Good video, seems like a worthwhile purchase. The fortress series seems like a good series of books. As always I enjoy the info on military, tactics and terrain, something that's lacking in the newer Tolkien rpg books. Nice expansion of Tolkien's work.
I haven't played MERP in years, it was always a bit of a love hate relationship - I liked the rules but they were always an odd fit for Tolkien in many ways. I've been reading through this one and Laketown recently with a view to doing some stuff, just not sure what rules yet, I might try a few out in the end (I have 3 in mind!). Anyway great vid, thanks a lot for reviewing this.
Thanks, I haven't played MERP in about 20 years and needed to do something with my collection. I do think that MERP is far better than the RPG games that came out later for LOTR as they were more based on Peter Jackson's Movies than on the actual source material.
@@romandacil3984 I haven't played MERP in about the same time period as you... But the modules are looking great to me after all this time, and I barely ran any of them back then. System-wise I am currently thinking that something like Age of Shadow or Beyond the Wall could do a Tolkien setting justice. I know my group will want to play the One Ring but I find it a bit restrictive and clunky even though there are some interesting things in it that could be fun for the odd one off. I like the way you have been pointing out where modules have wandered from Tolkien too, very enjoyable vids.
I forgot to mention that I paif $14.75 CAD plu taxes for this module. So pretty good value considering the size of this module.
I am curious as to the final fate of Wyatan, and what he did in Harshandatt between 1940-1999 SA.
According to MERP he fell in combat to the Numenoreans after Akhorahil declared independence from Numenor. Wyatan forced marched his army but failed to stop the Numenorean landing in Ciryatandor. The Numenoreans caught up with to Wyatan's Army and utterly destroyed it. He was killed and his body withered away as he had a lesser ring of power. His Harshandatt campaign took almost 60 years to complete due to the enemy forces and the terrain.
@@romandacil3984 Thanks! I always wondered why Akhorahil stopped conquering lands after Harshandatt since harad was pretty big and Ancalimon wouldnt attack Ciryatandor until 2280 SA, any ideas?
@@romandacil3984 Also do u think you can do a video on the Harshandatt module for merp? it gives major north african vibes
@@user-rr2ui5dx5y Are you talking about the Greater Harad module by MERP or the Harshandatt module created by Fans and released on the internet? I used to belong to a group but it got to be much away from Tolkien. I do have most of the Harshandatt module printed.
@@romandacil3984 Yea I was talking about the fan module "Harshandatt", it had really cool details about Wyatan's attack on the region and I think it could be really cool to hear what your thoughts are on that one especially since you have most of the Harshandat mod printed. Just a humble request from a university lad :)
Probably my favorite of the MERP modules I never actually played, though I've re-used the citadel maps at least 3 times for other games. I love the back story they give for Akhorahil as the cousin of the Witch-king. I would still like to run a full campaign in Southern Middle Earth if I could find the players.
The way MERP fleshed out the back stories of all the NAzgul was great. Too bad Tolkien had never gotten aroun to them. I had hoped that MERP would continue expanding their reach into other parts of Middle-earth but atlas it was not to be.
There is a lot of information in that supplement. It provides a scope for how overwhelming Sauron's forces could be at their peak.
They definitely went all out on this module. It would have been great to see what MERP would have come out with had they continued on this path.
The ICE MERP stuff always confused me (in the late ‘80s as a kid and still honestly now as a 50 year old)! Like, if I want to run something focused on Ithilian… I’ve zero idea which MERP stuff to utilize! Maybe Gates of Mordor….but surely there ought be more? Or are there none? Who knows? It’s all so dang opaque!
I always thought that they underutilized the Ithilien area with their 1640 Time line. Gates of Mordor and Ghosts of the Southern Anduin are the only 2 Ithilien Adventure Modules. They also released Minas Ithil as a City (which I am slowly getting to). MERP should have done more in this region with a 2800-3019 timeline. The best MERP stuff seems more focused on places like Cardolan and Rhudaur.
We got a fair degree of use out of this as much of our campaign was in Mirkwood.
Cool, i always considered it to be a place to rest up and resupply.
Your right it's too massive for what Tolkien had in mind
Heh. I see you’ve been ‘fan-corrected’ on at least a bit of your Tolkien pronunciation. Heheh. Hey! Me too! All my life! Even when you’re a fan!😂 Having said that….”brigand” is a common term. It’s “BREAH-gund”or “BRI-guhnd” (more usually) , (quickly smashed together), brother. 🙂 Cheers, and thanks for the fun vid. Also…despite me being 50 and playing MERP way back, and would use much more rules-lite systems now…. Yes, yes, yes…Bree and Trollshaws!…yes! Both best of the best!
Thanks. My pronunciation does indeed suck on more than one occasion (and language). Glad you liked the video.
Looks like you had a nice trip Roman! I can't remember this module, but it does look useful with all the maps. And ,as all the MERP books, it seems like iust a good read in general. Looks very different from what you could see in the P.J movies, but I think it's more suitable for RPG play. Though I would have dropped it somewhere else. Great video and welcome back!
Exactly my thought. It would work great in Harondor kind of like Krak des Chevaliers.
I have used this module a few times but it is better suited somewhere else in Middle Earth. it has been a while since i read it but I remember it being larger because it was a central reserve for the local region but i agree it is to much for a watch tower.
I think this owuld have been better off in Harondor as a frontier fortress like Kerak Castle.
@@romandacil3984 I could see Rhovanion or Harondor as a central fortress and training base.
Awesome to hear the travel stories, cheers Roman.
Thanks, I need to go back in order to visit L'Anse aux Meadows and St.Pierre & Miquelon .
Another one I've re-used multiple times for other games despite not actually playing it in MERP.
Make's two of us. The Fortress series was never given the chance to it's full potential since the company ceased production. So many sites, so many lost possibilities.
I never got around to playing this one or using it. But it would be useful in Harondor
@@yourseatatthetable They definitely could have produced other fortress books like for Durthang and Cair Andros.
Hey Roman Great to see your east coast travel adventures.... And thanks again for posting MERP content.
Newfoundland was pretty cool. I would go back there to see L'Anse aux Meadows and take a trip out to St.Pierre & Miquelon (2 Islands still owned by France)
>2024 >me noticing em taking part in the siege
Dude i swear after a few of these made your list the price jumped up on e bay lol. Ive been watching this on e bay, as im trying to re-collect some of these. And some of your favorites seem to jump right after i see you doing a flip through. You should have 10k subs man this channel rocks.
Also you should do some live plays man, and some rules walkthroughs, like a create a character, and a combat walkthrough. Maybe a solo game. A mas combat system video. Also just so you know there is a little community in the Fantasy Grounds Virtual Table top community that are converting rolemaster for that particular VTT. just in case you wanted to try a VTT.
@@xaxzander4633 I am planning to do that once I have gone through the entire series. I also need to explain how i did the military campaigns.
Thanks, I would have attributed the prices to Justin Trudeau economics. Thank god I bought the ones I was missing from Ebay years ago.
"Someone named Elmore" 😄 - Yeah, never heard of him; what a loser.
Now you made me look him up. Mostly D&D and Heavy Metal artwork which is pretty cool. The cover art for River Running must have been a bad art day for larry because it's pretty lame compared to his other work.😂
To answer your question, I believe it's PEH-lar-geer. Also I believe it's CAR-doh-lan, and RRRHU-dah-ur 😄
Like I said, my pronunciation sucks. I have been saying Pelargir (Peh-lar-grrr) wrong for years or I used a soft 'C" instead of a hard "C" for Celeborn/Celebrimbor
That's some hoard of orcs
Wish I had more archers.
Good catch!
Blink and you miss it.
@@romandacil3984 Oh absolutely
Awesome collection dude!
Thanks, would love to get more of them.
Gorgeous collection Roman!
Thanks, I need to get more of them.
Good video, I have been thinking of buying the fortress series. Seeing that there is a lot to the module. I think I will get the PDF of the module.
Definitely the Fortress series (for the most part) are great. I wish MERP had doen a few more of them.
What system do you use for the war gaming stuff?
I tried mixing the rules of War & Peace (Avalon Hill) with MERP (lot of modifications), then used Fresno Gaming - THE CIVIL WAR game : Brother against Brother which allowed more tactical control and casualties % of the force. Finally MERP came out with it's own system in 1995 with the Kinstrife Module.
@@romandacil3984 Hmm good to know, I have like 6 different ones. Cant seem to find a great one, although I'm leaning to Warhammer 1st ed, a box set. Ive only played MERP once or twice in the 80's although im recollecting it now. I set the module you mentioned for notifications on e-bay. Ill check it out.
My favorite of the citadel modules. Never played it in MERP, but I've re-purposed this fortress at least 3 times for other games.
This one and Weathertop are my favorites in this group.
Wonderful Roman ty. I need an ancient mountain fortress in the current campaign - I might add these guard towers. Ty again
These two are great I wish I had used it more often.
HI Roman, I have enjoyed your posts, and appreciate all the work that goes into them and thank you for keeping MERP alive. I am looking to run a MERP campaign in Roll20 and would to get your insight on a few things. let me know if you can help. Thanks in advance.
Hey Gaffer, not a problem. It has been a while since I last played MERP. My kids are more into Video Games and Tiktoc which is a shame since I have so much LOTR stuff.
I appreciate the videos you put up so much. I am new sub but I have always looked for channels just like this. I enjoy the guides and lore they add to Middle Earth good/bad. You have great knowledge of the material which is key. I’m currently going through the backlog of videos you have made. Thank you again!
Thanks, means a lot. I think MERP did a pretty good job fleshing out Tolkien's world. The Jackson movies were excellently done as well and GW (Warhammer) has done their best. Tolkien would have disloked a lot of it but he was a pretty harsh critic on his work and always fiddling with it.
Really appreciate these videos Roman ty!
Thanks.
Never used this in MERP, but I've converted the maps to other settings.
There is an issue with how many users they have to use the seeing stones. Also Angmar could have had an army as a distraction that pulled all of the palantir uses. One force pretending to threaten Fornost while the real force moved south to amon sul.
That's possible. The Appendixes make it sound like the Angmarrim crossed over from the Angle into Southeastern Cardolan attacking Amon Sul from the south. MERP says they attacked in the Winter.
An excellent series that I wish had continued. So many fortresses warranted their own book.
I wish they had done the Lonely Mountain, Helm's Deep, Durthang, Barad Dur, as a stand alone. I could go on
Mouth of the Entwash is cool. Middle-Earth was never about treasures, so that doesn't count. The MERP adventures to me were always just key moments for a short campaign. And most of them work very well for that.
I always thought of the Mouths of the entwash as a place to hide out when you pissed off the wrong person and have some fun while your at it. Kind of like the Dead Marshes. But I had to start somewhere in the rankings.
The reason why there are so little easterlings featured in the Gondorian battles is that Sauron ordered them to attack Erebor so at the time Minas Tirith is besieged most of them are actually preoccupied cutting off the armies of light from potential reinforcements coming from the lonely mountain
He did have an army of Easterlings attack the Kingdom of Dale. But in the ROTK Chapter "Battle of Pelennor Fields", Tolkien stated that "Gothmog Lt of Morgul flung them into the fray; Easterlings with Axes & Variags of Khand". There was an Army of Easterlings & Orcs in Anorien that was suppossed to bar help from Rohan but was waylaid by the Rohirrim after the Pelennor and fled back towards CAir Andros. Also there was a force of Easterlings & Orcs that tried to Ambush Aragorn's Army in Ithilien as it marched to the Black Gate. Another Army of Easterlings also crossed the Undeeps into the Wold Of Rohan but were met by Ents.
Loved this one, ty Roman!
Thanks
This was a great adventure to run. I remember playing it with you.
It was a lot of fun playing with you, Rich and the other guys at Carleton
I didn't know that this module exist until a couple months ago. I was scanning through the Trove and saw some MERP products that I didn't know of. Back in the day, I had to drive 50 miles to get to the only gameshop that I knew of. And when the Gameshop closed I lost my only connection with retail RPG's. I just don't remember it being in any of the ICE catalogs.
Your right this wasn't in any MERP Catalogue that I had seen. The only Iron Crown catalogues that i had seen were from 1987 and 1997 (I still have them). Never had to go too far to get to a RPG store. I used to go at least once a month to see if there were any new releases which is how I found this one,
I always wanted to play in the time between hobbit and lord of the rings, but most merp material is set in the 1640ies and kinda hard to adapt for later tim3s.
I understand why they chose the 1640 as their timeline but do wish they had ventured into other timelines as well. 1st and 2nd Age adventures would have cool. Between the Hobbit & LOTR would have been ineteresting as Sauron was now out in the open.
Have you ever considered to do a video where you suggest which MERP publication could be the most useful for game masters of The One Ring rpg 2nd edition? The main setting of the 2nd edition of the game is Eriador.
I did download a copy of the Cubilcle 7 Adventures in ME but haven't gotten around to reading it. I read some of the stuff from Decipher games but it lacked the depth that MERP had. I should give the LOTR RPG from the Free League a try.
What a Mammoth task, ranking all these great modules! I would've liked to see a complete Rhun guide. Cubicle 7 never even went there, maybe Free league can hold the license long enough to explore Rhun. Tales of the Westmarch seems very modular (or free form), I haven't read it but it seems similar to the Mirkwood campaign for AiME, easy to use in conjuction with other books. I always like the modules that included military info like the North Marches and Necromancer's Lieutenant. I've been low on social media and YT for a while, so I'm binging your videos that I missed. Great video and breakdown of the modules!
Thanks, I wish they had done more for Rhun like they did for the Far South. I was always surprised that they completely missed Khand and barely touched Harondor.
I loved Shogun! Great game; not sure where I lost it. Think it was left in my mom's old house and she got divorced and it disappeared.
I stopped talking to my brother and his daughter stopped talking to me (go figure). She not only kept my Shogun game but also my Beatles, KISS Alive, Eagles and Forgotten Rebels records. Shogun was a great board game to play.
We really liked Trolls of the Misty Mountains as a nice low-level series. And I converted selected adventures from lots of these to Old School Essentials a couple years back, including Mouths of the Entwash, which is easily ported to other settings. And I've recycled too many MERP maps to count. As for favorites, we liked the various things set in and around Mirkwood, as that was our main setting. Gundabad was a blast and we also had lots of fun with Perils on the Sea of Rhun. I wanted to run all the southern modules together for higher levels, but our main campaign ended before we got there.
Trolls of the Misty Mountains had some nice low level adventures. It's too bad they never reworked it to match the other modules and re-released it.
Tharbad has probably my all-time favourite McBride artwork -- also enjoyed the layout however I never played it because I always wanted to use it a reborn city in the Fourth Age, a campaign I had tonnes of ideas for and reams of nots on but never realised. Dagorlad I enjoyed, and Bree was the first module I ever bought, not long after it came out. Looks pretty battered now but I loved how you could raid the barrow downs and gear up your party. Then I realised what they meant in the module, that anyone who did that probably wouldn't be welcome back without first giving up the grave-robbed items - that lead to some interesting encounters. Not to mention Gondorian artifacts being found on ne'er-do-wells within the walls of Minas Tirith. That was fun to run as a GM - they thought they were scot-free...lol. I think one of them is still in gaol.
That was a cool overview and a reminder of all the modules I bought but never used -- and still have, I might add. I'm going back to the earlier compendious review. Thanks again for the content.
I never got to use half of what I bought either but I always enjoyed reading them and looking at the maps.
I agree with your order, very good video.
I'm using Dark Mage of Rhudaur for the grand scheme of things in TA 1640 period using the Blood Wrights awakening one by one due to worship to the Mistress of Pestilence (LOTRO) after the great plague. Only Naranthur is awake and he is not under control yet. Building up some some conflict along the great east road with the Northmen/Hillmen/Dunlendings with the rare sprinkling of some Warg Riders. Playing in DND 3.5, Rhudaur is quite ideal for this rule set since there is much unknown.
Sounds cool. I played a campaign in which Arthedain was able to reunite parts of Cardolan and then Angmar was aroused to invade. I sent a newly formed Army of Cardolan into the Angle to meet King Brogha of Rhudaur in a battle around the Tirthon. Securing victory allowed me to consolidate Cardolan and the Angle.
Do you only have the 21 modules? There are 29 adventure modules released by Iron Crown. I didn't see Hillman of the Trollshaws, and I thought every and their Granny had that one. My favorite is Woses of the black Forest, and my least favorite is Forest of tears.
I did a seperate ranking for the 9 big Adventure modules. They were tweeners (too small for a Campaign Module and too big to be a Ready to Run Adventure Module) You can see that ranking here ruclips.net/video/6I0qTi0Khv4/видео.html Woses of the Black Wood I had fun with but for me it lacked the big time campaign that Raiders of Cardolan had. Forest of Tears was not very well received by the group I played with.
Very interesting, I never knew about this module but now realize I have it on the PC. It looks to be a solid module with some good fleshed out adventures. I always wondered if Mr. Tolkien had lived longer how much more information regarding middle earth and the creatures that live there would we have seen. I wonder if ICE will ever get back a license to print MERP products. I think it would be an excellent money spinner. Really enjoyed this breakdown, one of my favorite's thanks Roman.
It would be nice if Iron Crown got the license back but with the success of the JAckson movies the price would be much higher than it was in the 80's. Also wish Tolkien had spent more time on fleshing out the various locations in Middle-earth but then again it is so vast it would take several lifetimes.
Never heard of this, but I just downloaded it and will bind it later this week. Thanks!
I do wish ICE had released this back in the day. The layouts are really good in this one.
