Geoff Bunza led two clinics during the May 18th meet in Wilsonville. The first was on motorizing cranes, and involved a lot of interesting information about motors, and the second was on an Automatic Car Identification system for model railroads that is based on reading QR codes attached to the bottom of the cars.

Several railroads were open for operations sessions during the 2023 Pacific Northwest Region NMRA convention. I drew a slot on Thursday night, May 11th, on the Mud Bay and Southern, Jim Younkin's N scale basement and garage filling layout in Olympia, WA. The locations on the MB&S exist, or did at one point, but are not prototypically depicted. It is a very highly scenicked layout with lots of t...

Very nice garden railway. Greetings Frank
This is absolutely fantastic layout. The best.
10/10 weve got aquascaping, landscaping, bonsai, botany, and model rr all in one! Amazing!
Where are you guys located at?
Heard them say Oregon around an hour and 29
Super film - Like!
Amazing railroad ❤
Very beautiful layout and garden. Operations are cool. Bob is a terrible engineer, lol.
Absolutely beautiful railroad ,love the operations
I just love these old boys playing with their toys. I have a Fn3 layout myself but not on this grand scale. Beautiful garden layout.
That’s a very impressive model railway - great (natural) scenery, well planned track and station layouts, many logical tracks to shunt cars around and finally the waggon cards and walkie-talkies - real fun to watch!!! Thanks for sharing! Many greetings from an (envious😉) German G-scale railroader 🙂👋🏼
Don't have DCC turnouts? WTF lol just kidding, it's absolutely beautiful.
Rail fans like not be able to see the other side of things. Especially if your running operations and have a crew with working signals. A lot of ways to look at it. Great lay out. Very cool outside like that.
Awesome layout!
Your voice over remarks spoil the video. (No one cares about your technical issues with your equipment BTW.) Just because the layout is assembled in Texas doesn't mean all of the modules are from/or representing Texas. You must be new to the concept of modular railroading - and evidently you're not a fan of it. Folks have traveled from all over the country - and thus represent the roads THEY model in their own respects. It's not about building one giant realistic proto layout. This specific layout was about introducing people to model railroading operations. Your veiled criticisms makes me wonder why you bothered covering it with a video.
Beautiful!
Thank you for the great clinic and info
The tablets were used to control turnouts in the class yard.
Nice layout! But I'm disappointed at the lack of scenery.
A number of the modules included in this layout were built specifically for this event on a short deadline. That includes the two staging yards and the main classification yard of Dallas. Functionality trumped scenic detailing for a number of the modules present. This also goes to the function of this layout. It was on display to any convention goer that cared to visit, but its primary function was to be the 'game board' used to teach folks about operating under time table and train order rules. Scenery would have been nice for that function too, but industries and passing sidings were much more important to the operating plan.
so very cool! thanks for sharing!
"Did the Milwaukee Road and Rock Island ever operate near each other? I dunno. Maybe Chicago?" Ever hear of Iowa?
From experience it is not easy to participate in an operating session and video at the same time. Your Go-pro video is a nice way to show the action. Lovely layout. Thanks for posting.
Nicely done!
At time mark 2:19:10 the discussion highlights a problem that I used to have on my GC&SF layout during CC&WB operating sessions - where do you place car-cards for cars that have arrived at the yard but not yet been sorted (classified)? I don't have a box/tray specifically for the arrival/departure tracks because I don't want cars to be set out there. I solved the problem by adding an extra box just to hold car-cards for any cars that have not yet been sorted/classified. When cars arrive at the yard they are moved to any suitable yard track, and the cards are (temporarily) placed in the "To be classified" box. That way the yard operator can easily determine what he still has to sort out.
That is a very good idea.
It is sad the no one has commented on this... FYI: I highly enjoyed this type of video. the interaction with the crews adds to the story.
The bads, Camera angle was just a little off for us folks that would like a better view of the paper work. This is not to take away form the video at all. This helps bring a person into operations with the I'm here feeling. Like to see more videos like this, Thanks.
We'll see what we can do about that - both the paperwork view and more of them.
Love the throttle. I'm going to have to make one.
We just use a thing called a Hold box and it works just fine, We do not care if the car is on hold or not. If it it in the Pull or Pick box we get it. Or on a switch list why does it matter?
Great of you to share, I enjoyed viewing.
