’t affect a neck if all the tension is removed.
Wait until yoou try re-stringing a 12-string . . . . . !
Thank you so much. I tried myself and ended snapping my brand new high e string. I watched your video and managed to change all my other string without issues. Now I just have to wait for a new set of strings to come with a new e string 😂. ❤ From Denmark
do ou have a video doing the tolex job? Id like to know how to do both things
Great teaching video. Thank You!
16:03 highly recommend metal fatiguing it , bend it up and down, side to side, but I've had a g or E pop trying to do that so i cut the ends on treble side
My high E string keeps coming up as a B string when tuning, I can even notice it by ear, I've got 2 B strings. I put the right string on too cause it is color coded. Not sure what is going on? Edit: God I feel like a moron, didn't realize I had to keep tightening it... I thought it would have snapped the string.
found this in 2024 and it's an amazing tutorial. My guitar sounds so much better now. BTW, I"m a beginner and in my 50s and did it by myself.
Pretty sure string winder has a notch to pop out the pins.
Most of them do, but I grind them off my winders to keep from scratching the finish on brittle vintage guitars
Title should be “How to change your strings improperly, spend twice as long to do it, and make the next string change even harder.” All the knots and overwraps accomplish is making it MUCH harder to remove. The proper way is to pull the string up and wrap the post three times, THEN stick it through the post and tighten. One or two wraps on the heavy strings. Done in 15 minutes or less and easy removal. No slippage, nada.
Pretty triggered, huh? As I stated in the video, there are many ways to change strings. Use whatever method you prefer, but the method I show works perfectly. Take your negativity somewhere else.
@@fixthethings your method is misguided and spreads it to inexperienced and impressionable players. I am 72, having played stringed instruments for 60 yrs. I learned the proper method from the world’s finest builder of resonator guitars, Tim Scheerhorn. Try it yourself, you’ll wonder why you ever did anything else.
I’ve tried just about every method, and this is the way I prefer. It’s not misguided, it works. If you don’t like this method, that’s fine, don’t use it. It’s as simple as that.
Thank you sir, picked up some excellent tips 😊
Might it be easier to form the Z bend in the string, and lock the loose end under the business end if the tuning posts were turned first, so that the slot faces across the machine head?
