A Rural Spanish Retirement
Испания

Living the Dream. We live on a small fixed income so we are always looking at the most economic way to do things, to cut down on waste and to still achieve our goal of a better way to live.
These videos are just a little bit of a taste of our lives here. Nature, farming, keeping chickens, cooking with fire, making art or simply enjoying the local culture and a little bit of sunshine.

All Good Things Come to an End
Is this Goodbye. Well it might be. Things here have become increasingly busy with more stuff that I want to do rather than make films. I know, we'vve become like old friends over the years but you know, I may well pop in from time to time to keep you updated.

Apologies for the camera work on this one, don't worry it gets sorted after a few minutes! New plantings, hopefully foolproof this time.

wee're converting a vegetable garden into a dual purpose veggie and orchard space. There are a couple of fruit trees already in situ but raised beds have to be built and filled and more trees planted... and now is the season... if we don't do it now.. we have to wait an entire year to plant... so it's busy busy busy. And the courtyard is also getting an unusual fruit tree. If you enjoyed this v...

"or a game of cricket" 🤣
Fascinating!
Absolutely brilliant video!!!
Thank you for video. How many trees produced that amount and if u have type or species of olive tree...? M gracias !
Give this job and other farm work to young African men .
I was in Costa Blanca area for a little while. I can back to the South East US and they are putting in Olive plantations near our home. I am hoping that Cherimoya will work. I will be making my first pressing of Arbiquena Olive oil this year. Interesting content. Too bad I found it after you closed shop, but there's the older videos. Hope you got over your cold. Thanks for sharing information on Olives.
What part of Spain is this? Can you grow Cherimoya?
Extremadura, SW Spain.. not far from Portugal. Nope, too dry here..
It's tough to work in the garden when you have allergies but I've realised that the allergies are almost gone since I grow my own food.
Thank you for your video Jane, my wife and I have been following your videos for a while now. How about making a video where you show us more indepth study of your art 🎨, your paintings, perhaps a study on the process of creating a painting ? Sorry if you have already done something like this, or really don't want the extra work. Best wishes
Thanks for the videos! I thought we were retiring, jokes on me. Bought a neglected farm and getting it into shape is SO much work. Do what you can today when the tools and body cooperate. Next month we should be able to eat a deluxe salad just from the garden. I would love to have chickens but we want to travel...
It was so fun to follow you with all of your activities!! Having Grandchildren visit is wonderful! I’m sure you enjoyed living through their eyes. Your paintings are beautiful & you are very talented. I will watch your vlogs whenever you post. God’s Blessings 💜
Wonderful to see your video come up today, you must be so proud of your son, loved seeing you both in those jerseys... I can't believe how green it is there, our drought is awful this year, just hoping now that the El Niño is coming to an end that we may have some rain before summer. Look forward to catching up with your work and hope you enjoy life in the meantime
💛🎨
Hi Jane, snap, my garden looks like yours😆. Definitely plant in half full beds, i do 👍. Whenever you film, I'll watch, you always keep me interested 💕. Life should be enjoyable and you've worked long enough, if i had talent, i would paint to. I would love to see more of your art exhibition, thank you, Elaine
It’s always nice to see you Jane, I enjoyed what we saw of the exhibition. Don’t feel pressure to film, enjoy what you do and stop when you don’t ❤ I’m also an artist and a gardener, in Wales we are no where near planting out it’s been so cold but my allergies are punishing me already😂
Thank you very much for your video, it really shows the volume which is so important for us viewers to understand. I too want to be able to press out own oil. Here in Australia it costs around $370 / ton to get your olives pressed, but there is no guarantee that you will only get your olives / oil in those smaller quantities. 100kg of oil from 1000kg of olives, it is still a lot of work to harvest, transport, etc... Interesting. Let us know if you have set up for this with a follow up video please!
Nice Siamese I have one just like that😊
Looks good
Roosters beautiful
noy bad for 8.8% extraction rate, the fact is that ripe olive produce more per kg than green or unripe ones, bc unripe ones have more water fraction at 75% but the black or overripe have less than 50% so they yield more per kg. and if you only select the rip and over ripe you can reach 20% yield mb the professional machines says they get to 15% with mixed half green half black. i think the reason why traditionnaly htye pick half green aand half black is bc green have more of the aromatic phenols and give that hot taste of fresh olive while overripe will taste like processed oil and thus people will doubt it's home made
Thank you
I sometimes think I'd like to have a video channel but really I would just be recreating this one! Apart from the rain you get and we don't and your clay soil whereas ours is sand, our lives seem to be very similar and we reach the same conclusions. I have recently made the exact same decision about buying plants only to watch them die so this year's investments will be based on what is thriving here. Over the years we have been here I have watched several trees that I planted die so this year we are on our last attempt with a walnut and an apricot. Last year's peach is still hanging on and the fig that I planted three or four years ago is in leaf but is yet to produce fruit. Keeping my fingers crossed for your beautiful peace lilies. Judith x
Im in the same pickle with the pots! I've been starting to make hypertufas for my cactuses, but dont think i can make enough for all my plants, bushes, and tree etc. Luckily my landlord is an arborist and brings home the big pots from his work
I have raised beds and they shrink every year, I keep needing more and more dirt. I dont have a conpost pile going, I was thinking of getting a worm farm started to help build up the beds. We will see whoch way i go. Lovely garden nice video, im inspired!
I took an herb class and the teacher was saying that chamomile when steeped in luke warm water (not hot) can help with hydration. Like a natural Gatorade. I was wondering if it would help soils retain more water. I am going to add some of this cold brewed chamomile tea to help with the water retention of my soil. Also kelp powder is supposed to help with that. Ive been trying to figure out how to get tghe most out of the equation when i water my plants.
Like you we have been planting fruit trees (had to change the title of my last video) thanks for the comment regarding the Almond I better isolate mine from the irrigation. It had been on my mind but you decided it for me
I glad you figure out the camera!! You make your grounds very beautiful - hope the summer is kind to the plants. 💜
Good idea about growing what you know works. Can't wait to see the new firepit cooking some wonderful recipes.
Welcome back - always a delight, whatever the camera setting!
Gosh you're so kind ❤ it's good to have finally figured out what was going on with it 🤣
So serene & beautiful!! I love flowers! 💜
Lovely flowers 🌸🌼🌱🌝
It's beautiful, I love the resilience of wild flowers ❤
Happy Spring!
Another interesting video, we watch them all.
What a beautiful olive tree. I'd guess "he" is easily over 100 years old! In Cyprus, we also refer to them as wild olives if they haven't been grafted with another cultivar, which as you rightly said yields far bigger ones than the miniscule "wild" ones. Olives do bear fruit en masse every other year - one year poor yields, then a high yield, then low again.
So reminiscent of my Cyprus garden. I have a pomelo and bergamot there, as well as quite a few olives. With the plant that's losing leaves and looks a bit sunburnt, is the wall hot to the touch? When was the last time it had a feed?
The wall isn’t getting much sunshine at the moment, I think the problem is cold wind 💁 I have given it a feed today but it really is looking worse than when this was filmed. There are one or two ew leaves coming but not as many as I would like. Hey ho.. thank you so much for the good advice.
Just discovered your channel. Please do post updates! Youve just gained your 673rd subscriber (a real human one at that!)
Loved watching this and i have trees in Cyprus. Do they not use telescopic pickers where you are? Imagine a rake with plastic fingers that get the olives off the tree. Much quicker than manpower alone.
I really enjoyed your work... good luck you you all😊
Pretty courtyard
Please go to the doctor.
More trees is a good idea 🍋🌳🍊🌳👍🏼
Your property is fabulous!!! I enjoy listening to you describe each plant & their purpose. The courtyard is looking very nice! 💜
The meadow is beautiful❤️ my neighbours call my nigella and ox eye daisies weeds. They all belong to the plastic grass brigade. I fill my raised beds with plant cuttings and leaves then my daughters grass clippings, I only put a couple of inches of compost on and they do well. Even though you get rain any plants in pots next to walls are going to be shaded so you still need to water. The court yard is really coming together and the gates are fabulous💚
Pomelo is my favourite! I just ought two from Carrefour the other day!
You and that cat.... lol😊
Excellent video.❤
Beautiful 🌱
I’ve had a few occurrences of those visual disturbances too, like a crescent shaped zig-zagging sparkly thing. I don’t get the headache, though. I’ve wondered if it might have something to do with blood pressure. They go after around 15-20 minutes. I’ll be following your raised bed experiment with interest as we also gave up on growing veg because of the drought last year.
How interesting that you get the lights in your eyes but no headache.. I must admit the headache was a lot less severe than I was expecting. 🤷 I'm hoping the drought is over.. we've had a lot of rain this winter 👍
That's a form of migrane. I get that sometimes. No headache, just the irritation and weird feeling. Doctor says it is about stress but mostly not exactly IN stressful moments. Rest, close eyes, relax, wait. ;-)
