[Historical Episode 27] LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION: York 1/6 Scale Figure CUSTOM/KITBASH
I decided to do York, Sacagawea, and Toussaint Charbonneau because I don't believe we have accurate depictions of them. Thus, I felt more freedom customizing them.
York was an enslaved servant to William Clark. He hunted for the group, tended to the sick, went on scouting trips, and was instrumental in interacting with the Native Americans encountered. The Native Americans had never seen a black man before and felt that he had special powers. They called him Big Medicine. I imagine York enjoyed the most freedom he had ever experienced as a servant on this trip. It must have been traumatic not to have received his freedom after the trip ended after two years, four months, and ten days. The...

    Very nice job 👍 These figures look great together. The cool thing with making figures of historical people that we don’t have any photos of, is that we don’t need to worry about how their faces looks like. The outfits we can kind of get sort of right due to what we already know about how people dressed back in those days. People (explorers, etc…) didn’t usually wear clothes because they looked great back then, but more so because it was practical. Knowing that, we can imagine how they dressed according to who they were. A hunter in the wilderness didn’t wear a fancy dress, for example. They used leather and fur. Due to the times they lived in we can also imagine how their outfits would look like and how they were made. With a little research and looking at actual pictures from back then we can make pretty accurate and educated guesses.

      I knew I wouldn't have to worry about their faces. That was probably the most important thing. I had fun with Sacawagea and the Chamois. It turned out haflway decent. I used leftover clothing from the Corps of Discovery (Lewis and Clark) makers. I'm going to have to be a touch more cautious with Lewis and Clark as well as Charles Floyd I imagine unless I just want to go full on with artistic license, which I have done before. LOL The thing is this stuff is for me, which makes this stuff so fun. 🤗🤗❤️🤗🤗

All you can do is a museum pose. I still like their stuff, BUT not the prices. I like making my own stuff because I will make something I like and it won't cost me an arm and a leg. I think I had the worst time with Claire. Buttons fell off . . . the knife didn't fit into the sheath (too long), her holster clip snapped, on and on and on. Every time I pick her up, I think something is going to come off of her. I don't get why things are so fragile. It's not like this is their first rodeo making things. It is very frustrating to get things that you pay good money for and straight out of the gate, something bad happens. On one of the Jill Valentine figures--the one on the far left (Super Duck), the pants were so tight they slightly tore when I tried to get them on a body. Thank God the tear is in an obscure place. I don't know about you, but this gets old fast. I'm so sorry about the leggings, the boots, and holster on your figure. That has to suck. 🤔😐😌

    He looks great! Usually when I make custom figures I try to find a plain generic head sculpt. It really doesn’t matter who it looks like as long as it is cheap LOL! I would hate to attempt making scars (and possibly ruin it) if the head sculpt is expensive. These post apocalyptic figures looks great together. I think that you the smart thing by waiting with the weathering until they are all done. That way you’ll be able to make the weathering on all of them look more or less similar. I have done weathering to figures before, and you always learn something new every time. Some times it is too much, which is almost impossible to correct, and some times it is too little, which you can actually fix. So I always tend to keep the figures as clean as possible until I am satisfied with how I get things done. I have a few zombies that I need to weather before they are done, and I may or may not change some of their outfits too. So instead of ruining the current outfits before I have decided on the permanent outfits I just leave them as is for now.

    • @UndergroundActionFigures
      @UndergroundActionFigures 2 дня назад

      THANK you for sharing that. I have to say I am intimidated about the weathering process. I know they will look better weathered, but finding that balance you are talking about and making them all look similar are going to be essential elements. I will die if I overdo it so I think I will practice on some other figure first . . . one that I don't care about if I destroy it. I just hope I don't destroy it. LOL With the Zombie I made, I put some scars on the face and then decided to put more scars on it. Then I thought it was better off with the first set of scars not the additional ones. Sigh. I have to be brave I know, but underneath I am intimidated with the weathering I would like to do on these figures. I'm going to have to practice. There is no way around it. If I don't I'll be very unhappy if the outcome is bad. Thank you for the advice. Start with less. I just hope I know when to stop!!! 🤗🤗😜 🤗🤗

    • @Eseres80
      @Eseres80 2 дня назад

      @@UndergroundActionFigures When it comes to weathering I highly suggest that your start off by finding some similar fabrics and practicing on that first. It is so easy to take it too far, and sometimes less is better than too much. I figured that out the hard way when I added some blood on the first zombie I made. Even when trying to rip up then clothes a little I went too far. I didn’t really notice it while doing it, but it became so clear when I put the clothes on the figure LOL. Another thing I learned about weathering is to keep the clothes on a body when doing it. I have a TTM-18 body that I use for weathering clothes. It makes it so much easier to tell where to put the weathering when there is a posable inside the clothes to get the tears and stains on the right spots. And speaking of tears and ripped up clothes. Using a knife sounds like a food idea, but it doesn’t make the best results. Sandpaper wrapped around a shape similar to the shape of the damage you want to create works better. That way you won’t get so surgical clean cuts, unless such a cut is just what you are going for that is. I think there are some videos on RUclips on how to weather 1/6th scale clothing. You should try to find some of those before you get started.

I can't think of anyone else that does 1/6 American football, other than the Hot Toys Cyborg as a football player, but I've seen soccer players. There was a craze for mini American football helmets way back when. I just did a touch more research. I guess Kenner did 12" figures back in the day (1990s), but those are not good quality items. Keep these 1/6 loose distributers in mind as you look for things--Monkey Depot, Toy Anxiety, Rattlesnake Toys, Black Ops Toys, and Zhukov's Attic. I'll keep trying to add more as I find them. If you go with the DID head vs. the generic, unbranded one, you'll be so much happier. With the generic one, the facial features aren't too bad, but just a touch more off, especially the eyes. Please have fun!!! Try to be patient . . . I have to say that is what I lack when it comes to collecting. In our next episode, I show folks what patience would have created instead of what I originally purchased in terms of a head. Live and learn I say!!! Have fun!!! 🤗🤗🤗

    This is a beautiful figure. I got the silver version too. Haven’t done my review on it yet though, but I have had a look at it. I so wish that it came with both of the head sculpts and a quiver for the arrows. Those are basically my two only complaints about this figure. The head sculpt on the gold version has that fury battle expression and I love it, but I don’t care much for the gold color. A quiver I can probably find on eBay. I think that I will most likely display mine with either no weapons at all or just the trident.

      You are so right . . . the quiver. I didn't even think of that . . . I just kept looking at how good the bow looked. I did like how she looked on the box with the trident, but the bow. Wow. So beautiful. I have to admit that she did look more formidable with the fangs . . . I just didn't like how dog gone green she was albeit snakes can be green. I do wish I could have gotten the other head and it was silver in tone. Having said all of that. I love this figure, but I have to admit, the Dead Queen's head sculpt still outshines here. On the other hand, the price of this thing . . . You can't pass it up. It will go up in price. It has already gone up on eBay. People just don't know it's in stock still in some places. Have a great one today!!! I'm looking forward to your review. The quiver . . . that's a great point!!! 🤗🤗❤️🤗🤗

    Very nice job on this figure. It is sad to think about the Civil War and family member fighting on opposite sides. It must have been really difficult. I have heard about quite a few stories of things that happened during the war. Brothers running into each other where one of them have let the other just kill him because the oldest didn’t want to kill his younger brother and so on. Because they didn’t really have a choise. They could decide to run and try to escape the war, but that could end bad if they got caught. The American Civil War was a really bad one in terms of who was fighting who. It wasn’t like it was another invading nation either. It was americans against americans. So sad…

      @@UndergroundActionFigures America has a lot of very dark and sad history to it. When I was in high school my history teacher said that America was a somewhat unique nation, and that it was built on its own blood. The Civil War is one great example of that, but it began long before that war. It started when the first immigrants/settlers arrived (with the Mayflower ship) and started to build America. How could the intention of starting a new and better world go so horribly wrong… A student in my class back then made a joke that you couldn’t find one spot in America that wasn’t soaked in blood, but my teacher replied that his joke wasn’t actually all that far from being true. American soil have seen far too much bloodshed, and it even happens today, but just in a different way than in the past.

It kind of gives you a better feeling of how the figure should be balanced. If you fall over, then the figure most likely will too LOL. And once I have put a figure in a pose I tend to inspect the pose from all angles to see if it leans unnaturally in some directions so that I can adjust. Sometimes we put a figure in a pose and only look at it from the angle we are going to view it from when we display it, and it may look good. What we don’t notice is that the figure may look off balance when we look at it from the side. This is why it sometimes can take me a whole day just to get a figure in the final pose LOL.

I did so during the huge yearly rodeo called the Calgary Stampede. I chuckled to myself as I and three legit Canadian cowboys rode in the hotel shuttle bus as they spoke of the temperature in Celsius and distance in kilometers. It was their attire that seemed out of context with the use of metric system to me.

    Great figure! Ever time I hear about the various previous wars in history I feel that my heart drops in my chest. Not just because of the war itself, but more so because I know what weapons they used and what the medical knowledge at that point. Getting injured was not a dance on roses back then. It was nothing like we see today where we’ve got surgery techniques that can almost make you good as new again. Back then you was really scared for life, and usually at a very young age too. Then there is the matter of PTSD… No wonder that some people turned into madmen and psychopaths and what not after seeing what they saw in the wars. There was no mental health care system in place to take properly care of those that suffered the aftermath of the gruesome events they had endured. Today we kill without even twitching an eye. We go to a psychologist because we experience stress over the simplest of things. Almost everything can be fixed with surgery. They didn’t have all of this back in those days. What we call a «hard time» today was a walk in the park on a sunny day for people back then. It makes me think about how fragile we have gotten the «better» we have made things. And people today complain over more or less nothing… We have absolutely forgotten the meaning of a «hard and difficult life», in my opinion.

      "The Husband here" Yeah, a "slow" moving .58 caliber lead ball does enormous violence to a human body. Amputations were the norm for a leg or arm wound before infection set in due to residual bone and flesh in the wound from the large and slow moving projectile. No concept of sterilization, And a wooden wheel wagon was your ride out of the battle zone. Ancient Rome's Galen was the better trauma surgeon, I'd argue. And "hard times" today is when you can't get cellphone service in a given area.

      @@UndergroundActionFigures That is so true. A lot of times when I watch periodical drama movies I tend to fall in love with how they lived their daily lives. It looks like such a simple and good life for the most part. None of that stress we have in todays era. Of course they also had their difficulties and all that, but if one look away from all the conflicts and the struggles they went through, I tend to dream of living in that age and time. I have especially fallen in love with the feudal Japan era. That is I time I would have loved to live in. They had their problems too, but I would rather live with those problems than the ones we have today. In todays world the things people tend to lose their minds over, such as the lack of cellphone coverage and the silly things like that… Sure, I feel sorry for people when they are having a difficult time, but sometimes I just feel the need to really laugh when people seem to think it is the «end of the world» almost simply because their social media isn’t working 😂 How spoiled some people really are always makes me wonder if these people will ever make it if all the electricity suddenly went out 🤣

    She looks beautiful. I love that head sculpt. Nice job on the outfit too 👍 I can not count how many times one of my outfits have ended up with some sort of gap some where LOL! This is what I would have called a «prototype», and this is also one of the reasons why I use my worn out t-shirts when I start making a outfit. I usually use gray or white shirts, because those I can draw lines and make «notes» on. Once I have figured out what ever «problems» a design has, then I move on to using the actual materials. Most of the time I make massive improvements on a design from the prototype to the final product, because you never really see how the final product will look like until it is on the figure. Now as you van see where the gaps are, how the outfit is potentially restricting any movements and so on, you can make the changes on a second attempt on it.

It looks like the sewing is done by a drunk tailor to be quite honest, so don’t ask me to make a wedding dress LOL! Women back in the old days had to put up with a lot of crap, I think. The gentleman concept wasn’t very common those days, as most men was probably a-holes just like a lot of men are today. The difference between back then and today is that women have more rights and are more protected by the laws (in most countries anyway). Even in todays world it seams like women are some sort of property instead of humans with feelings and emotions. Back in the old days men thought that they could do what ever they wanted to the women, and a womans opinion carried no weight what so ever. I still see signs of that even today. Some women in todays world are lucky though, because there are actually some men out there that have come to their freakin’ senses and learned to respect women and treats them right! So thats a most welcome progress.

    He looks great! And I absolutely LOVE that rock too! I went to the near by beach and picked up a few last summer. Wish I could find a way to make a straight cut into them without using a angle grinder. Would be nice to get the bottom of them completely flat so that I could mount them to a base. I have thought about making rocks out of plaster, cardboard, paper and even styrofoam, but I am afraid that any paint will transfer over to a figure if I pose one on them. Thats why I prefer real rocks instead.

      That is a constant fear I have . . . you even have to be careful of clothes you buy for your figures. Sometimes the dye on the clothes sinks into the figure. Sigh. So many things to be wary of these days. I had that happen once on a TBLeague body, and I went like, "Really?" I was not a happy camper. I agree . . . the more natural, the more safer, and on top of it things just look more realistic. Some rocks really have tremendous character. 🤗🤗💖🤗🤗

      @@UndergroundActionFigures When it comes to the TBLeague bodies and dark colored outfits, I always wash them in cold water before I put them on a figure. I have learned my lesson on that part LOL. I also wrap the parts of a body in cling foil when I am using dyed leather/pleather materials. Most 1/6th scale clothes seem to be made in China, from what I can tell, and they manufacture things very cheap! There will always be some very tiny dye particles on the fabrics, so this is why I rinse the outfits well in cold water. I discovered quite the weird thing on one of my custom female figures not long ago. It wears this beautiful black dress. With the dress being black I naturally washed it before putting it on, and I checked the body regularly to see if the dress stained it. For some weird reason the body itself didn’t stain, but at the edge of the hands where the dress barely touched them there was some discoloration. How that happened is a mystery to me. You’d think that the silicone body was the first thing to get stained, but it looks clean. I find that pretty funny LOL.

    The figure looks great! I think that you can make one more figure out of this set though. Get a pair of jeans and shoes and you can make civilian Peter Parker. When he first got his powers he signed up for a wrestling cage match in the movie. In that scene he use his prototype suit (minus the hoodie). If I remember correctly he used the hoodie and jeans when going to school. I think he was wearing that hoodie in the scene where he gets bitten by the spider and get his powers.

      I saw the "clip" of him in the cage. I thought it was so funny. I think he said something not so kind to the wrestler. LOL That is a good idea!!! 🧐Let me see what I can do. Thank you!!! 🤗🤗❤️🤗🤗 That will have to be in the episode after this next one. 🤞🏼 Have an awesome day today!!!
