A fantastic lesson, and I thank you, Sir. Very concisely explained.
@@ruthhancock7665 thank you
Man, im in!!🎸 You’re a fantastic guitar player, thank you for sharing your guitar wisdom with us! 👏🏼🙏🏻
@@YOSOYPUIA Happy to have you onboard!
Jack, I cribbed this sound into my vocabulary from your lesson on Stella Blue (for the B7). It’s slowly made its way into my playing in some other contexts (like any Andalusian progressions). Awesome llesson to develop those sounds. Thanks!
@@marcsullivan7987 So happy to open a few doors for players
Thanks fellow great lesson for my skill set… very helpful
@@markmazzy5667 stoked!
I’ve watched twice. What a fabulous demo you did. Tx!
@@joetoe9207 Thanks Joe
I am new to your site. Awesome lesson!
@@Morant61 glad you liked it
mind blown!!
@@mike_wright thanks brother
@jacksnax4guitar460 No problem, bro. The original is a masterpiece, but yours sent chills down my spine. I love the way you improvise. I've been spending the last three days trying to learn this.
@@mike_wright tabs available btw
Jack, I’m here to boost signal with a comment and a like. But I’m just scratching my head with everyone’s explanation of harmonic minor… it’s SOOOO WEEDY.
@@scottklandl488 I understand
Minor scale (6th mode or major scale) with a major 7th.
You’re supposed to be on VACATION!!!
I got the relative minor of the key but are you suggesting to only apply it when over the fifth chord?
How’s that jet lag?
Knew the chords, changes, etc. but, your description and walk thru is really informative and I'm grateful for the lesson
@@user-wu1bm1bh4x Great!
Can you remake this tutorial because it’s kind of confusing.
Thanks for another good one. Hope you have a fun trip.
Thank you SO MUCH! You're a great teacher and an awesome player.
With the caveat that this is not in the least bit criticism...it is an incredible testament to Garcia's playing...I have watched three videos by different people on this solo, and each one has offererd some subtlety that the others missed. And, each was so accurate that I didnt even notice these details until I watched the next persons video. These nuances that are so subtle when overlooked, turn out to be HUGE when applied as well, which is also incredible. You don't necesarily notice them when they are missed, but the impact when incorporated is massive. An example is the opening 6th slide. The first video had it as a single note slide. Sounded perfectly accurate. But, when I watched this and heard the the f# harmony, it was so obviously essentila to make it magickal. The fact that I have been studying and playing this music for decades, and am still surprised by the genius of it, is beyond words. (and btw, Jack, when I say each person missed something, you had it all notewise, but the phrases were played in different positions in one of the other videos, which I feel was more ergonomic, and maybe tonally better because it utilized the thicker strings. It may sound corny, but the joy and satisfaction I got just form realizing that the opening notes are actually a 6th, was incredibly gartifying, so thank you for that. Garcia would hat us for figutring his stuff out note for note, and I do try to avoid it when actually performing, but I just HAVE to know everything as precisely as possible, and thank you so much for filling in so many of the things that have evaded me for years. Fucker.😈)And actually after writing this, I realized you werent transcribibg the 91 solo the others were, so I guess you actually didnt miss anything, lol
@@Illumignostic yeah…I’m just making up my own solo in the style of JG
Awesome stuff! Thanks. My recent discovery of your channel has been a total revelation. I am a bit of jazz guitar snob, but I cut my teeth as a teenage guitar player on the Dreadful Grapes (as I affectionately call them-it’s a love/hate relationship) but your lessons have inspired me to return to their catalog with renewed enthusiasm and vigor. Fun stuff. I love Weir’s (essentially jazz) approach to the instrument as much as Garcia’s approach and the interchange between them is truly sui generis and unparalleled. Thanks so much for these lessons! I’ll find a way to contribute something to your efforts! Cheers and enjoy your time off. Meanwhile, I’ll be working through your excellent content. -JGC PS: What do you use for drums on the backing tracks you make?
@@JGCanning Thanks for the feedback…wonderful to have you stop by. I hope you’ll scope out a bunch of stuff and join us for an office hours session…. BTW all backing tracks with drums are from Jeff Williams…wonderful and generous guy! Props to you for dropping some Latin…been a while, makes me think of my dad.
I have a 1956 Les Paul Special myself, the original bridge pickup on it is INCREDIBLY bitey. It's the best sounding P90 I've ever had, and I've had a 1953 Goldtop as well.
@@svtman93 great stuff for sure

That version off the Skull & Roses album... is just amazing. so are your videos. thanks for taking the time.
@@thelatenightbar Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Cool...love the harmonic minor sound and always wanna learn new ways to use it (or maybe just the correct way). I really appreciate it.
OMG! What is at 2:37 right after that you go to the first fret before the D
Not sure what you mean… just playing the riff.
@@jacksnax4guitar460 Thanks for the response! You bend the F# on 6 and then play something before sliding into D and no matter how many times I watch it in slow motion I don't get it.
@@ramblinwes7853 it’s the B note on the A string
That opening jam... as usual.. was just rockin' Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
how much is a one hour lesson
Depending on the number of lessons…80-100/lesson
This was very helpful - when you talked about how you approach developing a solo by breaking it into chunks. Not just that, of course. It is helpful to hear (again 😁) your council that putting in the hours of ass time is a must. And from where I sit you are very giving in your willingness to come on again and again and treat everyone with respect, and offer your advice to us "younger" players. Not only do I get a lot of knowledge and encouragement, but you reenforce my belief that there are people with great big hearts out there. Thanks Jack!
@@gregfgermano8743 Thanks man!🤘🏻🎸🍄
Always loved it when Jerry would rock out like that :)
The opening jam at the beginning of this was awesome.
I just want to know what scale jacksnax is using on the 9th fret from the 10th fret into the 12th fret again when he goes down the scale is that an A major or an A minor?’
@@anthony.welch628 the whole song uses the modes of A major (and some E blues)
Oh ok thanks that’s what I thought but I wasn’t 100% sure?!
But when & where do you use the B Dorian & the E mixolydian?’
@@anthony.welch628 Over the B chord and over the E chord…
Great lesson with some invaluable licks and theory

Ooooohhhhh !!!! You are good asf on guitar 🎸 I don’t know if anyone ever told you that.
@@tonyboehmer9311 Thanks for the kind words T!
YES!!!!
I love the Bob approved ironic touch of dawning the beast Maiden shirt for a lesson teaching what is most likely Weir's most tender ballad 🙂 Classic. Both lessons on LLR were incredibly insightful as always Jack, helped me finally polish some of those rougher turd sounding sections I was phoning in since I first started learning this one back in 92. Once more I love the work you do here as I have said in passing numerous times before, thanks as always for your generosity in sharing the knowledge and the absolutely humbling chops you teach and share here with the community. You are amongst that slice of what can be good with the Social Media/Webosphere. Enjoy the summer Señor!
@@pacosalvaje5066 My pleasure
I love this guy! My best friend who was a dead head while I growing up in upstate New York would have been impressed with this guy, and he would have been honoured to have met him before he passed in May of 1996 from congestive heart failure?’❤
Big thanks Jack - missed it live but caught it this morning. They really extend that ascending line cliché! Thanks for the detailed explanation.
Very welcome
I just wanted to say that this guy is a genius, and I like his version or rendition even though this is not exactly the way he played?’ I actually like this guys version of Jerrys solo for Althea!’ But it sounds like he added his own twist to it or improvised it from the original one?’ My grandmother who died in 2013 her mother’s maiden name was Garcia!’ I’m still having trouble
Thank you Jack
Awesome....Thanks a lot Jack.
Nice..
Great video Jack. I wish we could see the live comments while replaying the video.
@@sirbergersworth I think you can select that as an option…I try to reiterate them but often forget
@@jacksnax4guitar460 you may have to turn that on on your end. I don’t see the option like I do on other live replays.
Jack, I just discovered your channel and it's amazing. Question: how do you get that "spank" on your attack when you play this solo? Is just the hot pups on your 335? You mentioned an envelope filter but I'm not hearing that effect.
@@TallGuitarBoy There’s some compression and the envelope follower and the phaser. But a lot of it is in the right hand….the pickups are not that important but the placement of them and which combination is used is. The 335 has pretty tame pickups. The center position on a 335 has that snappy sound…
I have never heard anyone play quite like you. It's truly amazing to me. There is no one teaching GD like this on YT. I've been working on this video alone for at least 4 weeks. There's so much in here, I fear I'll never get it all. At first I thought it was over my head because you don't spoon-feed the lessons. I have to rewind and use my ears to get this stuff. It's a lot of work but I think it might be better for real learning. I can't thank you enough. One question: towards the end when you are doing groups of six (I haven't mastered the groups of five yet!) you seem to be playing an F# major scale. Why is that when the key is E major/B mixolydian? And, if indeed you are playing in that key, why does this work?
@@geoffreyadams7619 I do not think I’m playing F# major…perhaps minor as that would be the ii chord in E major. Slow it down and check the notes…
Absolutely beautiful! Made me miss Jerry so much. Excellent job
@@chrisk3 thanks!!!
Wow. Missed a few vids. Glad to see you. Gonna have to dust of those rusty strings just one more time
@@hoppy0720 nice!
I'm so happy you're back. I love having these lessons to watch and play with when i get up. I appreciate you a lot for doing these. Also...How many people heard and gave the go ahead on that "street cats" line? Haha...Producer: "Okay... it's ridiculous and it's too long, I love it, roll tape." It kinda messes up the whole song. Anyways thanks a lot.
tutorial please?
@@quitypop I’m sorry…I was just just goofing around with this one. I guess I can offer up something in my next office hours.
@@jacksnax4guitar460 much appreciated 🤙 also just quickly to get me started what's the chords to the song? G7 F C7 G7?
@@quitypop well not in that order It’s a blues with the F C chord change subbed in for the V (D)
Hey, I heard ya say you’re in Bethany beach at the end there & was wondering if ya wanna try an jam sometime & I might be interested in learning some scale idea’s from ya too. I been playing for 30 years now but never took a lesson, learned theory or learned all those scales. I more or less will usually get chords to a song & kinda play it my own way & as far as leads go, I learned a blues scale watch a “learn to play guitar overnight” VHS vid for 5 min once. Then one night sleeping out for Pink Floyd tix in ‘94, someone taught me on the B & the high E some scales with minor’s/half step patterns (just on those 2 stings) & the rest I took on my own from there. I mostly play in the same kinda pattern area on different parts of the neck to get a blues or country sound depending on the song. I’d like to learn a lot more & have some original’s if ya wanna hear “Ride or Die” & “Read between the Lies” on my channel. Those vids are the first time ever playing the songs at 4am, after I just finished writing them that night. Not sure how to message ya my number but lemme know if ya wanna try to get together one of these days. My mom lives at Bethany. I’m in California but moving back any day now. ✌️🤡☝🏼❤️
