Hi! I'm Doopu. I try and make entertaining videos about niche subjects. I hope you enjoy 'em!
References in ZeroRanger
In this video, I go over a non-exhaustive list of shmup and mecha references in ZeroRanger. I've certainly missed a bunch, and maybe even misunderstood a couple - let me know what errata you find, and any other references you spotted!

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioning this, as it was my first "oh, references!" moment when playing the game: When you're sent to the past, to restart the game (I think this happens after the boss rush + monk fight) you see several circles or "portals" briefly appear on screen, during your time travel. These circles show different graphics that are backgrounds from classic shmups. This is only from the top of my head, so maybe this info is not 100% accurate, but these are the games graphics I remember seeing: -Galaga (multi colored stars BG) -Xevious (Nazca lines style figure) -1942 / 1943 (aircraft carrier) -Star Force (Square metal tiles on asteroids and stars BG) -Gradius (Moai statues) -Slap Fight (Or Truxton/Tatsujin... could be either) - (X-shaped metal grid on top of a rocky terrain) And then there's 2 that I don't think I recognize, not from a quick glance at least. Maybe someone can help identifying those!
At 10:35 you put in Komm Susser Todd but if you listen to the actual music of the intro leading up to the fire raining down on the city it's very clearly the same as the first few seconds of the Gurren Lagann song called Libera Me From Hell.
the zeroranger opening is literally just an altered version of great mahou daisakusen (dimahoo)'s opening
In gunstar heroes, the two player characters are siblings, while a third sibling has been brainwashed to work for the antagonists. Perhaps I'm reaching but it was the first thing that came to mind when I understood the sister's relationship. It also has the "boss warning" text(maybe the first game to have the text?).
In the talking screen room there is a clear Treasure logo at the top
You missed a Gurren Lagan reference. The loop 2 Grapefruit theme “Sky xxxx Days” is a reference to the opening theme.
There's like 3 back to back Gainax references in the first Grapefruit encounter. He fails to mention that it straight up has an AT Field too.
Very late, but just wanted to add that Rybb's long orange hair pretty closely resembles the same kind of glorious mop on Genesic Gaogaigar, a super robot which features in the OVA series Gaogaigar Final. I also think that the pre-boss text in regular stages outside the dream sequence closely resemble those in Radiant Silvergun as well.
2:58 I was thinking it's a reference to Escatos' bonus witch things, considering how charge shot works simular-esh to shield from that game ruclips.net/video/jFf5DnAghZ0/видео.htmlfeature=shared&t=372
Artypo also fights a lot like the third boss from radiant silvergun.
Love the videos but please don't speak words in foreign languages. It just doesn't work for you man.
If you're somehow unable to just put the word in Google Translate and click the megaphone to know how it's pronounced then what the fuck are you doing... Almost no content creator on this site even bothers trying to pronounce other languages right
Excellent video, really enjoyed this, thanks!
The witch is probably a reference to the WonderWitch, a combination mascot for Qute and the name of a dev kit made by Qute for the Wonderswan Color. Qute are the developers of Judgement Silversword and Eschatos (in fact, WonderWitches make recurring appearances in Eschatos.) The fact that the achievement for finding the witch is the name of Eschatos' ending theme makes this almost certain Also, right there above Erasure at 11:05 is the Treasure logo.
The serpent in stage 3 has the exact same surfacing animation as the serpent boss in Rondo of Blood
the whole game is actually jeremiah gottwald reference
You're the developer brah aint no way you spotted this
9:34 That also can be a reference to the Getter-2, the second form that the Getter pilots can use on the Getter Robo franchise by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa, work that also was a heavy inspiration for Gurren Laggan Nice video btw, I loved how you catched some elements from this excellent game
Both your channel and this game are so painfully underrated I swear
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE ANALYSIS FOR BUDDHISM IN ZERO RANGER DOOPU??? IT'S BEEN THREE YEARS I NEED IT NOW!!!!
Not just them, literally nobody has done an in-depth analysis of all of the buddhist elements
The dream stage boss announcement pulls a card from Ikaruga's boss announcement. "A huge enemy approaching fast. According to the data, it is identified as King Onion." Both Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun are developed by Treasure, of which the game pulls other aspects from the latter.
Something else I noticed is I think Erasure's dialogue before the final sequence references Gradius V. First of all, there's the ship's computer sending you back in time at the end of both games. The future Vic Viper says "I don't have much time so listen closely", and the computer says "that is a highly dangerous operation", both very similar to Erasure's lines.
I think you missed out the striking resemblance of Rybb’s transformation with magical girls. Also, the homing laser is inspired by Rayforce (Decker) and Radiant Silvergun (Rybb).
The first boss, the big bomber ship is actually a ref to the first boss from Guxt. Big Zan is a reference to the fake final boss of Cho Ren Sha (this is more evident in earlier versions of ZeroRanger back when it was call "FinalBoss"), in fact its little minions are the player ship from that game, the secret ships that drop bonuses are the final boss ship and the big tankier ships that show up in stage 3 are the red ships that drop items in Cho Ren Sha... there's a lot of Cho Ren Sha in this game is what I'm getting at. Finally, the Onion Giant from the second stage of the 2nd loop is pretty clearly a reference to the God Warrior from Nausicaa. The boss parade is full of references.
I like how Arc Adder straight up screams "FUCK !" at 1:41
I dont know if it's a reference, but on the second fight against Grapefuit, he uses an attack that is exactly the same as Merco from Mischief Makers (a beam that looks like a dragon/snake). Here's Merco attack: ruclips.net/video/ak_0ubJ5-2Q/видео.html Grapefruit: ruclips.net/video/DaoMOdp_pP0/видео.html
11:14 ok are we just going to ignore the treasure logo chilling in the background?
That witch is an Eschatos reference. It's the Wonder Witch! The cheevo for collecting it, "Clair De Lune", shares its name with a classical music piece as well as the pre-credits of Eschatos.
Will you make a video about the Buddhism in Zeroranger? I really want to know more about it
bro its been 2 years wya
While the origin of the references traces back to dodonpachi, I think the dream sequence is at least partially referencing crimson clover as well. crimson clover also has the same pattern of tanks moving down at an angle, and the fire pattern of your ship is almost identical between the dream sequence and crimson clover.
I thought this too when I encountered it, but I'm also not a massively prolific shmup player, so I wasn't sure if there might be deeper roots Crimson Clover took inspiration from that were, similarly closer than the Dodonpachi comparison. 🤔
Why wouldn't the laser be from big zan? If you take too long to kill him, he uses that same laser to kill you.
Shoutout to Eboshidori's channel: He's one of the dudes who made this divine acid trip.
You missed the extra enemies and skull enemies which are based off of enemies from kingdom grand prix and dimahoo
I think the optional monk boss fight is a reference to Undertale in general (how you can avoid it altogether) and to Sans in particular (see the rollercoaster-esque shape and of one attack and the big lazerbeams.
Especially considering how after defeating the true final boss, it's replaced by a skeleton who tries to tell you a pun
I hope the Buddhism reference project isn't shelved!
a year later ,we are still waiting for his follow up video
I'm feeling (rightly) called out lol - the follow-up is about 70% edited, one day soon I hope to finish it up and finally upload it!
@@doopu If you need any help, please tell me! I'd like to see it finished
Thats no Marisa, but rather Eshchatos 'wonderwitch' bonus. There are few references to Touhou still.
There are also a couple of Hellsinker. references thrown about. I didn't know if they were really true or unintentional at first, but after seeing System Erasure's tweet about Hellsinker being on sale, I was sure it was completely intentional. 2-1 boss's final phase references Scarlet Queen's Soul Volatiling secret phase from Hellsinker. The bobbing movement and the missile spam attack are the telltale signs. For both charge shots, if you hold down the button for an entire minute, you shoot an extra-powerful shot. This references the character DEADLIAR's 60 second blade attack, where holding main-shot for 60 seconds causes an extremely powerful barrage of blade slashes. There are 4 main menu themes, just like in Hellsinker, that are unlocked as you progress through the game. Not entirely sure if this one is intentional. Bit of a stretch, but the end of first loop boss rush could be a reference to Perpetual Calendar, the Segment 5 boss in Hellsinker. (i.e. a central machine throwing 4 other bosses at you) There are 8 stages in total..? Does that count? Plus a hidden final phase? Really pushing it, but I don't know any other 8 stage shmups...
Good spots - I've been trying to get into Hellsinker but it's such a timesink (heh). I think a few of the things you've mentioned are definitely related to that game. The charge shots are an interesting one, because since at least R-Type Final back in 2003 there's been a charge beam you had to hold for 45 (!) seconds... But the extra fifteen seconds makes it more Hellsinker-y for sure. Maybe a reference-in-a-reference..? I suspect the eight stages are more to do with the Buddhist noble eightfold path, which I'm (finally) hoping to talk about soon..! Thanks for the comment!
@@doopu Right, the eightfold path! Interestingly, I believe Buddhism is also a prevalent theme in Hellsinker as well, super interesting and I totally forgot about it! Also, with the charge shot - it's probably that kind of nested reference in shmups - very clever if they really made a double-homage that way. What a great game, I regret not playing it seriously earlier, but I've been having a lot of fun routing out score routes and such - the level design is a very underrated aspect of the game too. Just so good on all fronts
Pretty sure the intro at 10:38 is a reference to Dimahoo: ruclips.net/video/wM1CEDJgGlo/видео.html
I think the witch is from cotton
I dont know why you have a small porcentage of subs, its such a great vd :/
also 2-3's boss battle when using the drill ends on a drill clash like gurren lagann, which is....really cool
the opening sequence reminds me of nono's final form from diebuster
idk if anyone's mentioned this but the scrolling background in the final boss seems to reference Marx's boss background in Kirby Super Star, the final boss's death is also really similar to Nighmare's death in Nightmare in Dreamland, the orbs that appear alot in the game also look a bit like Nightmare's orbs
Really liked this video! Looking forward to the Buddhism one!
you still waiting?
@@Blueflag04 lol I guess so!
the game intro probably references this ruclips.net/video/ghWrDh8vDvA/видео.html
9:40 You forgot one of the biggest Gurren references when you fight Grapefuit with the drill: The drill clash. It is almost verbatim the climax of the Spiral King fight. Basically, just use your drill when Grapefruit does, and try not to panic.
During the transition sequence between stage 1-4 and 2-1, one of the bubbles contains a level from Star Force (NES). I'm sure the other bubbles are references too but I didn't recognize any.
I was really glad to see someone made a video like this, there are a lot of references I missed, but I am surprised you missed the Sans fight in the boss rush in 1-4. If you beat the true ending, he is even a skeleton.
I just wanna add that the enemy in stage 1-4 that gives the last SE bonus dies in a similar way to Marx and Galacta Knight in Kirby Super Star (and Kirby Super Star Ultra) the way he bounces all around the place and then explodes.
YO TRUE, it's bizzare how little people tall about that reference.
Thanks everyone for your comments so far! So many obvious things missed, and clearly I've got a lot of shmups to play... It's yet another sign of System Erasure's love of the genre that so many people can come together to identify all the references hidden away in this gem. And some of the not-so-hidden... I really should get around to Radiant Silvergun...
This is old, but meh, it bears repeating: The game is heavily inspired by Radiant Silvergun - large portions of its plot were inspired from that game, and anyone who played Silvergun will recognize the style of the Boss intro text. There's a segment loosely based off the "high speed" sections that appear in every Gradius game. The Space Invaders/Missile Command Boss. THE UNDERTALE BOSS HOW DO YOU MISS THE UNDERTALE BOSS COME ON! The final boss not only has a Touhou-esque theme, but the hand projectiles are referencing Esp Ra De. The really real end credits show what appear to be parodies of box art. I only recognize one: One that is parodying Ketsui, another Bullet Hell by Cave.
Not to mention they basically one for one copied the gallop from radiant silvergun
@@IPODsify which is an R-Type & Armed Police Unit Gallop reference even in the radiant silvergun
Which one is Undertale boss?
@@Blackcloud288 monk guy during the simulation boss rush, you also can beat him the "pacifist" way or just time out when he sleeps. his attack patterns might also remind you of the doo da da tu guy
@@PenolAkusharialso in the post-game he's replaced by a skeleton that tells jokes.
