Bellevue Baptist Church Organ Dedication - May 21, 2000
Organist Kenneth Varner performs on the (then) brand new Allen organ installed mere days before the organ dedication at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tennessee, on May 21, 2000. The organ has 365 stops, more than 250 speaker cabinets in seven chambers, and five manuals, making it (one of) the largest Allen organ installations to date.

PDP-8/M Plays Popcorn - Gershon Kingsley (Hot Butter version)
Просмотров 11 тыс.Год назад
A popular tune written by Gershon Kingsley and popularized by Hot Butter, played on a period-correct 1970s minicomputer! With a new (and very simple) audio interface from the PDP-8/M's Omnibus connected to a Cordovox amplifier cabinet, sound quality is much improved over previous AM radio experiments. This computer boots OS/8 off of a Raspberry Pi running SerialDisk, using a laptop as a serial ...
PDP-8/M Plays Sea Shanty 2 - Computer Remix

A popular RuneScape tune on a 1970s minicomputer! With a new (and very simple) audio interface from the PDP-8/M's Omnibus connected to a Cordovox amplifier cabinet, sound quality is much improved over previous AM radio experiments. This computer boots OS/8 off of a Raspberry Pi running SerialDisk, using a laptop as a serial terminal. MUSIC.PA was written in the 1970s and supports four notes of ...
Maple Leaf Rag - SimH PDP-8 (updated)
Просмотров 4527 лет назад
Using a few more lines of code in the SimH PDP-8 simulator, I was able to count elapsed microseconds instead of using elapsed instructions to estimate time. This proved to be far more accurate, and hopefully the results show! The project can be found at github.com/drovak/music
Maple Leaf Rag - SimH PDP-8
Просмотров 4067 лет назад
I made a hacked version of SimH's PDP-8 simulator which outputs timestamps every time a certain instruction is executed. When used with the music program, MUSIC.PA, as well as some post-processing, audio files can be generated from the simulator without ever stepping into an analog interface (such as an AM radio as with the original hardware). With the digital files, further filtering can be us...

PDP-8/M Plays God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.8 лет назад
First new music video in a while, just in time for this holiday season. You're hearing a real PDP-8/M minicomputer play God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen wirelessly via a restored Philco "Hippo" radio. I arranged the carol and uploaded it to the PDP-8/M running MUSIC.PA, a music compiler written in the 1970s.
SimH PDP-8 Spacewar Demo
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.9 лет назад
Trial run of Spacewar running under SimH's PDP-8 simulator. The VC8-E option was created using Processing 2.0. Its purpose is only to display points (read from a pseudo-TTY) on the phosphor-like screen and to send keyboard commands to SimH (also via the PTY) in lieu of physical front panel switches. Minimal rewriting of Spacewar was required to support this virtual VC8-E. Though this hasn't bee...
Punched Card Reader with Arduino Interface
Просмотров 9 тыс.9 лет назад
I recently purchased an old punched card reader (Documation M-1000-L) off eBay. Wanting to use it to read in some punched cards, but lacking an appropriate interface to original hardware, I opted to use an Arduino with some simple port manipulation to read in data, column by column, card by card. The Arduino does some basic card decoding and prints out the punched card data over the serial port...
Documation Punched Card Reader
Просмотров 15 тыс.9 лет назад
This is a 1970s Documation M-1000-L punched card reader, capable of reading up to 1000 cards per minute. The reader in this video is operating in local mode only, but will eventually be interfaced to a PDP-8/M minicomputer.
PDP-8/M Controls Christmas Tree Lights
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.9 лет назад
I programmed a PDP-8 to talk to some individually-addressable LEDs based on the WS2801 LED controller. These drivers are controlled over a two-wire SPI bus. This is quite easy to bit-bang, even for a 1970s minicomputer. I am using the two control flag outputs of an M1705 dual 12-bit output interface to control the data and clock lines, and went ahead and powered the whole thing from the PDP-8 a...

The Skaters' Waltz - Story & Clark Player Piano

I recently acquired a 1915 Story & Clark player piano and did a little repair, enough to get it operating for the holiday season. I hope to eventually redo all of the pneumatics when I have more time.

This brings back some fond memories! I worked at Aerospace Corp. in 1984, and a lab partner used to have fun with this on a machine we usually used for realtime data collection on a vacuum chamber. The program he used required that core memory be installed, so after swapping a couple of boards and booting, he'd play things like the 3rd Brandenburg Concerto.

What exactly does the computer do? Is it forming the sounds according to external input, or is it playing content of its memory?

    • @kyleowen1643
      @kyleowen1643 Год назад

There is a music compiler/player program that takes in a fairly simple music description that represents the notes within sheet music, churns out the note lengths and frequencies in memory, then jumps to the player portion to generate the notes in real time. If you search for DECUS 8-804 online, you can see a PDF that describes the program pretty well.
