Good observation. When playing my light German bow with an unusually small frog, using tight hair is the only way to play loudly without the string touching the stick. This noise would be unforgivable in auditions nowadays. Cheers

Auditions are played in Austria and Germany mostly in solo tuning, four strings. When playing gigs there is often a five string instrument in the orchestra pit waiting for you.

Very interesting, i asked because it seems a bunch of folks graduating from Curtis Institute in America seem to be using solo tuning-except-the-bottom string… although they all use french bow, so they’d be ineligible in Germany anyhow

@@max.domante Es un cb del 2014, Michael Glass nr 30 de la Rubner, está descontinuado, lo compré en 2020 practicamente sin uso, tenía montadas unas spiro...he probado con passione, deluxe, evah y belcanto. Con éstas va mejor. Sin embargo aún no es un sonido cálido. Mi cb es 7/8 dorso plano, lo llaman modelo italiano, muy bonito, muy cómodo y excelente construcción. Gracias

Parece buena idea quedarse con las belcanto, éstas ayudan a moderar los contrabajos que tienden a sonar demasiado brillantes o metálicos, eso sí existe un precio a pagar y es que las cuerdas son notablemente más gruesas que flexocore y otras de pirastro, haciendo difícil vibrar y tocar rápido. Otro factor que contribuye positivamente en tu caso sería un puente sin anillos, si fuera el caso. Si las curdas están un poco duras puedes buscar reducir la tensión acercando el tiracuerdas al puente o mejor aún, aumentando la altura del tiracuerdas. Dado que por medio de comentarios no puedo compartir enlaces te pido googlear "Moser - height adjustable saddle" y verás fotos de un invento para modificar la altura del tiracuerdas, esto viéndolo un luthier te puede hacer algo parecido en Chile. Ahora no puedo asegurar que vaya a reducir el sonido metálico, solo digo que ayudaría a compensar lo tensas que son las belcanto, ofreciendo así las cuerdas menos brillantes-metálicas que he probado. Original flat-chrome serían la peor opción creo, brillan mucho. Saludos

Check out muvac, the audition website; many orchestras in Central Europe, specifically Austria, Germany, and German-speaking Switzerland, mention something along the lines of 'Das Probespiel wird in Solostimmung gespielt. Voraussetzung ist der Gebrauch einer deutschen Bogenhaltung.' In essence, they mandate the use of a German bow and solo tuning. The precise reason for this last requirement remains unclear to me. I've noticed that people playing with orchestral tuning might face a disadvantage due to slightly thicker strings. However, the key factor, in my opinion, is that playing gigs in Germany differs from other parts of the world. In virtually every theater here, you can rely on a good Pöllman waiting for you, therefore there is no need to transport your own audition/solo instrument. If asked, I would advocate for diversification and acceptance of both tunings and the use of a French bow. However, most orchestras in these regions prioritise a stable, uniform, and homogeneous group where everyone plays in a similar manner. On the other hand, if you visit the current vacancies at the Royal Opera House in London you can find the following: "Orchestral tuning is required, not solo tuning" "The post holder must own their own instrument and bow" Cheers and thanks for tuning in.
