Mike Phelps Wildlife Photography
Добавлен 22 май 2012
Hi my name is Mike Phelps I am a professional wildlife photographer based in the UK. I’ve been passionate about wildlife for as long as I can remember, as a young child I was taken to Symonds Yat to see the peregrine falcons nest, one landed so close to me and that was it I was hooked! Unfortunately a number of years ago I was hit quite hard with some mental health problems developed from a traumatic event that took place some 27 years previous, being signed off work for a couple of months whilst I received counselling my wife explained that I should try and clear my head by getting out into nature, take a camera I had previous brought for her and use it as a form of therapy. I listened to her and did just that…that was the start of the most amazing journey into Wildlife Photography. I now travel around the world with Apex Adventures photographing incredible wildlife in some beautiful countries including the UK. Come along and enjoy my journey in the natural world 💚
A day with the Kingfishers
Join me as I spend an incredible day photographing kingfishers at the stunning Staffordshire Wildlife Hides! Armed with my Sony A1 camera, a Sony 400mm f/2.8 lens, and a Sony 70-200mm GM lens, I capture some truly beautiful moments of these amazing birds in their natural habitat.
This adventure is made even more special as I’m joined by an 11-year-old aspiring wildlife photographer, Leon, and his dad, Luke. Watching Leon’s excitement and curiosity reminded me just how important it is to encourage children to connect with nature and explore the wonders of wildlife photography.

Absolutely love these, they are a bit different to the ones I have floating around my home. here's some that I've taken of my local (Australia QLD Tropics) King Fishers: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xdk3uiz0IK2VnrV3V5JaAyiXMMjKWIDF?usp=drive_link
Hi mate! I always wondered how do people get kingfishers really close to water. Based on my knowledge, they like to be 2-3m high. Do you mind sharing how did you manage to get him that low? And of course, amazing video! :)
@@bartha.albert Thank you 🙏🏻 this particular female will happily land on any perch you put in the pond she will sit on a low perch quite happily then jump up hover and dive for the fish. From my experience kingfishers are very curious when it comes to perches so in the past when I have put a new perch or post out on the river I have seen them fly past then do a complete 180 to land on and check out the new perch. As a rule the natural perches range from anything as low as a couple of inches to 5 meters but ideally they like to be about a meter which gives them a perfect view and less distance to travel to hit the fish below. I guess if it’s the only perch around they will choose any perch.
@ Thank you really much mate! I live right next to a small river which makes my job easier, but sadly the kingfishers here arent that curious. Also, can we be friends? You seem like a great guy :)
Its great to see people sharing their way of shooting, so other people can learn from it! Great video and keep it going mate 🔥
Absolutely awesome video and photography cheers for this Mike 👌
@@davidwebb3076 thank you so much 🙏🏻
Keep at it Mike. Great images. You come across really good.

What was the Buzzard feeding on?
A quail, I talk about this a bit in my next video that’s coming out this weekend 👍🏻
It's a 5 stars hide :) :) Nice shots !
It certainly is 👍🏻 thank you 🙏🏻
Hi Mike congratulations from Portugal. This is the best kingfisher video ever!!😀
Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You’ve earned a new subscriber my friend! Fellow wildlife photographer from across the pond. Excellent content, please keep producing videos. ~Lou
Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Super video, great to see the buzzard in the snow. Patience pays off!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Mükemmel,

Sencillamente mágico !!
@@yo4695 thank you 🙏🏻
Great video, the young lad looked like he had a ball. Nothing beats finding them in the wild though.
Thank you 🙏🏻 these are in the wild and have been using this lake for a while, but I know what you mean thing is that’s fine when your on your own and can conceal yourself away on the side of the river (something I have done so many times) but hard to achieve these types of shots when there is 3 of you. Main thing for me is getting a young lad interested and being able to give him photography advice while he was taking the photos which you couldn’t do elsewhere. 👍🏻
Hey there ☺️ I always love to see your work on instagram and now I saw you also have a youtube channel. I'm glad I found it 😁
@@lionelkrueger009 thank you 🙏🏻
Great video and so good to see Leon also enjoyed it.
@@seandavis6458 thank you and yes was a pleasure watching his smile and hearing his enthusiasm throughout the day
That kingfisher footage is outstanding pal! Both subject and background look awesome. Just subbed. Recently moved to the outer hebrides, I should see whether we get kingfishers up here and known locations
Thank you 🙏🏻 wow I love it up there ☺️
love this adventure and your video clips here are so stunning. i live in Jeddah on the red sea, kingfishers here are Autumn and winter visitors, this year i was lucky to spot one back in 15 th of August in an area close to my house, i go there as much as possible before i go to work, sometimes its just 4 meters away form me, but now these days sun do not rise before 7 am so photos are not that wow, although i use Olympus and can go as low as 1/60 in shutter speed, but then how many perched shots one wants, i really want some action. but then who cares i am enjoying watching them so much.
@@ammadoux that’s fantastic and your right sometimes just watching them is enough ☺️
My congratulations, I know by myself that to capture snow leopards in the wild isn’t easy task. I did it several times in Himalayas .
@@irbis8801 thank you 🙏🏻 yeah as you know it’s really hard work but so rewarding ☺️
Pretty Awesome images Mike! Keep them coming!❤

@@adamjuckesphoto ☺️ thanks pal it’s always nice to see that smile on a young kids face when they have encounters like this. Also the importance of places like this as we discussed with David Plummer on our podcast 💙
Cracking video mate, looks like Leon had an incredible time also 👍🏻

I wish you all the best with your RUclips channel and lots of views! You’re truly doing an amazing job. I’ve been following your photos on Instagram, and every time I see them, I say to myself, Wow, a true photographer through and through .GoldWildShot :)
@@bacardisopot thank you so much that’s really kind of you and I really appreciate the support 🙏🏻
I'd love to be in that hide. Those clips of the Kingfisher are just beautiful. The colours are amazing. We live in Western Australia and rarely get gloomy days like you do. It is mostly clear skies and sunlight. I find that the colours tend to be fairly muted on rainy days so it is interesting how you get such vibrant colours on days like that👍
@@wildhomevideos yes it’s a stunning hide! Although it was cloudy it was still bright but as you may know the kingfishers colours really do come out in the sunshine as the way the feathers are formed it is the reflection of light that gives them the vibrant colours. 🙏🏻
Brilliant vlog, thanks for the journey.
Excellent video, love the perches you used some of the best kingfisher shots on you tube. I will keep watching.
@@AndrewStewart-j8k thank you so much 🙏🏻 I’m glad you enjoyed it ☺️

Hi, now I know why we photographers grow beards so much, we spend too many hours waiting for something to land on the perch. Congratulations beautiful photos. 👍

Absolutely brilliant, you sure you are new to the other end of the lens? Like the other commentators have said, you are a natural, look forward to your next one, top marks!
Thank you 🙏🏻 new to RUclips but not new to talking to the camera ☺️
Really enjoyed the vid Mike, very envious as we rarely get snow in the southeast. It looks like you have oneway "glass" in the hide, is that right and where can I find it. Have now subscribed and good luck with the channel.
@@vanessaprice-adams5001 thank you 🙏🏻 it’s just a cheap Perspex from a diy store then got a one way film that I put on it myself. It drops the light down by about a stop but you have a really clear view out. Then just cut some holes for the lenses to go through. 👍🏻
Class! I follow you on all socials nice to see you have a channel now!
@@leeoliver1589 thank you pal it’s been a long time coming but really enjoying putting them together ☺️
