Dubai Diary: From Tourists to Residents
Добавлен 6 мар 2022
Welcome to Dubai Diary, the cosy corner of the internet where our family shares the rollercoaster ride of holidaying and living in Dubai.
Our love affair with Dubai began with a family holiday back in 2021, and since then, we’ve worked out it's where we want to be. Returning five times for more sun, fun, and a hint of business. These journeys have given us some of our most memorable experiences as a family, from belly laughs over camel rides gone awry to navigating the maze of relocation paperwork.
Here, you'll find everything from the essentials of travelling to Dubai, to the nitty-gritty of making it your new home. We cover the gamut - things you absolutely need to know before you pack your bags, the best family-friendly activities (and those perfect couple escapes), and all the critical details about visas, healthcare, and schooling for those contemplating a move.

thank u so much for sharing , very informative . and thanks for the background , i can see Sobha creek vistas tower B building process , thats where i bought an apartment . i think the way to look at driving in dubai depends on where you come from ... in my case dubai is Heaven in driving 😂 thanks A lot
Lexus broke?
Thank you so much for sharing all those insights in your videos, they’re super helpful !!
Thanks so much for this - very helpful! The 4 quarterly cheques which are post dated, are they typically dated at beginning of quarter? Example: Renting from Jan'25 to Dec'25, so cheques have dates of 1st Jan'25, 1st April'25, 1st July'25 so on or mid of quarter is also an option? Also, what's the typical lock in period? If failed to meet, security deposit is what you forego right?
Hi love the video’s been watching them all. I just want to give a little advise on the malls in Abu Dhabi the best two in my opinion are Yas Mall and World Trade Center Mall. Been to Abu Dhabi a lot even lived in Abu Dhabi for a few months .
Hatta, Hollywood sign there’s Braşov sign also. Keep it up 👍🏻
Just wondering how much do you need a month in income to live a decent lifestyle for a family of four. I know it depends but generally ?
You should put costs of living here as a family. Most people are most concerned about that. Prob a separate video on that would be good
Have you done the breakfast at Royal Atlantis? You don’t have to be a resident and it’s incredible. Loving the videos.
Very informative please keep up the good work. Dubai is definitely what you make it. Can be flashy or lead a more normal life. We’ve enjoyed our time at Sobha Hartland but now moving further inland to a villa. More bang for your buck.
Hi, nice to see another video from you. Can you please make a video about health insurance? Specially for people who don't have an UAE employer and want to work remotely.
Hi Buddy. Im flying out to Dubai on the 26th to celebrate my sons birthday. Im also a follower of yours recently. I would love to grab a coffee and discuss your move over as I too am working on do this so your insights are valuable to me and would really appreciate your time. Im coming from the UK.
Thanks Im moving to dubai in 3 months and this is very helpful
One of the most popular reasons people from the UK move to Dubai is for the tax benefits which you did not discuss at all. After six months of being in Dubai are you both now non UK residents for tax purposes and could you explain what that looks like?
Thank you for sharing. We moved almost 5 months ago. Best thing we did.
Good video but I think the following would have been better to explain: - did you sell up in the UK and buy a place in Dubai? Are you renting? - how did you move into the place where you’re living in Dubai? - what type of work do you do and what are the job opportunities out there for anyone wanting to relocate with family? - what are your rough monthly expenses running a family, paying for gas/elec etc over there? - have you signed up to any health care? Many have been to Dubai to visit on holiday but those wanting to move from the UK to Dubai or Abu Dhabi, what are the initial steps you took?
What camera do you use? It’s amazing! Can’t wait to watch later tonight
Your videos have been so informative! Thanks for sharing, we’re making the move out there later this year. Can you guys recommended a good visa company to help process visas? It feels like a bit of a minefield!! I’ve heard such mixed things about some companies xx
Thanks for the comment and congrats on you making the move out here later in the year! We went with Meydan Free Zone. Advice: Get them to share all the docs you require so you have a checklist & if you need to get docs attested do this in the UK before you move 👌🏼
@@ourdubaidiary Thanks so much, really appreciate the advice x
Best app for driving in Dubai and UAE is Waze, it tells you where speed cameras are, roadworks, traffic jams, and which lanes to move into for exits etc 🙂
Recently relocated to Dubai in December, Coffee sounds great 👍🏻
Don't be gay, or do gay things.
My husband and I moved here 20 years ago with a 5 and 8 year old. They grew up here and we don't regret a thing. We had never lived overseas before this move and were very naive. Financially watch your money not only with spending but also especially if Investment companies try to badger you into investing with them. There are many sharks over here who prey on new expats. We got bitten badly and speak from experience! Generally though life has been amazing over here. Children are much safer here than the UK. They do lose friend groups more easily here though as everyone leaves eventually and that can be hard for your kids. Again speak from experience. I wish I hadn't sold our property in the UK and had rented it out. That was a mistake. We didnt buy here as the build quality is so bad and most property is not Freehold, therefore, the land is never your own. Schools are expensive and vary massively in how good they are. We got education and rent as part of our employment package 20 years ago and still get rent to this day and you need that as part of your employment package although that's rarer these days. Rent prices are crazy. The first year living here is very costly. People have no idea when they come on holiday and then want to live here how much their wallet will take a hit to set up everything.
Hi guys hope u good, can you pls tell me how much money I Need per calendar month for family of four to live like yourselves🎉TNX
Hey - there’s a load of things in that to consider (school, healthcare, location etc). Do you mean in terms of living costs (rent , bills etc)?
@ourdubaidiary yes I mean total expenditure per month, food, utility, housing, school and socialising plus travel
Hi guys, Should have seen our excitement this evening when we saw your video show up on our RUclips… again. We did miss the content. We currently live in Melbourne Australia and are coming to Dubai later this year. Plan for now is to stay for 6 months. We find ourselves relating so much to your content!!! Keep up the great work guys!!
That’s so cool to read 🤩 Please make sure to reach out when you head over (or before if we can help with anything).
I'm relocating to Dubai this September with my wife and two year old. Your channel has been super helpful with solid advice. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Hey Bruce - thanks so much for taking g the time to write this. Fires us up to do more 🔥 😊 Please reach out directly if we can help with anything and we should grab a coffee when you arrive ☕️
Thanks for the info, but can you comment on what’s it like living in an Islamic country?
Hey- Adam here as don’t want to speak for me and Sara on the topic under one summary incase she has different views. Thanks for asking! Honestly, I don’t wake up every day thinking about being in a different culture-it just feels like life as usual. Of course, there are moments that remind me of the unique traditions and values here, but nothing has fundamentally changed how I live my life. What I’ve found is that people here are incredibly friendly and respectful. Dubai, in particular, feels like a melting pot of cultures where everyone respects the local laws and traditions.
I've lived in Dubai since October. Have visited many muslim countries. Tbh, depending on where you live in Dubai, it feels more like Miami than a Muslim city.
Excellent, informative video. Please keep it up
Thanks so much Janine
👍
Love it!
Im not a racist, but why are white people from the UK and Western countries wanting to move to muslim majority countries in the Middle East when you dont like Muslims? i dont get it. Please do reply
Hi there, thanks for your comment! I think there’s been a bit of a misunderstanding here. The statement “you don’t like Muslims” is a huge generalisation and one I strongly disagree with. People’s motivations for moving to different countries are often complex and personal-this video covers ours in case you haven’t watched it yet. I think it’s important to avoid assuming everyone from one group shares the same views-whether that’s about religion, culture, or anything else.
Great to see you back! Just settling in to watch!! 🫶
Thanks Steve - hope you’re well
cheers team! Doing well! The dream for me would be to move the family of 3 over and has been for the last 2 years and for all the things you said off the bat! But my hold me back is a good employment package and home set up here and as I wouldn’t have a uk based online business or a current employer who would enable me to be based in Dubai, I would be relying on the local employment market as ‘cards in’ aka staff employee. And what I have read in the groups you were members of, it basically doesn’t paint a good stable employment environment and as so many people want to live there and willing to take lesser packages makes it so risky! Well that was my brain dump! Thanks for be a sounding board 🤣
What are the services charges like for your building. Happy 6 months!! 🎉
Thanks Rebecca 🙏 Great q - ours are built into the rent but I can try and find out and follow up. It works on AED/square foot so the bigger the apartment the higher the service charge (important if you’re buying - but think all rentals included)
I love your videos, but please do more of them 😊🙏🏼
Thanks so much 🙏 anything specific you’re enjoy or want to see?
@ i love watching family trips which I hope to see more of (like hatta, nba abu dhabi), and I strongly suggest RAK since the boys like hiking, i have 2 boys too and would love to see your family test drive RAK for us 🤣, cheers and thank you for your wonderful videos mate 👍🏼🙏🏼
I am visiting Hartland international school and Sobha Hartlands when we visit next month based on your videos so thanks for all the great info you have provided. I am a little worried about the school fees though as I worked out fees at that school would be around 39k gbp for my three children!! What am I missing? 🙈 xxx
Hey Rebecca - great to hear your visiting (grab a coffee in Sobha with us if you’re free and we can help with anything else). Could be the age of the kids , or have you factored in the discount you get with sending multiple kids ? Feel free to drop us a DM on TikTok if you wanted to chat
@@ourdubaidiary thanks for your reply. This would be lovely. Will be sure to give you a shout when we are in the area. There are so many questions 🤣 your vlogs are so helpful! We are moving from Liverpool next summer. I have three boys. Currently in year 8, year 3 and year 1. Yes I worked out 5% discount for 2nd child and 10% discount for 3rd child. Does your calculations include the likes of school dinners? Hartlands international seems to tick all boxes from research I have done but got other schools on list to visit such as The Arbor School, (we are on RGS wait list but been told they might not have places for 25/26). It so hard trying to research remotely. Can’t wait to just get out there and get the ball moving. So many nice areas to live but I am prioritising living close to school as the stories of traffic and commutes to school scares me 🤣. So nice to hear you have all settled so well. Just one more question… do the boys play out / hang out with friends? This is a must for us so thought a villa community would be best option but it seems like Sobha Hartlands community is great for this also ? Thanks again for your help x
Great, I'll be watching this with the Mrs later! Need all the tips and insight before our arrival in June!
Love it. Where about are you moving to?
Jvt, kids have been offered places at Sunmarke
Your traffic fines are likely to be for crossing the yellow lines at exits/entries to the highway… particularly on SZR.
You may have just saved us a fortune. Thanks so much
@@ourdubaidiary I hope so! (Also happy to meet for a coffee… I moved here from the UK in June last year)
Hi. I’ve commented on a previous video so forgive me for asking a similar question to my original one. We’re considering moving to Dubai in the future but cannot find anyone on RUclips talking about the “rules” of living in Dubai but keeping a home in the U.K. It’s been suggested that we give up U.K. residency (not citizenship) but then we can only stay/work in the U.K. for a number of days apparently, do you know of this rule? I’m also concerned that as we will no longer be residents we aren’t entitled to insurances on our home/car/life etc etc. again can you put my mind at rest with regards to this, the small print says very clearly that I need to reside in the U.K. to have these insurances. A few answers to these sorts of questions would really help. There’s probably a whole ex pat forum out there that actually answers everything I’m desperate to know about but I’m struggling to find it.
Hi, you need to speak to a tax advisor as there are various automatic residency tests and srt tests that may apply, each situation is unique. As you're planning a move to the UAE, it would make sense to get a 'clean exit' from the UK, and reap the benefits of the tax free income in the UAE. Familiarise yourself with the automatic residence tests but get advice, it's deliberately been designed as a minefield, especially if you complete self assessment tax returns. Wish you the best of luck with your expat journey!
we have been here 5 months and its gone so fast!
Thanks dude - look forward to seeing you soon
great advice! is Rileys arm ok?
Yeah man - he’s all good and thanks for checking in.
Hi mate we are in Dubai and landed just after Christmas. Your content has really helped us out. More than happy to meet up. Sorry about what happened.
Hey pal - welcome 😊 Love to hear the content has been handy. Are you on LinkedIn (Adam Callow) / Insta (adcallow) - seems best way to try and connect ? Re the deal falling through - disappointed , yes. But on reflection it’s definitely the right outcome all things considered . Onwards 🚀
@ amazing mate will add you now and send you a voice note
Not in Dubai but just to say that I find your vulnerability really brave and refreshing. There are so many lonely people that live in big cities and if they all made posts like this then the loneliness crisis would be solved. Respect to you ☺️
Thanks so much Lianne, really appreciate you taking the time to drop me this comment 🙏
I've attributed 1500 gbp per month for the grocery shop, 750gbp for eating out and 1000gbp for adhoc activities, what do u think? We're 2 adults and 3 kids from a food only perspective, do you think this is doable?
Hey - I thinks that’s absolutely doable (plenty) especially if you’re will to shop smart and find deals. Make sure to use all the apps and don’t blow your brains doing ‘big shops’ in local mini supermarkets (equivalent of a Tesco express). Head to the large hypermarkets
Definitely recommend going to visit the other Emirates Specially while the weather is good 😊
We’re exited to. Anywhere you recommend ?
@ourdubaidiary For nature and hikes, theres loads around Fujairah and RAK, wadi Abadilah and wadi Al Ghuna are beautiful and fairly easy to tackle. Fujairah has the 2nd biggest mosque in the UAE, some Forts- Fujairah fort, Sakamkam fort and Al Hayl Castle, to name a few. Sharjah - Khorfakkan is beautiful, Al suhub rest area, is a cafe perched on top of a mountain with stunning views, Sharjah aquarium is lovely, its not massive, but its a nice day out Khor Kalba mangroves and Kalba bird of prey centre are again, not big places but a lovely day out. Rafisha dam is another nice place for kayaking. You should also check out Al Madam off road history museum, in Sharjah, I reckon your lads would love it 🙂
@@ourdubaidiary Ras Al Khaimah , up to the Omani border and then Muscat in Oman is stunning
@@ourdubaidiarywell i did answer this, but have no idea where my comment has gone 😅
well done Alex, great decision , you are now free as a bird
Thank you for the vlogs. My favourite family to watch in Dubai. Relocating with my family soon. And if we see you we will definitely say hi and get an autograph and photos with our favourite Dubai family.
Aww thank you! Yes - please hey! 👋🏼 when do you move?
Great to see a new video! Thanks for sharing your experiences and insights about Dubai. I do have a few questions around schooling if that's ok? After six months, what's your view on the school? Would you say it’s equivalent to a good UK public school? I've heard extracurricular activities can be quite costly and school time ends quite early so wondering how do you guys arrange kid's time after school? Many thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Yes of course - boys have settled in so fast. It is 100% better than a public school in the UK more opportunities, more primary varied lessons than the UK. After school activities are called enrichment here in Hartland, some are free and last an hour and some are paid (these are optional). Time after school I work from home so this is fine for me. They have friends in our apartment building that they play with also which is nice. Hope this helps 😊
These mini vlogs are really good. But I am also missing your longer vlogs.
Longer vlog coming soon!
Loving these little vids! Thanks for sharing
Glad you’re enjoying them 😊 we have a full 6 month review video being edited now to

Thank you 😊
