Good video, though the Z on the end of words was pronounced as an R AnsuZ = AnsuR = Answer KenaZ = KenaR = Kenner <- in Dutch this means knower HalagaZ = HagalaR = hagelaar <- in Dutch this would mean "hailer". The words/names of the runes have still survived within the Germanic languages. This R was pronounced differently than we know them in most languages today. If my theory is correct, it should be close to the R sound as they pronounce it in eastern Norwegian which is much like the Chinese pronounce the R. A rolling R, but more in front of the mouth. This Z(R) sound later on blended together with the Rolling R that we know today. Also don't forget that different regions had different dialects. There was no one standardized way of pronouncing things like the whole Woðan/Oðin or Donar/Þunar/Þór dialect continuüm.

z > R after the PGmc period. The runic corpus shows this. It is also explained this way in in chapters concerning phonology by actual linguists (e.g., Elmer Antonsen). You can also see in the Gothic data that z > s, which is typical of final devoicing. The whole R thing when writing, e.g., ansuR, etc. is political. Take a look at my video on Germanic vs. Scandinavian. Thanks for the comment!

If I recall correctly, Old East Frankish or Franconian and South Rhine Frankish both had preserved the "th" sound in words like "thaz" and "ther" and "thio" and their inflected forms, as did Old Saxon, Old Low Frankish and Old English (and Middle and Modern English), whereas in Old Alemannic, Old Bavarian, Middle High German, Modern High German, Middle Dutch, Modern Dutch, Middle Low German and Modern Low German the "th" shifted to "d." South Rhine Frankish (the language of the Strasbourg/Strassburg Oaths) participated in many of the shifts (ih, got but godes, zi, for example) whereas the Frankish of Trier was not as shifted, as likewise the modern "Rhenish fan" dialects (they say ich or isch rather than ick, but dat, Old Trier Frankish that, wat, et, füüfzisch).

We are not vikings and as long as someone knows what we are trying to say that’s all that should matter. Isn’t that the whole point of language anyways? It’s like arguing over how to say Tomato: Toe-MAY-toe vs Toe-MAH-toe. Or what about Aluminum; American vs. British pronunciation? Maybe we shouldn’t shame people for having an accent. There are lots of sounds people struggle with in various cultures, you know that. Let’s stop getting angry over semantics.

I had my own experience as an oathbreaker. When i was a kid, i was at a baseball game in town, and i was so hungry but had no money. I promised to help clean up after the game for some food. Well, i had my food, and then i left and went home. Well i lived in a small town so they knew who i was and where i lived so the concession owner showed at my house, told my mom what happened and was told to go with her and help like i promised. Even though i did do it. The loss of trust as a consequence of my actions still sits with me all these years later. And i learned that a man is only as good as his word is trusted.
