      @@tjpauto My point being that the F150 is used more as a family vehicle here. People who are towing or hauling much tend to go for larger trucks. We don't have a 3.5t or 4.5t cutoff, so the F150 is really being artificially slotted into a category that it wasn't designed for. They are really intended to maximize comfort at the expense of payload. Some guys do tow that kind of weight with a 150/1500 class, but normally you aim for 80% or less of tow rating for the maximum weight of your trailer. If you try and push to maximum tow rating you always run out of payload (unless you are a single, relatively light driver with nothing else in the truck that didn't come from the factory and manage to get exactly the right percentage of the trailer weight on the tongue). We have the advantage of having the F250/F350 and F450 available at not a huge additional expense.

    Maybe Ford is playing marketing games with axle ratings? I have a SWB XLT on order. Sum of front and rear axle weight ratings in Australia is 3447kg (Lariat LWB is 3583kg despite diffs being the same; maybe higher spring rates?). The same model as mine in the USA has front axle rated at 1773kg (1565kg Australia) and rear axle at 2045kg for max tow package (1882kg), totalling 3818kg. Australian models have 9.75 inch 3/4 floating diff standard (according to 4X4 Australia, Australian models are fitted wth Max Tow package standard). Payload for same model as mine in USA seems to be 932kg (albeit not sure if this includes fuel or other accessories Ford Aus have fitted); mine is 769kg, which is still a bit light on. Ram has higher total axle ratings (3630kg) despite diffs being smaller (Ram 8.5" and 9.25"; Ford 8.8" and 9.75").

    Ah no. Just because it can tow 3.5t, doesn't mean you should. The laws on towing in Australia are just plain crazy, we're one of the few countries in the world that allow the trailer to be heavier than the prime mover. Basic physics will tell you that towing something as heavy 3.5t with only a 3t landcruiser, is a bad idea. Look it up people! I always use 85% of the prime movers GVM to know what is a safe towing limit. So 85% of the gvm of a 300series is 2.7t, this should be the absolute maximum towing capacity. Even then, you can still be overloaded if you have too many accessories and gear in the landcruiser. And before thinking about a GVM upgrade, you should consider how much you value your new car warranty? Because, Toyota won't cover a new engine, gearbox or anything in the drivetrain if you have a GVM upgrade. And nor should they, because you're now operating the vehicle outside the manufacturers maximum limits.

    • @tjpauto
      @tjpauto Год назад

      Not correct about new car warranty , they must prove it was caused by the upgrade and if they can with Lovells upgrade for example they will honour the warranty

      @@SteveBurns80 didn’t mention the courts. I suggest you do some research , probably start on the lovells site and look up their warranty and the section in regards to oe warranty. ( that’s specific to them not other upgrades) as not every seller of upgrades goes through the same process and gets extra testing and documentation done that’s not required.

    • @SteveBurns80
      @SteveBurns80 Год назад

      @@tjpauto It has nothing to do with the any of the after market upgrades or the actual load. It's the fact that you've increasing the potential load capacity, outside of what the manufacturers specified. Yeah, it won't effect all of your warranty, parts that are unrelated to load carrying will still be covered, but If a chassis, engine or transmission failure occurs and the manufacturer sees that the vehicle has had GVM upgrade, then they have every right to pin it on the gvm upgrade, "operating outside of the manufacturer specifications" It's the same as if you failed to get your vehicle serviced on time. You just can't do this and expect them to cover a chassis, engine or transmission. And trust me, it's easy for a manufacturer to prove the cause of failure. The only time you might receive warranty, is if the failure happened to be a known defect or an actual manufacturing fault. But even then, would you really want to argue the toss, against a big car company that has already got the upper hand? And let's face it, most drivetrain failures are caused by user abuse. I'm all for upgrading the suspension ect, and I think GVM upgrades aren't a bad solution in all situations. However, people must be made aware of the realities when talking about new car warranty.

    • @rosewood1
      @rosewood1 10 месяцев назад

      Your comments are ignorant and simply wrong. The simplistic view that you shouldn't tow anything heavier than the towing vehicle is utterly wrong and simplistic. What actually matters is the design of both the towing vehicle and the vehicle being towed. And this includes many factors. Wheel base where the weight actually is e.g. down low up high or at the ends. The type of trailer matters. Is the braking system a fully integrated one? I used to tow a 31 foot yacht on a tri axle trailer that had dropped independent suspension half the weight was right over the leading axles. With sensor braking system this thing tracked like a train and I could and did regularly tow over mountain roads and highways. Trailer sway was impossible despite its weight. A badly setup 16 foot fishing boat or light caravan will however sway and you see such Muppets regularly on the Newcastle freeway. Often upside down. It isn't about the weight. It's the whole setup that matters. Just look at a semi hauling 50 ton!

  • @rvhtravels
    @rvhtravels Год назад

    Ram like to use smoke and mirrors to confuse the towing capabilities of their vehicles. You can never tow the rated amount due to the low payload capacity of the vehicles. I have found that the Payload is often around 1300 pounds on tbe 1500 Ram , once you factor in the trailers tongue weight say 700 pounds, plus 400 for passengers, not much left for storage in the bed. This means you run out of payload capacity long before you reach the advertised towing specs.

    Why are the US towing specs a lot higher than in Aus? Is it anything to do with engineering or just to get it all on a Class C license as opposed to the US. In the US this isn't an issue and electric brakes aren't even a requirement. Are we just being overly cautious?

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 Год назад

      More about the class C license. Australia has tow ratings that based on the European regulations. That actually makes the tow rating for smaller vehicles much higher in Australia than the same vehicle would get in the US. A lot of vehicles that have a tow rating in Australia are listed as not recommended for towing in the US. The US uses SAE J2807 which specifies braking distances from various speeds as well as acceleration times to speed. US also specs higher tongue weight as a percentage of trailer weight than Europe/Australia since we are allowed to tow at the same speed as other traffic and need the stability. However, we can also run singles and combinations up to 26,000 lbs on a standard passenger license. In the 37 states that have RV exemptions you can hook this up to a 14,000 lb GVWR truck (f350 DRW/F450/Ram 3500 DRW/GM 3500 DRW) and drive away legally on a regular passenger license: luxefifthwheel.com/products/best-constructed-luxury-toy-hauler/. The half ton trucks in Australia appear to be de-rated from American specs. Although anyone towing often or heavy in the US is not going to opt for a 1/2 ton. Mid-weight option would be a F250/F350 SRW, 2500/3500 SRW.
