From Hanseatic House to MAS - 500 Years of Antwerp History
This video explores the rich history of Antwerp's MAS (Museum on the River), located in the vibrant "little island" district, which was once a bustling port area. The MAS now stands on the site of the former Hanseatic House, a significant structure with deep ties to Antwerp’s maritime history.
The story begins in Bruges, a major European trading hub during the Middle Ages due to its strategic location. The Hanseatic League, a powerful network of merchant guilds, established a Kontor in Bruges, marking the city's importance in European trade. However, as the Zwin inlet silted up, Bruges' trade declined, prompting the Hanseatic League to relocate its Kontor to Antwerp in the 16th century.

There’s one quality that I can see from Nello. He’s very polite when talking to adults, even though Cogez and Hans give him a difficult time. He greeds the shop assistant and thanks for giving him a canva. This politeness is deeply valued in Asian culture even today, it’s striking for me that this action could be widely seen in the 19th century of Europe, particularly Flanders, Belgium. However, in the modern era, such gestures are gradually forgotten among Westerners. His little action little action signifies that “even though a person pursues a big dream, he must never omit small details and kindness”, a Chinese proverb.

The newly erected crocodile-like statue of Patrush, which was torn down from the Japanese monument at the end of this video, is extremely unpopular with the Japanese who are familiar with this story. It is also believed that the statue was created for China's money. The popularity of “A Dog of Flanders” has been declining in Japan. The poor conduct of the Antwerp administration is the reason for its declining popularity in Japan. It may be too late to remedy this...🥲

I am usually not a fan of contemporary style buildings as I find them rarely to have a "soul" (for lack of a better word) compared to historic buildings or just older buildings in general... But the MAS is not one of those! From the moment it opened, I fully embraced it as a part of the city! It's like it was meant to be built on at very spot and in a way had always been there. I love, love, LOVE it!!

The background information for the videos on this channel comes from a variety of sources, including books, research papers, and online resources. Most of the information about the history of the 'Hanseatic House' comes from a book written in Dutch called "Het Eilandje" by Kris Gielen. Information about the MAS is sourced from the museum itself. Many old photos and maps are sourced from felixarchief.antwerpen.be, the online version of the historical archives of the city of Antwerp.

Regarding your remark about Flanders, I presume this refers to the section about the missionary Eloi (St. Eligius), who embarked on a mission trip to Flanders. With this sentence, I do not imply that Antwerp was located in Flanders; it was located in Brabant, as you indicate. In the early Middle Ages, the Scheldt River was the border between Flanders and Brabant. During Eloi's mission trip in the region of Flanders, he traveled as far as the area around Antwerp, which was located right at the border.

There is no proven threshold at which booze is risk-free, according to the WHO. “We cannot talk about a so-called safe level of alcohol use. It doesn’t matter how much you drink-the risk to the drinker’s health starts from the first drop of any alcoholic beverage” Antwerp keeps persecuting cannabis culture, while pushing the hard drug that is alcohol.
